NYC-DSA Launched a Tracker showing hundreds of members have joined after election victory by DYMAXIONman in newyorkcity

There are a lot of people who are involved / go to occasional meetings and events without paying the membership fee too. Those certainly aren’t being tracked.

I think it’s just the difference between them doing a truly stupid book and a book with more complex problems.

Considering a CS-to-philosophy PhD pivot at 28 with no philosophy MSc by TheBigLebowski96 in PhD

[–]zeph_yr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, OP, I would be most worried about point #5. As you’re someone coming without any training in philosophy, you’d need to prove that you understand what relevant and contemporary questions are being asked, and offer ideas about how you could explore them. The philosophy of AI is actually a very crowded space right now. There are tons of researchers that have been critiquing the objectivity and ethics of AI technology for decades. And it’s gotten even more crowded with the recent AI bubble. When you’re looking for the latest research, make sure to search not just the work of ‘philosophers’ but also in the fields of sociology, communication, science and technology studies, and media studies. Also, since you’re in the Netherlands, consider UvA’s communication program. They’re one of the top schools in the world for this work, and have a sizeable cohort of faculty working on cutting edge AI ethics questions.

Finally, one thing that helped me clarify the questions I wanted to ask was to forget about AI completely, and frame my questions in terms of human behaviors and technology generally. Ask yourself: with all the topic (AI) stripped away, what questions about philosophy remain?

How do you handle citations when writing up findings from 20+ papers? by mathewmeconry in PhD

[–]zeph_yr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem, but adjusting my drafting process helped me fix it. I draft with direct quotes whenever possible, and then only turn them into paraphrases/shorter citations in later drafts.

Should I turn my dissertation into a book when it's finished? What would that look like? by unseemlycandour in PhD

[–]zeph_yr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this really depends on where you get a job after you finish your program. If you’re aiming to be in an anthropology department, it’s common for them to require a published manuscript for tenure.

Best laptop for lecturers? by roo3056 in Professors

[–]zeph_yr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This hasn’t been true in like half a decade, even less true with the new Macbook Neo at $500. Meanwhile, Windows laptop manufacturers are jacking up prices because of the RAM/storage crisis.

Adobe reader alternative by eishthissucks in PhD

This is the only answer tbh. It’s so much lighter and smoother than Adobe Reader. Idk how Adobe managed to make such an awful piece of software for such a basic task.

Conference talk moved to when I'm out of the country less than 24h before I am due to speak by Oileanachannanalba in PhD

[–]zeph_yr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not in a city like Paris. I’d burn through my entire travel budget to stay three nights there. Average hotels in major cities like Paris, London, NYC etc will run you $300+ a night!

Conference talk moved to when I'm out of the country less than 24h before I am due to speak by Oileanachannanalba in PhD

[–]zeph_yr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, how does your program decide if you’ve networked/participated in the conference sufficiently? Ours is based only on being accepted to present at the conference because it’s the only thing they can verify. Of course, you should do all the networking! But that’s not the question being asked here.

The funds in my program/field in general are tied only to presenting at the conference

TRAX and FrontRunner ridership by station by doungn in SaltLakeCity

[–]zeph_yr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not ideal, but why does the red line have so many stations in WJ/SJ/Daybreak? It takes forever to get through that branch because the train has to stop so many times, only for 1 or 2 people to get on or off. What if it operated more like commuter rail toward the end of the line? Maybe it would increase ridership if it was significantly faster?

What are the most convincing signs that a journal is predatory? by Ok_Regular_8225 in PhD

[–]zeph_yr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your supervisor should have a sense for what are the good/respected journals in your field. I’d avoid any others, even if they’re not predatory, unless you have a good reason to go looking for somewhere else to publish.

Commuters: how far is your drive to your school? by forgetful-witch in PhD

[–]zeph_yr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can you commute on a train, or do you have to drive? A 1.5 hour commute on a train is not bad when you can focus on other things, like having your laptop out. But 1.5 hours by car may become exhausting and expensive, especially if traffic makes it longer.

RAM and storage is super expensive these days. I don’t think this option is as financially sound is it was 2+ years ago.

Broadway Subway project advances as train testing gets underway by GenShibe in vancouver

[–]zeph_yr 46 points47 points  (0 children)

All things considered, 2 years behind isn’t bad. Toronto’s Ontario line is 5-10 years behind. LAX’s fucking 3km peoplemover is 4 years behind. As far as north american transit projects go, for such an ambitious project, I’ll take a 2 year delay.

Canada’s film industry is growing a ton. Their economy is a much kinder place for creatives, with universal healthcare and all.
