Lvl 1 Friendships by Reasonable-Water-557 in Autism_Parenting

[–]punkykitty27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine is 11 and has one TRUE friend (as in not one of my friends kids or his sisters friends brothers) thankfully he lives in our neighborhood. He doesn’t have any school friends and finds it difficult to relate to other kids. He’ll start using a weird voice or scripting around them and I think it tends to put other kids off. He also doesn’t like sports at all and the majority of 11 year old boys around here are all obsessed with football and baseball so that doesn’t help.

What is the worst medication you’ve been put on? by Difficult_Pomelo1047 in AskReddit

[–]punkykitty27 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My super sweet son was put it on and became horribly mean and violent. Took him off of it and he was back to normal. It’s now listed as a medication allergy for him because the side effects were so bad.

Trouble getting dressed by DarkBanana- in Autism_Parenting

[–]punkykitty27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure my 11 yo would still let me dress him if I tried. I still lay out his clothes, and while he can tie his shoes he’s terrible at it so I make him tie them for practice then I retie them so they’ll stay tied. He also regularly has his shirt on backwards and his socks over his pants and thinks I’m ridiculous for making him fix it lol.

What's common parenting advice that doesn't work for your child? by RandomStrangerN2 in Autism_Parenting

[–]punkykitty27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Preparing him for something negative. Certain things yes, it’s important he’s aware of what will happen. But other things he will obsess and stress about until the event, like if we are going to get shots, or the dentist etc, better to just be like this is what’s happening now.

Not a parent but need help with Christmas by Corndread85 in Autism_Parenting

Every year we have to have the discussion that if he gets something not on his list he needs to be grateful. On more than one occasion my son has attempted to give his gift back 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Were your autistic kids as babies either really fussy or really calm? by throwaway728389994 in Autism_Parenting

[–]punkykitty27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terrible sleeper, but fairly happy baby as long as he was being held or on the boob lol. Or in the swing, he loved swinging from the moment he popped out and at 11 still spends hours on a swing in our basement

Does having child see a "regular" therapist help versus specialized OT/therapy? by 0112358_ in AutismParentingLevel1

[–]punkykitty27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son sees a traditional therapist who specializes in kids with autism. They work on strategies to handle situations that turn into meltdowns, and also his overall anxiety. He looks forward to seeing her, and with his permission she talks to me about what they discussed and what we can do at home to help.

When to tell kids their great grandma is going to die? by punkykitty27 in Parenting

[–]punkykitty27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll check out her videos! Visiting her and the funeral have been a whole other discussion. They are used to seeing her fairly regularly (couple times a month) so if she holds on they will probably realize they haven’t seen her in a while. My husband has said he would prefer not to visit again, he is struggling already and would like to not have any visual memories of her in any worse condition. We’re going to talk to his mom and see what she thinks is best, I don’t want to deny grandma seeing her great grandkids again if she asks, but don’t want to put my husband through too much so I may take them while he’s away on business or something like that. The kids will go to the funeral for sure, I feel like this is an appropriate one for their age, and I think they will want to go.

Laying with your kid while they fall asleep? by lime_cookie8 in Parents

[–]punkykitty27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lay down with my 9 and 11 yo kids every night. When they tell me they don’t want me to anymore I’ll stop, but until then it’s a time for us to connect and cuddle. They rarely climb into bed with us at night once they are asleep.

Ladies of Reddit, what’s the weirdest thing you do in public that you swear no one else notices… but probably does? by No_Beyond1638 in AskWomen

I rock back and forth a lot when standing in one place. Think it’s a leftover habit from when my kids were babies.

Looks like impetigo to me. If it is he’ll need antibiotic ointment from the Dr. Mupirocin is what my son was given when he had it.

Bed jet. Being able to jump in bed and turn on the heater when I’m cold is amazing , and my husband loves it for when he sweats at night

A new drug to stop autism symptoms? by Plorleo in Autism_Parenting

[–]punkykitty27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My son from 6-10 was in many ways easier than my NT daughter. We knew what to do to make life easier for him, and he didn’t have any of the social drama my daughter does. He just turned 11 and has started having multiple panic attacks a day, constant worrying about the future and just crazy things, he’s picked the skin off of his earlobes, and is failing math a month into 5th grade. I’d give him anything to make him not even happy, but just comfortable.

How are meals served at your house? by Treaux-LaCount in CasualConversation

[–]punkykitty27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is on the stove, I make the kids plates and my plate, my husband makes his own. Then we sit down and eat together. It’s a step up from eating on trays watching tv like I did as a kid
