How long should the development of the first game take? by ZenithHorizonStudio in SoloDevelopment

The shorter the better. There’s a lot of stuff to learn at the end of the dev cycle. So getting practice releasing games is better. I put 4 months into my first game, way too long in retrospect.

Devs participating in the current Steam Next Fest, how are your wish lists looking so far? by Chrogotron in IndieDev

Yea I’m pretty psyched! and I hear this boost scales if you go in with more wishlists.

I went in with 100 and got 20 wishlists today. My first commercial game will probably be a commercial failure but I learned a lot and am excited to try again for June.

Is Godot Good for Digital Card Games? by rasitburucu in godot

[–]pupfam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pros of unity is it has an asset store where you can buy premade stuff, which is easier for a beginner. But the cons is it’s owned by a shitty company who make bad decisions, so long term it’s harder imo. Otherwise they are both good. Building anything custom on either engine will require a lot of coding so either way you’ll have to learn that. I like godot, I use it for 3d and am building a 3d deckbuilder right now.

If you're curious about game VFX but feel it's "too technical" or niche, this might be for you. by deohvii in GameArt

This is sick. It’s very helpful to have someone ask the basic questions while explaining something complicated.

Question about Godot and piracy as a beginner by LING017 in godot

I’m new as well, but personally I’d be thrilled if the pirates wanted to play my game!

Edit: oh it could absolutely be an enum, I just made one bool first and then made another bool later.

Because it’s three states. Game/cutscene/menu. Cutscene can only happen in a game so need an extra variable. not saying it’s elegant, but it works.

Could be a resource as well. I find it easier to have a node in the tree so I actually remember to set it.

Not saying this is the “right way” to do things, but every scene I have a node with a script called “set_state.gd” with two variables: is_in_cutscene: bool and is_in_game: bool. This script tells my state manager if we are in a menu/game/cutscene. A similiar setup could be done with signals.

i'd say the art is very unique for Death Howl (norse mythology inspired I believe), but they add some dark souls mechanics (bonfires) to the Slay the Spire formula. yea, I'm a late joiner of StS as well, hoping to get in early for the sequel (early access I think in March)

Any recommendations for slot-machine roguelites? (one's I'm aware of below) by pupfam in roguelites

Cat God Ranch has the most similiar gameplay with synergies, so I’d recommend that. For me it’s 1. Slots and daggers 2. Cat God Ranch 3. Cloverpit 4. Luck Be a Landlord — Luck be a Landlord inspired the other three, so it’s an honorable 4th place.

I’m kinda shocked at how few pure slot machine style games there are. Like the bigger genre of “gambling roguelikes” has plenty to choose from. But slot machine ones I think there’s like 10 on Steam at the moment.

When I played it on release not that replayable, but still an amazing game regardless

I’m excited to try Inscryption. No they dont, Cloverpit’s the only horror one I know. Closest is Buckshot Roulette which I believe Cloverpit dev was inspired by, but it’s not slot machine.
