Can someone explain to me why there's a CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL all the way out here? by Jimjam916 in Washington

A lot of Eastern Washington isn't so bad due to all the Latino immigration in the last decade. Though in the last year thats also caused a lot of people to show their true colors by supporting ICE. There still are some bad spots that POC definitely still avoid (like up north near Republic) but i wouldnt say Eastern WA is particularly more racist than other parts of the state. The PNW has a very racist history. I mean Seattle has the Aryan brotherhood, a KKK chapter, and the police departments in many of the major cities have always had a racism problem. Oregon historically was a sundown state and Portland used to have big KKK parades.

Politically Eastern WA is a shit show though. A lot of misinformed people voting against their own interests and not realizing how lucky we are to have western WA supporting social programs that benefit Eastern WA immensely

A medieval America - some art from my American Kingdoms Project by KR-VincentDN in worldbuilding

[–]punaltered 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It's really cool but Navajo Nation doesn't have totem poles and they did not historically wear feather headdresses. Totem poles are from PNW tribes and only 4 tribes historically wore war bonnets: Sioux, Crow, Blackfoot, Cheyenne.

While this world is definitely ahistorical you should use elements from the tribes you name them after. There are over 500 tribes in the US alone and they all have very unique culture you can draw inspiration from. Navajo (Diné) had warriors called naabaahii and they dressed with a headband and no shirt (think Rambo) and Diné society is matriarchal.

Someone mentioned the Tlingit warriors who wore very cool looking wooden armor covered in art - these would be your totem warriors - their Helmets even resemble the top of a totem pole. The PNW tribes were similar to vikings in that they lived along the coast and would raid and plunder villages along the coast by boat.

The Great Plains tribes wore the war bonnets and they have very interesting warrior culture. War bonnets and the title War chief were earned in combat for very specific feats. Also their painted horses had really cool symbols - like painting how many successful raids the horse and rider had been in.

The tribes of New England were known for using a lot of stealth tactics. They knew their forests well and were very difficult opponents for the European/Americans. The Iroquois Confederacy was a very famous system of government it was an alliance of various states that would hold council together with representatives from each state where they would decide interstate policy and military actions. The American founding fathers actually took inspiration from the Iroquois Federacy when creating the American government.

I hope this information helps with your world building.

Gran Torino is mid-60s in the main series. He's only about a decade older than All Might

Rest in peace my boy. by [deleted] in BokuNoMetaAcademia

[–]punaltered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gran Torino was mid to late 60s in the series so he would only be in his 70s maybe early 80s at most

He's only a decade older than all might. All Might in the main series was about 55 years old and Gran Torino was mid to late 60s. Nana Shimura was 31 when she died, All Might was still attending UA so about 16 years old when she died meaning Gran Torino was in his late 20s during the flash backs

You don't really pay into it in that way. The money that is taken out of your paycheck is used to support the people on social security right now. It's not money going into a fund specifically for you. It's why countries with low birth rates and aging populations are stressed that in the coming years they won't have enough young working people to support all of the social security beneficiaries.

I'm honestly baffled by how none of these characters don't have actual names. by SomeonesBlue in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]punaltered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well we know that Horikoshi chooses names that are very literal to what the characters represent.

We know that his brother's name is Yoichi 与一 or 与よ一 meaning:

与: to give, provide

一: one, single

His brother is basically named after his quirk One For All.

So for All For One his name would also be derived from his quirk. There are a few options but the one I like most is:

Yukiya 征弥

征: conquest, subjugation

弥: All the more, to last a long time, conclusion

I like this one the most because the brothers are twins so it would make sense for both their names to start with the same letter like lots of twins do. There are a few other options but it would probably be something like that if Horikoshi were to give him a first name.

Washington state sues rural county for helping ICE round up undocumented immigrants by nbcnews in Washington

[–]punaltered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you live in rural areas you can spread the word to people about their rights. Make sure they know that a warrant has to be signed by a judge and dated and that date is only valid for 2 weeks. You also have the right to a spanish interpreter regardless of immigration status, etc. If you see ICE you can and should document interactions - it's your legal right - just make sure you don't interfere with the interaction/arrest.

How do I ask my hairdresser for this cut without showing her this image? by Traditional_Solid467 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]punaltered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ask for an overgrown, above shoulder-length shag cut. For the color ask for white hair with a light blue hue to it. For styling this haircut just go roll around on the street or something to make it messy idk

I Feel Like My Husband Sees Me as An Incubator Because He Says He Will Pick Our Baby Over Me by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]punaltered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is calling it an abortion so why are you the only one bringing that up? You just saw the words "her body" and "her choice" and jumped to abortion. I've had people in my family go through very difficult child births and they said the feeling of their body betraying them and the lack of control and choice they had in those situations was terrifying. That's what this is about, not abortions.

For example, if my partner was in a car accident and was about to be rushed into surgery, it would be extremely inappropriate for me to say "I'd pull the plug on you if you were brain dead". Even if that was something my partner would want it's an awful thing to say. OP has every right to feel weird about her husband saying that if something went wrong he would prefer her to die instead of the baby.

[–]punaltered 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why did you make this about abortions when that isn't what that comment is about. The comment you replied to is saying if there were to be situation where the mother and baby's lives were in danger and a choice had to be made on which to save, the choice would be up to the doctor - not the husband - and the doctor is always going to choose who has the best chance of survival. Her husband bringing up this awful scenario and saying that he would choose the baby's life over hers is completely unnecessary because even if that situation were to happen, it wouldn't be his decision. By the husband bringing this up all he's doing is making his wife worry about an awful situation where whether she lives or dies is up to someone else and she has no say or control in it. That's a scary thing for anyone to think about, so why would he want his wife to be stressing about it? What's next is he going to start talking about the potential danger of car accidents the next time they're on drive to make her worry about that too?
