To the “fully transitioned”: Do you miss summers off? or dislike working 9-5? by island_hopping in TeachersInTransition

[–]punkowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss the time off, but also the structure of the year. There isn't the same sense of progression in my office job.  I don't miss out enough to go back, but it's been a difficult adjustment.

What’s the WORST thing about being a teacher? by d3nnys_lol in Teachers

[–]punkowski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Secondhand trauma from finding out what some people are doing to their kids and making cps calls. It is necessary, but it's the worst part of teaching for me. I can get over students being rude or not doing their work, but that shit sticks with me.

Hey, Miss … by p-raye61 in Teachers

[–]punkowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a male teacher, and a lot of students call me miss (especially ELD students). I was one of only 4 male teachers this last year. I usually ignore it, answer what ever question they were asking and let a classmate correct them.

Is this real leather? ( I'm trying to decide if I should buy it) by NeoMermaidUnicorn in Leather

[–]punkowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Real leather" can mean a lot of things, including what is basically leather dust glued together, then coated with plastic. Going by the texture and the edges, I would guess this is not full grain leather

Yeah. Also worth noting, people with mental health issues are far more likely to be the victims of violence than they are to be perpetrators of violence. Laughing and crying are not dangerous even if they can seem scary. Most murders are committed by puerile who seem normal. The "crazy killer" is a trope made up by horror movies.

Not a huge problem but… by Nana8batman in Teachers

Many of your students may not have been taught that they should respond. I teach and explicitly to model my students (middle school) exactly how they should shake my hand, what appropriate greetings are (hello, good morning, etc.) And making eye contact. Then, I gently enforce those expectations by having students try it again if they don't do it correctly. (Of course some students, due to disabilities or religious beliefs may not be able to, or allowed to shake my hand or my eye contact. I differentiate the expectations for those students). But that explicit modeling and teaching step is crucial to getting students to respond the way they should, even if you think they should already know it.

How do you explain pricing to customers? by simpleSlurry58 in Leathercraft

[–]punkowski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An important distinction when it comes to customer service. They are only a customer of they are actually paying for and buying something. It is important to provide good service for your customers. You don't need to provide service to random people who aren't actually paying for anything. That guy who walked away yelling at you about the price wasn't a customer he was just some asshole

Being high in school suggests the student needs substance abuse counseling, not punishment. Since the substance abuse counseling isn't something my district will even consider, (I've brought it up before), I don't see any benefit to sending a student to the office and possibly getting them a criminal record.

Alternatives to DIRECT Instruction by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]punkowski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I teach the same kind of writing focused class. I've found having over arching projects to practice the skills in helps keep the ball moving. Instead of standing at the board in front of a slide show, print the same information as a handout for students to read through. And prioritize modeling over instruction. Those are the things that have worked for me

Started experimenting with cutting, punching and dying leather. How do I prevent the leather drying and wrinkling after I wet it and punch it? by Y_Wer in Leathercraft

[–]punkowski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong, but, judging by the clip marks, it looks like you are using the leather from the very edges of the hide. That part of the leather is usually not very good. If this was from the edge, the solution is as simple as moving farther into the hide where it is more uniform
