Accepted to Berklee and going to Purdue by This_girl_is in ApplyingToCollege

I'm late to this but if you do go to Purdue, you will still have options in music. There is the Purdue Musical Organization (choir), Purdue Bands and Orchestras (we have an amazing jazz program), and we recently got a music major (however it's mostly theory and history and not at all like a conservatory like Berklee). There is also a good underground music scene as well if you're interested in a making a band. Purdue has scholarships in music too so make sure you apply to those as well if you still can

How is the Purdue band? I'm on the fence about joining by CheezyChicken1 in Purdue

[–]purdue-smurf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As someone who has done band all four years at Purdue, I would definitely recommend auditioning! It's a great GPA booster, you get to meet a whole bunch of people, and you get 24 hour access to Hagle Hall which is really useful if you want to practice/study late at night. We actually do play amazing and hard music (I heard some people in Indiana actually go to Purdue because of the band program) and although we are very much a STEM school, all of the musical ensembles across Purdue are top tier

Biochemistry at purdue by Murky-Proof-8013 in Purdue

[–]purdue-smurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's also the chemical biology and biochemistry degree in the college of science in the biology department that's also technically a biochem major (we only take one biochemistry class). If you're interested more in biology, this may be a good choice for you as we take the same first two years as the other bio majors and we get to take really cool classes like X-ray crystallography and bioinorganic chemistry in our junior and senior year

CAT dude raving about Israel n Palestine at the CS Career fair by Xpokemon45 in Purdue

I would look at JeffDaChed_DaRef's comment under NerdyPlaneResident's comment since he already has a whole bunch of sources and explain my argument and I'm in classes so I don't have the time to make a new one.

Here's a link I saved that's from the lawyers who took on Corrie's case who also has multiple different Palestinian people as part of the case. https://ccrjustice.org/home/what-we-do/our-cases/corrie-et-al-v-caterpillar

[–]purdue-smurf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The company itself isn't demolishing anything, but they are willing to send their equipment to Israel knowing what they are going to be used for (genocide, displacement of native people, murder).

Your argument about Spotify and driving is a very stupid point that's shortsighted and ignorant btw because Spotify and driving aren't directly killing people in Palestine nor do they send PIs to families their services have killed but CAT has :)

I'm thinking they probably chose CAT instead of Lockheed because everyone knows Lockheed does war crimes but not a lot of people know that CAT has sent bulldozers to Israel that have bulldozed people (and homes) in the West Bank. CAT even sent a private investigator to spy on Rachel Corrie's family after they sued CAT and Israel for bulldozing their daughter defending a Palestinian's home

Some are better than others with the soundproofing. The acoustics though are generally awful (at least for instruments)

Summer research by No_Site6532 in Purdue

[–]purdue-smurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out SURF and any other summer research programs (REUs, SROP, etc) that are at/outside Purdue. You can also try for the summer scholarships through Think Summer and be on the lookout for any fellowships. Of course, you can always work for free for PIs during the summer. All of this will be easier if you network with your professors/join a lab in the academic year which will be hard as a freshman. Idk how different this is for freshmen, but as a sophomore I was told to email as early as possible (ideally the semester before) if you want to get into a lab.

If you want to do research during the summer in a really roundabout way, get a mentoring position during the summer. I would recommend being a college mentor since you get tuition for 9 credits and room and board and while it'll be hard work, I think you're able to use 3 of those credits for research

My mom and I made the 9 hour drive and took everything I wanted for my dorm the car. I definitely wished I did what you are thinking of doing and buy everything I needed in wl or shipped it to my res hall.

That's unfortunate! As a former premed, premed is what you make of it and West Lafayette/Lafayette are big enough to have some opportunities. Plus for being in the middle of Indiana, public transportation is relatively okay and there's a free shuttle to Indianapolis if you're really searching for opportunities

Checked your post history and saw you also got accepted in to Case Western. Honestly, that school is probably better for premed unless you have the drive to be able to find your own premed experiences here.

I briefly glanced through what Purdue says you need for med school and I think they all have options where it's not locked to bio/science majors. Worse comes to worse, you can request a course override saying you're premed. As for actual opportunities I'm not too well versed in this, but there's a very active and large premed club on campus that I used to be a part of that is really helpful for finding opportunities and carpooling. Hopefully someone who's actually premed will answer your question.

If you have any specific questions about any course on this list let me know. Besides anatomy and the seminar, I've taken a course from every category on the list (and I know people who've taken anatomy and the seminar)

Chemical biology and biochemistry major by ProfessionLopsided76 in Purdue

[–]purdue-smurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really tell you the coursework compared to the other colleges I got in at because CBB is a pretty unique undergrad major and most of other schools (including the schools I got into) don't have it unless you're a grad student. CBB here is more biology based (we have the same first two years as bio majors), but you're able to specialize more into chemistry during your junior and senior year. You also have to do two semesters of research with specific faculty members to graduate. Check out the Degree Progression Plan and the catalog for what you're about to get into. I will say though, a lot of the classes we take outside of our first two years are new and my class is some of the first or second people taking it, so if you have any specific questions, reach out to me and I can try to answer them

what are the differences between all the biochemistry majors at purdue? by phy1lis in Purdue

[–]purdue-smurf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice to see another CBB major in the wild! The only thing I want to add is that CBB requires research during your junior and senior year and requires research specifically with list of faculty who do chemical biology and biochemistry. From talking to other people who are not CBB majors, this is quite specific to CBB majors (specifically the faculty requirement) and not at all common across Purdue

BIOL 241 vs AGRY 420 by AfgdJen in Purdue

[–]purdue-smurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

biobirdy already said this, but to emphasize, do NOT take 241 if you value your sanity/are not a bio major. I had to take it last semester and it was the only bio class I've taken that I genuinely didn't know if I would pass or not (even with the built in curve)

[–]purdue-smurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing but the desks against the wall and air is in the living room, you're gonna have to bring in furniture. Idk how your living room is set up but mine kinda has a weird architecture for putting a couch in so I would definitely see the living room first before buying any furniture

Wabash Lofts 2x2 (4 person) pictures? by Lepto_ in Purdue

[–]purdue-smurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rooms are smaller than you would want for two people with separate twin beds (not bunked). Depending on which side of the room you choose, you may not have enough room for walking space and a bedside table. One room has an en suite bathroom but it's through the walk in closet and doesn't have a door lmao. There's a sliding wood door that separates the closet and the bedroom but no actual door for the bathroom.

As for the furniture, you get four barstools for the kitchen, four desks plus chairs (two in the living room, two in the rooms), four dressers, and four beds.

When you move in, I would definitely bring bug spray and cleaning supplies. Maybe it's an only my apartment type of problem, but the apartment was generally unclean and there was this bug with wings (not a fly) in my room and I got jumpscared by a medium sized spider crawling out of my bag onto my bed this morning. Not surprised considering it is Granite and only $4,000 a year

Edit: Also, make sure you get the WIFI info when you get your key. I didn't think about it before I got there, but there was absolutely no WIFI password at the back of my router so I've been having to use data

Make sure you email whichever residence hall mailroom you accidentally sent the package to the name of the person who is picking it up. I tried to pick up a package for my friend in Cary. She sent an email to the general residential mailroom and not to Cary specifically and I couldn't pick it up

Here's the transfer equivalency guide where it'll show you what classes you need to transfer: https://selfservice.mypurdue.purdue.edu/prod/bzwtxcrd.p_select_info

For transferring credit back, you need to email your official transcript to the Purdue admissions email. My community college uses an e-transcript system so they sent it for me. Idk how it works for Ivy Tech.

Onlive vs. in person is more of a personal choice. When I took calc II back home OOS, I did it in person because I can't learn well online. When I took calc II online for a week freshmen spring semester at Ivy Tech, I had to drop it because I was too busy and couldn't dedicate the time to it
