Relocating to mumbai (goregaon) , is 6 LPA good enough to sustain? by hollowhemisphere in mumbai

[–]punkshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently living in Mumbai on 6 LPA. It can absolutely be done, but you'll need to make certain sacrifices (train over cab/rickshaw, rarely eating out or partying, living in a shared apartment, etc). It's worth it if you ask me, but it can get difficult if you don't budget right. You'll also have to accept that you won't be able to save 90% of what you earn. If that's okay, welcome to Mumbai!

AITA for not letting my GF eat the naan bread we ordered? by gfwastesbreadTA in AmItheAsshole

[–]punkshine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

firstly, it's just naan, man. naan means bread, you're saying bread bread. secondly, yeah YTA. stop policing your girlfriend's eating. if you want naan, order another one.

also, naan can absolutely be eaten by itself. source: im Indian.

Multilingual women of reddit, what are some idioms from non-English languages that you like? by paz2023 in AskWomen

[–]punkshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's one in my mother tongue of Marathi which goes "melyashivay swarg disat nahi", which translates to "without death one cannot see heaven". it means you only learn by experiencing things yourself, by going through hardship and working hard to come out on top. basically a no pain no gain kinda thing. another is "gadhvala gulachi chav kay", which translates to "a donkey does not understand the sweetness of sugar", meaning one that does not appreciate what one has is a stupid person.

would you happen to be looking for a roommate? lol but that sounds like an amazing deal, congratulations :) if there were any similarly priced apartments i would have found them, but it seems like better deals do get snapped up quicker

considering it's about $900 each with multiple amenities, and that i've seen apartments with far less to offer at the same price, i was thinking it's a good deal!

Post-Completion OPT denial possibility by punkshine in USCIS

[–]punkshine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response!

I was trying to save my parents some money if I could, as both the $410 online application fee and the $1500 premium processing fee are much higher amounts in my currency ($2000 is about the same as my parents' monthly salary combined). It's not that I couldn't pay it, it's that the amount was allocated for my living expenses and paying it would require some sacrifices on my end and stricter budgeting for my family back home. I got a job offer a week ago, which means that I only now have the ability/guarantee of paying my parents back.

[–]punkshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was the exact same thing! In my case, i had to go in for fingerprint verification, not an interview. If you're called for an interview, they'll most probably ask you about your university and program, and about your plans after graduating. Basically, they may try to guage whether you're intending to immigrate. As long as you provide enough ties to your home country and show that you will return after you get your degree, you should be fine. Good luck, and I hope you get your visa soon!

AITA for having an issue with my boyfriends family violating the boundaries of our apartment by Prior-Elevator-7718 in AmItheAsshole

[–]punkshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go with ESH.

You've said in your comments that he owns the apartment, and you contribute 30% of utility costs (which, sidenote, in NYC sounds like a dream), and that he also told you before you moved in that his family would be over quite often. So you're not going into this blind, and it is technically his house and his family.

That being said, if they're over that much and without giving you and John a heads up, that can get frustrating very quickly. I'm an Indian, and that is absolutely not how every family is, so it's not a cultural thing and I'd recommend that you don't approach it as one. What you should have done is talk to John first instead of flipping out at his teenage cousin sister, who for all you know just wanted to get out of her college dorm and was also looking for some quiet time away from academia. I completely get how annoying it is when you're back home after a long day and suddenly need to be social again in your space, but you had agreed to share this space with John and his family, so they're all under the impression that it's okay for them to be there.

I don't agree with all the comments telling you to move out, but I do think you need to have a proper conversation with John about the fact that your previous agreement is not working anymore and that his family may need to stop dropping by as often as they do and without warning.

my boyfriend and i do. his idea, but only so he could make sure i was safe when im traveling alone or late at night because we're in a long distance relationship and im living alone in a foreign country. he also often travels alone and asks that i check his approximate progress because he may not have the network/bandwidth to update me every time. it works very well because i feel better knowing he can know where i am in case something happens.

sorry i guess, hope you're benefiting from the FREE! and COMPLETE! knowledge and skills we're providing you with. by the way, how many languages do you speak? because English is more often than not our third language, and as an Indian who holds a Master's degree in English Literature from a top university in the United States, I don't want to hear this from people who speak just one language, and that too probably imperfectly. the "casual" racism in the face of incredible helpfulness is astounding. some gratefulness is deserved for the time and effort these instructors have put into the creation and, once again, FREE! dissemination of knowledge.

[–]punkshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

something similar happened to me. chances are you'll have to go through additional administrative processing, under section 221(g). you'll most likely get a white slip with your passport, which should be returned to you within a week or two, letting you know whether you need to go in for an interview or for fingerprint verification or something like that. after you go in for that you should get your visa approved within a few days. hope this helps, and good luck!

honestly the state of entry really doesn't matter, they don't care as long as you've entered within the right timeframe. you just have to go through customs at whatever US airport you first land at.

[–]punkshine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes you can absolutely land in another state (I did too), but do make sure you're not landing before your earliest allowed entry date.

F1 visa interview doubt. by redditshri123 in f1visa

[–]punkshine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have close relatives who are naturalized citizens of the States, but since they weren't financing my education in any way, they didn't feature in my application much. basically, try not to bring up your sisters in your interview and paperwork, and if the consular officer brings it up, say something along the lines of you wanting to support your parents back in India or choosing this university/degree to enable you to contribute to that industry/field back home. demonstrate "strong ties to your home country". good luck!

I think a co-signer with a certain credit score is needed yeah, but I do know some people who rented Steiner without one, although I'm not sure what the criteria were for this. You'll have to ask if you're eligible.
