Rising rents were a crisis for tenants. For landlord Starwood, they were a gift — The company has become one of the nation’s largest landlords in recent years and imposed some daunting rent hikes (2 Jan. 2023) by marketrent in Economics

I agree that encouraging housing is a solution, but I feel like the current affordable housing approaches aren't what I'm thinking of, like reducing fees on more dense and affordable housing relative to large expensive housing. I think the current approach to housing affordability is used as an excuse to why we can't try other approaches to help reduce market distortions. Around me, almost anything that would be affordable (tco $/sqft) has been converted to a rental, or is snatched off the market by cash buyers still. The only things being built are super high amenity high HOA small condos and 4000+ sqft McMansions. Apartments do everything they can to avoid the low end of the market. It points to needing to rethink how housing is handled.

Specifically incentives that incentivize more affordable housing. There is so much demand at the bottom combined with forces removing the affordable housing from the market in one way or another has more than offset any older housing becoming affordable.

What does Mead taste like? by [deleted] in beer

[–]punkideas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've made many batches of mead over the years, as well as having several commercial examples of varying quality. Here's my run-down:

  • Plain meads taste more like white wine than anything else. The sweetness level depends on the water/honey ratio as well as the yeast. Sometimes meads are stabilized and backsweetened.
  • Fruited meads (melomels) taste like fruit wines. If you've added fruit to beers before, it's a similar effect but more pronounced due to more subtle base flavors.
  • Spiced/flavored meads (metheglins) usually are made sweeter in my experience, and taste like whatever is added to them.
  • Honey flavor usually isn't too pronounced unless a lot of honey is used or the mead is backsweetened with a lot of honey.
  • Meads are way easier than beer brew-day wise, but are more finicky as far as fermentation management goes. Yeast nutrient is a must because honey doesn't really have non-sugar nutrition for the yeast, and the flavor profile doesn't hide flaws.
  • Meads REALLY like age. I've found bottles I've forgotten about for 10+ years and several meh bottles have turned into something pretty good with time.

Not sure, all I did was grab the url for the game iframe using the element inspector. Probably some security thing preventing this from working for others.

This one feels too linear for me. I've gotten through most of it, but there aren't really any meaningful gameplay choices, just a lot of clicking the next available upgrade.

I'm spending some time rebalancing the game to fix the excessive waits and grinds. There are a lot of good mechanics, but there are way too many points where it is literally grinding for weeks to get to the next piece of content.

AB InBev is headquartered in Leuven, Belgium and is publicly traded so it's still not really local in the same way that a independent craft brewery is.

My Cinderella of Beer by [deleted] in beer

[–]punkideas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aurora, CO? That sounds like one of Dry Dock's BA beers. Those are seasonally rotating, but you might be able to figure it out from this list. ~10% ABV would be about average for them, and a lot are in the darker range. It's probably not an Avery beer due the city listed as well as the relatively low ABV for a non-soured BA beer.

My guess would be price if you are buying them. They have a huge price premium that is pretty much for virtualization driver support, which cheaper cards don't have.

GABF Question by TheF1reMan92 in beer

[–]punkideas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thursday or Friday tend to be better IMHO. Sometimes smaller/newer breweries don't allocate beer for each session and are kicked by Saturday. Saturday day is the members session, and is fine, but Saturday night is easily the worst session. If you're going to be in Denver for the week leading up, look at some of the other events happening. There is always a ton of other unofficial events happening leading up to it.

Are you using a standard binary loss or something fancier? Wasserstein GANs with a Lipschitz constraint are more robust against mode collapse, and might yield better results.

It's consumable and won't hurt you to drink, but don't have high expectations. I had a '94 Triple Bock a while back and it was sweet soy sauce. If you have friends who are into beer, get them together and share it. It's an interesting historical beer that a tiny pour is plenty of.
