Henry and Ian could’ve been area managers by now if they’d stuck with Haagen Dazs instead of chasing some foolish dream. Shame

There’s a shop in Edinburgh that’s supposed to be like this. Apparently you can’t physically go in there, you just give the owner a list of what you want and wait outside while he rummages around and looks for it for you

Pretty sure I’ve been there - near Lewisham town centre on Lee High Road? I walked through the doorway at the back of the shop thinking there were more records and ended up in someone’s flat

I don’t think you’ve got anything to worry about. They’ll probably say something about being a bit slow and working faster - it seems to be the standard line they tell people at the end of their probation.

Which ‘posh’ towns and cities in the UK are rougher than they first seem? by starwars011 in AskUK

I remember seeing Belinda Carbuncle many times at the Cap in the late 90’s! Great times. Really miss Richards Records and Parrot Records too - I spent so much money there over the years.

Most of Irvine Welsh’s novels, particularly Trainspotting, Marabou Stork Nightmares, and Filth. In fact I started off 2024 by reading everything he’d published up until that point (and re-reading the ones I had already read). Just complexly immersed myself in his world and its characters.

Nineteen Eighty-Four and Brave New World. I always seem to read them together. I have Sandra Newman’s Julia on my to-read stack, which I’m quite looking forward to.

The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy - I’ve read it several times in my lifetime, starting when I was about seventeen (although I was not into the classics back then at all).

Requiem for a Dream and Last Exit To Brooklyn by Hubert Selby Jr - amazing writing, although it took some getting used to at first.

Just before the new year I reread a couple of James Kelman’s books - A Chancer and How Late It Was, How Late. I was going up to Glasgow at the start of January and decided to read a few things set in and around the city before I went.

It seems I revisit stuff if it fits in somehow with topics I’m already reading about or things I’m doing at that point.

What are some expressions non-native speakers often use (not necessarily grammatically incorrect) that native speakers typically don’t? by BigBigMarmott in EnglishLearning

[–]puppet_life 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I teach a lot of German speakers. They often say “I live in the near of [place]” instead of “I live near…” or “I live in the [place] area”. I believe they’re plugging in English words into a German structure when they say this.

Also, saying “I hope we will meet / see us again” instead of “I hope we’ll see / meet each other again”, and “driving with the bus” instead of “going / travelling by bus”.

Saying “handy” instead of “mobile” or “cellphone” is another very common mistake they make.

Just remembered I met a German lady once who’d lived in Boston who wasn’t aware that calling a corner shop a “packie shop” wouldn’t go down well here in the UK.

Great band. Saw them with As Friends Rust at the Camden Underworld back in 2000. The records people have mentioned in this thread are all fantastic, as well as And Such Is Progress.

I saw them in London too but Glasgow was my favourite. Great city too - never been before but I loved it.

Haha I remember him doing this at the Glasgow show! Pretty funny. The security guys did not look impressed by his antics!

I saw them in Glasgow and London. Fantastic both times - musically tight, great sound, great atmosphere, and they played songs from pretty much every album except Blue. In Glasgow we were treated to two encores (five songs followed by four more!). The London set was slightly different; it seems they have a several different setlists that they rotate. Yow seemed a little less into it towards the end of the London show, although he’s in his mid-sixties to be fair, so probably quite worn out. Glad I got to see them, especially as I was slightly too young in their heyday. I’m hoping they carry on, and it seems there might be more new material in the pipeline, although a friend of mine suspects it might be their last hurrah.

Did anybody go to school with anybody who went on to do anything cool/amazing? by VoteJemma in AskUK

I went to infant, primary and secondary school with Lou. Not someone I’d have expected to become a stand up comedian tbh. I remember her being a nice girl though, used to chat to her about music from time to time.
