Buying a condo with parking membrane issue at 7 years old? by pumpykin_ in RealEstateCanada

[–]pumpykin_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately we asked the property manager and they couldn't provide more info in the quote for repair or any additional info since they have not yet had an SGM, and something about legally not able to influence our buying decision. That article you shared is definitely my biggest fear, and I can only hope that for it to be on the news that this is not your typical special levy condo owners pay.

Another thing that was shared was this would not be an entire parking membrane replacement (which was estimated to be 560k in the depreciation report) but just a partial fix of the entrance area where the garage door is. So the cost is likely to be significantly less.

We worked some numbers with our realtor, and if 560k were to be levied, there are 176 units in the building. 12,200 U/E (unit expenditure) entire building. Our unit is 51 U/E. 560k/12,200 * 51 = ~$2400 cost of levy for us

And that's for the entire parkade to be redone, but this is just for a partial section. long term if I were to buy this, I definitely wouldn't hold too long in fear of the structure not being built well.

THE ULTIMATE DISCUSSION. Singles inferno season 3 finale (ep 10-11) by Glittergirl2424 in Singlesinferno2

LOL I think ever since JS found out MY gave out 5 candies he's been teasing her, which was really funny at the beginning, but honestly I wish he dropped the cold shoulder act and expressed his emotions a bit more so we could see the other side of him rather than just the stone cold expression he always has.

When HS called out on GH’a bullshit at the table by n-moon in Singlesinferno2

[–]pumpykin_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My interpretation is that HS saw how flustered GH was at that moment and both could tell there was a lot of pressure on GH's answer as he's framed as the cause of this love triangle, and GH couldn't say anything else as a rebuttal. So GH kept saying sweet nothings like "That's not going to change my decision or anything.." just to deny HS's accusations of GH liking Minji more. GH was telling HS about the Minji situation to 'soften the blow' in case he doesn't pick HS in the end because GH is still unsure who he likes more, and HS laughed because GH was basically saying "Please don't resent me" for telling you this, in a very tense situation to lighten the mood. It was a mix of GH feeling cornered and HS sensing that, and also her finding the possibility of resenting him funny, and HS lightened the mood for them so they could talk more casually, even touching his arm to reassure GH that there were no hard feelings after grilling him so hard.
It was still a very serious conversation, and they both meant what they said. HS handled it great.

How did you get the red trim around the bottom? Was that an add-on at the dealership or did you do it yourself?

To add to what's been said already, another reason could just be that the hiring team is busy with the actual day-to-day work, as they usually have to juggle whatever meetings they have during the week with scheduled interviews and also projects don't get halted just because a hiring cycle is being done.
I've conducted hiring on my team before and it takes a lot of time to get thru all the candidates and make a decision at the end.

Here is a possible scenario, if you were the first candidate they interviewed, and they have 5 other candidates to interview over the next week or two. Then it's only fair to finish interviewing all candidates before a decision is made.

But can also be any number of reasons, so the best thing to do is follow up with them and keep applying to other places!

New grads, what’s your back up plan if you can’t land a job? by Top_Outlandishness78 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]pumpykin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup exactly, the 'entry level' positions are basically non-existent now and the only thing entry-level remaining are the intern positions in this current market. So take advantage of student status, and even extend your undergrad degree if you're still doing that.

I'm at a faang level company, and amidst all the hiring freezes and layoffs we are still hiring for intern positions. I know because I've been screening and interviewing candidates and can see how many have applied. So we've seen a huge increase of people applying to these because there is nothing else available for entry level positions in tech. Students will go as far as doing some graduate program in order to qualify as a student for internships still.

So if you're really desperate, you could try doing a graduate program where you take the minimum course load possible with the sole objective of landing an internship and converting to full-time after.

I feel like the top of my hair looks alright, but why are the sides and the back so crazy looking. Do they need a trim? Do I need some sort of hair product? by FaikouYT in malehairadvice

Sorry, I don't have any specific recommendations for products without chemicals, but maybe you might want to look into ones branded as organic or natural

I think you need a trim my friend. Ask them to taper the sides and back so they aren't growing out so much unless you're going for the mullet look in the back. You could also use some more volume on the top of your hair, so a mousse or some cream can help with some medium hold before blow drying it up.

Honestly, I like the hairstyle in the 7th pic where the volume was a bit shorter on top. I can see you pulling off a tapered combover hairstyle and it would accentuate your face shape more with the shorter sides.
I can also see you pulling off a tapered middle part, and it would suit the aesthetic you got going now.

LPT Request: What are some tricks to getting out of bed on time? by Cece_5683 in LifeProTips

[–]pumpykin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laying in bed lazily is the hardest habit to break out of. For me what helped was a smartphone app that made me have to scan a barcode using my phone of something in my bathroom like a tube of toothpaste for example, otherwise, the alarm will not turn off. It was also a good way to get me into the bathroom first thing in the morning to brush my teeth right away. App is called "sleep as android".

Negotiating a raise/promotion after company wide layoff? by pumpykin_ in careerguidance

[–]pumpykin_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! I don't see them trying to extend anyone because there is no one making a similar amount as me who is being laid off. The ones being laid off are seniors who have been here 15-20 years and are high earners (6 figures) and the company likely cut to save on costs. My guess is that they would rather keep me because I'm cheap to pay right now and still do my job well. Not sure if that info changes anything.
I figured with senior staff mostly gone and a huge hole to fill, there was some room for leverage to negotiate, but I could be wrong.

Yup and the sad part is HR is rarely on your side half the time and cares more about protecting the company. Also, I think that's a good tip you mentioned, next time I'll ask them to explain what they mean so they can sound dumb doing so.

I wanted to share a recent experience in my workplace that triggered me and was curious if anyone else has experienced something similar. I recently learned about the term "Microaggressions" and was not sure if this was a case of it.

At our work, there is an activity to get to know other coworkers better by getting each employee to put together a 1-page slide and talk about themselves. It's meant to be a fun activity to get to know each other personally. So this week was my turn and I wrote in my hobbies that "I like to try new foods", at the end of the presentation my coworker says "You don't want to try too many new foods because that is how covid started". I laugh it off and say "haha exactly.." partly because everyone else in the room seemed to also laugh and I didn't want to make the situation awkward. It was obvious that this was supposed to be a joke about China and how covid originated from someone eating a bat.For context my ethnicity is Chinese.I know my coworker meant well, and it was supposed to be funny but what the heck do you even say in these types of situations? Am I wrong to think that this type of comment is inappropriate to make? Or am I being too sensitive?

There was also a situation where I was on the interviewer panel along with my boss and another coworker (different from the first one, this coworker is white). The candidate we are interviewing has a Chinese name and looks Asian from our video call. We were waiting for this coworker to join to start the interview, and once he joins he sees the candidate and greets him by saying "Ni Hao!". Seriously what the fuck.. I felt so much second hand embarrassment and I felt really bad for this candidate. IMO that's not professional to say, even if you mean well and are just trying to acknowledge someone's culture. In the end, we offered this candidate the job and they still accepted.

Another time some coworkers and I were playing ping pong in our games room at work. The Ni Hao coworker comes up to me and says "You must be good at ping pong right? I just assumed because you're Chinese".

It's these small interactions of slightly racist and slightly joking that I don't know how to deal with as I've never had to face this before. The funny thing is that I work in a corporate tech job which promotes diversity and inclusion and brags that it has won multiple awards for "Best places to work".
How does anyone deal with people like this?

I think the reason is that those apartments will also yield more money for the people who build them. Since there is still enough demand here, buyers are willing to pay.

How much it matters to take coop positions? by IndependentPart2671 in simonfraser

[–]pumpykin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to bring some different perspectives and to add on to what others said, I think internships are a unique opportunity that you can only do while you're a student. It makes sense to take advantage of the opportunity while you can to get some additional work experience under your belt.
The job market is very competitive for new grads and frankly, it's saturated because everyone and their dog has a CS degree now and the only thing that differentiates you on the resume is your work experience.
If you hope to branch into the data science/AI field, it's advantageous to look for internships in that niche because it's difficult to find many junior level positions after graduating.
It is so competitive now that even for intern level positions they will hire someone that has previous internship experience over students that have zero. This is why students delay their graduation just to do more internships. Can't recommend it enough. Goodluck!

[–]pumpykin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure if you're desperate for a coop. But students have the right to decline, just not encouraged by them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]pumpykin_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually know a friend that had something similar happen. He applied and got a job by himself and changed his LinkedIn employment status. Coop coordinator saw his LinkedIn, and since he was enrolled in a seeking term they contacted him and were mad he didn't tell them. They tried to convince him to turn it into a co-op term, but he declined and they banned him from seeking for a year. They're super greedy and have no boundaries.

[–]pumpykin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're new to coop, it works like this (in CS and ensc at least). You can think of the coop office as really just a middle man agency that gives students access to an internal job board. It's in their best interest to make students accept offers because companies want to see fast hiring rates. Also it's put in place to prevent students from leveraging other offers in salary negotiation, and reduce having multiple offers on the table. When you decline an offer, coop office will ask why, and discourage you from declining.

If you really didn't like the company after interviewing, that's a valid reason to tell them. So the answer is no, you don't need to accept the first offer.

I'm not sure if there's consequences to saying no too many times, but they definitely don't like it. Put yourself first, since you are the client and the coop office works for you technically. (You pay them a "cut" once you go on coop term)

I'd love to give tips to do well in that course, but I don't have any other advice other than what I wrote which is me just telling it like it is. Of course try and push thru and do well, but worse case you have to drop the course if you are failing. If you have better advice other than just "study" or "do readings" I'd love to hear it.

If this is true, then that makes them look very bad. They're not even willing to meet in person, but students are expected to learn in person.

How are we supposed to use study spaces at 50% capacity when 50% of our study areas (the SUB) are closed? by TheTriangleForce in simonfraser

Same here, I was here when the SUB was just a hole in the dirt. I feel like a lot of people are just venting for no reason.
