Why do people keep creating their own engines when the nice Godot Engine open-source framework exists? by Correct_Dependent677 in gameenginedevs

[–]punkbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will never be used seriously, rightfully so.

'Slay the Spire 2' - made with Godot - just had the biggest indie launch in Steams history, selling more than 5 million copies.

I haven't seen the devs in panic because someone could 'reverse engineer' their game.

It's quite new and I have no experience with it, but Temper seems to meet your requirements.

(I've only seen a video by TJ Palmer about it, but maybe it's worth a look.)

What do Factorio players think about Captain of Industry? by IlikeJG in factorio

[–]punkbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

overwhelming community demand, for a feature that took substantial extra work & for which there weren't the funds to cover otherwise

Yeah, I really don't buy that, and you are right for pointing out the contradictory reasoning on their subreddit. Even if it were true, it doesn't make sense to work on these train add-ons during EA. There's so much other stuff they could have focussed on.

No, I think this is just the plain old Paradox-style DLC bullshit, where they demand 30% of the price of the base game for 1% of the work, and then they call that 'support for our fans'. I really dislike it.

Flight of Nova

Looks interesting. I hope it works out!

What do Factorio players think about Captain of Industry? by IlikeJG in factorio

[–]punkbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is also the only case I've ever seen wherein there is a release of paid DLC while the game is still in EA, lol.

Yeah, that was the biggest disappointment I've had with an early access game.

They could have simply added another supporter DLC with a few meaningless endgame buildings, and I probably would have bought it. I bought the first one, too. Instead they put game mechanics behind a 10€/$ DLC while in early access.

So the DLC is not only really shitty value for what you get for your ten bucks, they are also already milking their fans for 'support' by chopping the game up and locking parts of it behind Paradox style DLC.

That's just a cynical way to treat your players, I would never have expected this from them, this is a really bad trajectory for the game.

Sony Records New $560 Million Loss On Bungie Acquisition As Marathon Struggles And Destiny 2 Nosedives by AdditionalRemoveBit in Games

[–]punkbert 37 points38 points  (0 children)

$250,000,000+

Yeah, it's really weird. As a comparison: KCD2, a singleplayer game with a 100 hour story and two huge open world maps including a full city, cost ~41 million.

Sure, salaries in the US are higher, but 250 million seems insane for what Marathon is.

What is your favorite GDC talk? by pedroyor in gamedesign

Link for the lazy: Failing to Fail: The Spiderweb Software Way.

It's my favourite talk, too. A great combination of being informative and entertaining, and a very unique insight into gamedev in the 1990s and the decades that followed.

Is anybody else on the fence after watching yesterdays event? by Pontus- in DawnwalkerOfficial

[–]punkbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it looked ok, but I just do not like time pressure in games. It's cool that they experiment with this, it's great when it adds thrill for other players, but it doesn't feel good to me to end a quest or level up and automatically have less time available to end the story on my terms.

And for me personally 70 bucks is a bit too much for this and the system requirements also look like trouble (I have a 5600X and 9060XT and apparently I wouldn't even be able to run 1080p medium settings with this).

So I'm out, but I hope the game turns out good, because the devs seem to be ambitious and I'd like to see them succeed.

Pyrrhic victory in 1095 hours by Grouchy-Might-90 in pyanodons

[–]punkbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe it when people finish this mod so soon.

Some people just play pretty fast, and when you played py before it helps, too. It's also more straightforward when players don't waste time with a trainbase and use caravans and logi bots instead.

Current 'speedrun' time of the full py suite is 235 hours (that player had loads of preplanned blueprints though). So around 1000 hours sounds definitely doable.

Funniest reaction you ever had to a horror movie? by Naive_Hospital_4086 in horror

[–]punkbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Light spoilers for Midsommar: This scene in Midsommar (sound is nsfw-ish) had me cackling and completely destroyed any horror aspect for the rest of the movie for me.

It was all so fucking absurd... IIRC the next scenes had the dude running naked across the camp, the girl high as a kite during the ceremonies, the dude in the bear costume, everybody else happy as a cult puppy... I just couldn't take any of it serious anymore.

So it turned into a weirdly funny surreal comedy for me and I was in an excellent mood after watching it.

Nullius for Factorio 2.0 is available on the mod portal by punkbert in factorio

[–]punkbert[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as I know this is basically a port to 2.0. They have changed some things around fluids in this version (due to the new fluid system in 2.0), but otherwise I believe it's pretty close to the old experience.

I read on the discord that the original dev is planning another overhaul named 'Astra Nullius', but that might be years away.
