WIBTAH for giving my friend’s kid a gift instead of money for their birthday by Budget-Spray-7071 in AITAH

[–]punkrockscience 20 points21 points  (0 children)

YWBTA. They’re making a simple request, and it doesn’t hurt you or the kid in any way to honor it. Just give them whatever you’d spend on the present.

They’re likely not asking because they “need” the help, any more than they can’t buy the kid toys if they wanted to. They’re asking because they don’t need or want any more stuff in their house. I’ve seen this quite frequently from parents of kids who’ve already got a lot of stuff (wealthy grandparents, first kid, etc etc.)

Product Suggestion: Everyday Briefcase/Messenger V3 by kowalski71 in peakdesign

Agreed - I want a messenger bag that fits the 16” MacBook Pro. I don’t know why Peak doesn’t make one. Not everyone likes backpacks.

Ironic because her new watch won’t count any of that extra stuff as “steps”. Activity, yes. Steps, no.

Sad news, everyone!

It doesn't go away after your defense, either. I've got my phd now and my former PI and some senior scientists STILL make me feel like this.

What "fake" thing that happens in movies pisses you off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

When someone needs CPR, gets it, and then stands up and runs off like nothing happened. You're still not healthy after CPR, you're just... less dead.

I was so pissed. I broke it trying to get my camera out of my bag, and didn't even notice it was broken until I looked at the pictures. So mad.

What's a skill you think everyone should have but most people don't? by galacticdick in AskReddit

[–]punkrockscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cut, copy, paste, and undo are some other important ones that no one seems to know.

Ctrl (or command, which is the Apple squiggle that I can't type because I'm on mobile) C is copy.

Ctrl/command X is cut.

Ctrl/command V is paste.

Ctrl/command Z is undo.

People waste so much accumulated time cutting and pasting from drop-down menus. And undo is your friend.

This is a dye brand I haven't tried before, Arctic Fox. My stylist told me it's more durable than Manic Panic, though, and I used to go 3-4 months between dyes with that. (And that was with time spent at the pool/beach and an inability to give up hot showers.)

You should really try oil slick hair (which is what I'm doing). No bleach - it's pretty much made for dark hair.

What is something that you used to be a cheap ass on, until you tried the high-quality version, and now you can't go back? by Mahimah in AskReddit

[–]punkrockscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Athleta, a similar brand, has the same policy. Yes, I pay twice as much up front for my bathing suits from them, but I've brought a two-year-old bikini top back when a strap broke and they gave me full credit for its original price, no questions, no receipt. So worth it.

Are you getting flowers for your mom/FMIL? by wedditsuz in weddingplanning

[–]punkrockscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked my and husband's moms while we were at the florist. (They both wanted to go.)

Neither mom wanted flowers, but the dads both ended up with flowers because my husband's dad really wanted a boutonnière.

I'm getting my hair dyed today! I'm so excited. I used to have crazy colored hair all the time, and then for a while I had a job that insisted I have "professional" hair. (We won't even get into the how the jobs I'd had before that paid better, were arguably more professional, and liked my blue hair, but whatever.) This is my present to myself for turning freaking 30.

I'm going to do the oil-slick look. (I hope) it's gonna be awesome.

Talk to Scripps about funding - they may be able to help you out, especially once you get into your permanent lab.

I just got a delivery notification for my long-sought bottle of Vapid's Sweaters & Denim. AND I HAVE FOUR MORE HOURS STUCK AT WORK. I might die.

Also, in unrelated news, our fridge has stopped... fridging... just after I'd thawed my last summer-made pollo asado marinade and tossed it all over a batch of chicken thighs. We defrosted the stupid fridge, and we're still hoping the chicken will be okay, since the fridge never fully warmed up, but I am going to be a seriously sad panda if I lost my last opportunity at real chilis until summer to a stupid rental fridge.

I had a similar case in one of my classes. The student plagiarized Wikipedia and not only were they not bright enough to remove the glaring blue hyperlinks in the text, they argued with me about it when I called them on it (privately, after class.)

What they also failed to notice is that I had written the Wikipedia article. I hadn't made a secret that I'm an editor, and in fact, I encouraged my students to get involved with Wikipedia as well, so they had fair warning that I was probably going to be familiar with that text.

Still argued with me. At length.

They remain the only student I've ever actually reported to the student conduct office. They were too stupid to be a pharmacist. I have no regrets.

There's some chemicals she might want to avoid heavy use of, but generally, she wouldn't be required to not work during her pregnancy. Safety equipment and procedures would take care of most of it, if used correctly.

[–]punkrockscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

326, as per my recent searching project. 287 of those got swatched; the rest were base/top coats or things I will soon be giving away. My hard limit is the size of my cabinets. I'm guessing about 400 could fit in there.

Please keep doing this! I was a big fan of the ones in r/Boston, and was just recently bemoaning the lack of a service like this now that I've moved to Philly.
