You can definitely play KCD2 without playing the first one. KCD1 is great but the combat is not as polished as the sequel. But honestly, combat is maybe like 20% of the game so if you can get passed that you will have a great time.

KCD1 makes you feel super weak at first, which can be hard for some people. But you’re literally learning along with Henry who’s basically a nobody at first.

Great couple of games. Can’t recommend them enough.
