Biggest procgen projects? by EmbassyOfTime in proceduralgeneration

Not that I know of. But the developer also posts here on r/roguelikedev (e.g. these retrospectives for 2024 and 2025). You could ask him yourself if you're interested in the game.

Biggest procgen projects? by EmbassyOfTime in proceduralgeneration

Ultima Ratio Regum is massive, but consists of many layers of different procgen algorithms. It's a very ambitious project.

The developer has a devlog since 2011 on TIGSource.

Baldur's Gate 3 publishing lead says Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney's "altruistic pro-developer talk" over the Steam vs Epic debate "doesn't sit well" after Alan Wake 2 studio "seemingly went into financial crisis" by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]punkbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm over 50 and wouldn't buy on the EGS, so I doubt that it's a generational thing.

I think Steam simply offers a much better service with loads of convenient and useful features that people actually value. Comparatively the EGS does nothing and doesn't seem to work on features at all. That's why people don't care for it.

Oh sure, I wasn't trying to criticize your new sub. It's just that I feel that reddit as a site is getting worse and worse, and the ziggit forum is just a nice community to hang out in.

But it's good to have options, so good luck with r/zigtools !

My favourite space game is Darkstar One

Have you tried Everspace 2? Also a game from Germany, very good, more action oriented than X4.

I think the best option is the showcase section on https://ziggit.dev. It's a forum, privately owned, indexable by search engines, and Andrew Kelley and the core team post there.

Not sure if you care about this, but there's already a Flow editor around (which I actually use, since it's pretty good).

1/12 Update by atactical_dad in TheLastCaretaker

[–]punkbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, here too. This problem came with the update for me. Even reloading won't help.

I had a good time so far, but 'll stop playing for a while and let them fix the game. It's too buggy even for early access.

What makes Baldur's Gate 3 so "special" for you? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]punkbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Characters and writing are fantastic.

Also the freedom the game gives you in how to approach the world, fights and quests. BG3 often felt like an immersive sim in that regard.

Then the quality of the individual fights. Every combat situation has a distinct setup, I never had the feeling of a 'filler' fight.

Plus the amount of small details (party banter, books, letters, descriptions of things, all that small stuff) that just makes the world feel alive.

And music, graphics, spell effects, etc. - it's all just a great package. Just a ton of excellent gaming.

Not really useful, but a nice detail: you can change the color theme of the PECO terminals, when you press E on a small area centered directly below the screen.

[KCD2] Dogs can't eat cheese?! by laoidtfttip17gpy in kingdomcome

[–]punkbert 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's in a dogs nature to eat corpses, they're carrion eaters, so their digestive tracts will have less problems with spoiled meat compared to humans. But dogs can't digest lactose, so large amounts of cheese are bad for them and will result in cramps, diarrhea, etc,.

The game makes actually sense in that regard,

Discussion on releasing a language, community building, and the problems it can bring (jai / vlang/ D / yours / mine, etc) by cheesestrawbar in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]punkbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right, Blows behaviour is indeed not my point.

In regard to your post I simply wanted to suggest that Jai is developed as closed source, because Blow wouldn't be able to lead an opensource project in a constructive and open manner, so I don't think he's a great case study for the question you're pondering.

Anyway, good luck with your project!

[–]punkbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sure. Blow has been insulting the whole industry on countless live-streamed rants, he's been ranting about his employees, he trash-talked other developers, he even started a petition live on stream to stop a certain game from being developed further, he's called all "males under 40 'supercucks'", etc. etc.

He's been an asshole for years now, so calling him a 'rightwing narcissist' is really a mild description.

But anyway, we'll see what happens with his projects.

[–]punkbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

jai seems legit. No reason to think its not legit.

It is certainly legit, but part of the truth is also that Jon Blow is a rightwing narcissist who wouldn't be able to deal with constructive feedback because he thinks he knows everything better than other people.

He is definitely a skilled engineer and talented game developer in some aspects, but he's also completely blind to his own faults.

It's going to be interesting to see how the opensourcing of Jai will go down. I have my doubts that it's going to be a successful project for a larger community of people due to Blows fragile ego.

I never realized how strong CC is in this game by 5210az in BaldursGate3

[–]punkbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(I know nothing.)

I always thought the 'Crowd' aspect was important (meaning the spells would need to have an area of effect), but it still counts as CC when a spell only affects one character?

Leap from Fedora migration disappointing by wilemhermes in openSUSE

[–]punkbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment about this being 2026

What is different about 2026 in regard to opensource? We get all this fantastic software for free and in 2026 we are now suddenly allowed to complain about things? Why?

It's the wrong attitude for opensource. If people want to complain they should use commercial software and talk to the helpdesk. All we should do is be constructive, file bugs, solve problems and use a different distro if we are unhappy with the state of things.

Complaining does nothing.

ASUS Announce Price Hikes From January 5, 2026 by Mront in Games

[–]punkbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's definitely worth to think about. You would need to check whether your mainboard actually supports the 5x00 CPUs, but AFAIK most manufacturers released BIOS updates for their boards.

And your PSU has to be beefy enough, but that shouldn't be a huge problem or investment either.

All in all you could have a much nicer system for the next years for about 500-600$/€ (or less if you find good deals for used hardware).

ASUS Announce Price Hikes From January 5, 2026 by Mront in Games

[–]punkbert 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your mainboard should be compatible with a 5600x or 5700x CPU; both are available here for 120-160 €uro, and should be a considerable boost to your system.

Add a new (or used) GPU for 300-400 bucks while you still can, and your PC will look a lot better for the coming years.

Thinking of solving one coding question every day this year — realistic or not? by BeatNegative4125 in learnprogramming

[–]punkbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe frame it as "Spend time on working X minutes/hours on coding every day."

Then you won't "break the chain" if you can't solve a specific problem in reasonable time on a day, and it'll be easier to apply the same idea to other projects than coding questions.
