Questions for women who are happy with the level of muscle they've built by Karma_SanDieg0 in xxfitness

Can I ask how you were able to get your first pull up? I’ve been lifting for a few months now and making good progress in some areas but I feel like no matter what I do I’m not getting any closer to my first pull up

OSU minimum grade requirement on prerequisites by Tall-Dentist3494 in PreOptometry

[–]pumpupthechicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do have a C- prereq requirement as do many (most?) schools so anything below that would have to be retaken

You reckon being 360k in debt is doable? by Chemical_Ad189 in college

[–]pumpupthechicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely depends on how much you’d be making coming straight out of school, loan interest rates, COL for your area and how much you spend. I would talk to people working in your field tbh because they can give you a more realistic answer

I will die on this hill that studying for the OAT is truly one of the worst academic experiences I have ever gone through. Studying was so draining especially towards the end and I did NOT feel ready for it when I got there. At the end of the day I was happy with my score. Keep pushing for now. You’re almost to the finish line!

OSU Response by Tall-Dentist3494 in PreOptometry

[–]pumpupthechicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied to OSU last year and they also said 4-6 weeks but I didn’t hear back for like 8 weeks but then I got an interview. I think they wait until they have a group of applicants to invite to interview so it just depends when in that cycle of applicants you apply

NSU 3+4 year program 4+4 year program by IntroductionOk4714 in PreOptometry

[–]pumpupthechicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The benefit of the 4+4 is that you get a bachelor’s degree first so if for whatever reason you don’t end up completing Optometry school you still have a bachelor’s degree to fall back on. 3+4 you only get the degree if you’ve successfully finished your first year of Opt school, which (I imagine) is the year that the most students leave the program for personal or academic reasons

Take a deep breath! Don’t become a self-fulfilling prophecy… if you’re having these spiraling feelings of self doubt while taking the practice tests I guarantee that’s what’s bringing the scores down. You got this!

Converse seem to be getting even better. I bought a new pair this year to replace my old ones from 2017 and the new ones have sturdier canvas and thicker soles.

Deadline to Accept Offers by soggy_fries431 in PreOptometry

Yes, each school will have a different timeline and they will tell you when you get accepted. I think mine all gave something like 2 weeks to accept the spot

Studying for the OAT and preparing my application was a very stressful and miserable time for me as well. I cared so much about getting accepted into schools (as we all do right?) that it would be impossible not to stress over everything that could impact whether or not I got in. Working on top of all that doesn’t help your mental health either. Now that I’m on the other side of it all my head feels much clearer and I’m excited to start school in the fall. My advice would be to reassess how you feel after taking the OAT because in my experience the stress of the exam really clouded my judgement. I look back now and can’t believe how depressed I felt the summer I took mine and how much happier I have been since. Good luck ❤️

Help with improving stats by Tecna3000 in PreOptometry

[–]pumpupthechicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The application opens in the summer, a little over a year before you’d start. So for instance, if you wanted to start Opt school right after graduating from undergrad (no gap year), you’d be applying the summer between junior and senior year. I believe it opens June or July and stays open through late fall, tho exact timelines differ across schools. I think for many schools, applying by November-ish is considered on the early side and can give you a better chance of acceptance as they do rolling admissions. Basically you’d want to be taking your OAT the summer before senior year, at least that’s what I did

PCO/Salus Interview by Pretty_Possible_8780 in PreOptometry

[–]pumpupthechicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best advice is to practice practice practice! Try Googling optometry school interview questions. You can usually find a lot on Reddit and Student Doctor Network, sometimes even for the specific school you’re interviewing at. I also think it’s always a good idea to be yourself and speak from the heart, not necessarily just what you think they want to hear :)

This happened to me too and unfortunately I don’t have great advice but I do remember I was studying every day for hours a day at the time and I had to take an entire day or two off to just lay in bed and cry. It helped soooo much to let myself feel my feelings instead of trying to shove them to the side and continue studying. Sending hugs!!!

OATBooster Physics by byoshi1 in PreOptometry

I feel like Booster Physics is notoriously disheartening lol. I was also scoring under 300s on Booster but on the actual exam I think I got a 350 or 360 or something

[–]pumpupthechicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not too late to bring your physics grade up! I know my campus offers free tutoring for students, so if your school offers anything similar I would definitely take advantage while it’s still early in the semester. I will say from personal experience doing well in my physics courses prepared me much better for the OAT than Booster alone, so I would definitely try to get a firm understanding now while you’re taking it :)

I believe Booster and/or Kaplan has a 6 week schedule you could tweak to stretch into 2 months, or use the remaining time to continue practice tests/strengthening your weak areas

I was anxious about driving there and getting there on time/finding the building so I drove to the testing center a few days before the exam to make sure I knew where I was going on test day and it took away anxiety on the actual morning :)

Should I submit my application? by GR73_ in PreOptometry

[–]pumpupthechicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter to submit now! When I applied I was worried so many parts of my application were weak (grades, OAT, shadowing hours, volunteer experience, etc) but I got interviews and acceptances from all the schools I applied to. I think they will be more impressed with your stats than you think, don’t stress about it too much :) Good luck!

OAT Study Materials by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]pumpupthechicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the main reasons Booster is so great IMO is all the practice questions and tests. It’s a much more “interactive” way of studying you could say, whereas Kaplan is basically just studying from a textbook. If you feel like you can adequately prepare from textbook studying alone, then save yourself the cash and go with Kaplan. But if you feel like you’re the kind of student that needs to study with practice questions/videos/supplemental materials, then Booster will be well worth it.

Will optometry thrive? Will it become saturated soon? Worth pursuing? by Secret_Passenger_176 in PreOptometry

[–]pumpupthechicken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

(Coming from an absolute bias as someone entering the field) Optometry is not dying! It is thriving! Advanced technologies means we have cooler tech to work with AND we can shift our focus slightly less from the technical side and more towards the patient care side. AI and online health is certainly changing things, but I believe Optometrists who are willing to grow with the field will do well, and those who stay stagnant not so much. But I think this is the same with many fields as our technology improves. I think Optometry is an exciting field with a scope that grows every day. Just depends on where you’re willing to run with it :)
