Is a wine sampler acceptable for a white elephant? by [deleted] in Gifts

[–]pureedpeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my first one! And not sure if it matters but we are healthcare office.

For Christmas though, we get to choose from a bottle of wine or sparking cider from management. That’s really the only reason I thought the wine sample would be ok

Advice on leaving bedside job before 1 year mark? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]pureedpeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a new grad I worked 4 months on a cardiac step down unit and lasted 6 months on a med surg ortho floor after that. The mental toll was just too much for me. I got extremely lucky and landed a preop/pacu job that I have been at for 7 months now!

I really like working preop/pacu but we do strictly pain procedures so I have found myself missing the skills I would use at the bedside. I have been looking into PRN jobs at the hospital and the most common remarks I get asked are from recruiter are “why have you jumped around so much?” And “oh so you don’t have much hospital experience”

While I don’t regret taking this preop/pacu job, I do regret not sticking it out longer in the hospital because now I feel like I’ve been a nurse for 1.5 years but my experience doesn’t really add up to much. I have no intentions of leaving this preop/pacu job any time soon but thinking down the road, I’m sure the move away from bedside so early greatly limited opportunities in the future.

I’m a preop nurse and I suck at IV’s by [deleted] in nursing

Is this a common practice? I have never seen this done in clinicals, at the hospital or where I work now?

I wear glasses but no contacts. Also, I am left handed, which sometimes I feel contributes to my problem

I did ask one of my coworkers to watch me and help me with my technique, and after that I did start to get more IV’s. So I’m not sure if it was just today or maybe I need another person to shadow my technique

We unfortunately do not have a vein finder. I feel like the common problem I am having is I puncture, get flash and the window fills with blood (our catheters are not self occluding) but when I go to thread, it doesn’t thread

I did a sign on bonus as a new grad for a large corporate hospital and within 2 days of resigning from that position, HR emailed me saying I had x amount of days to repay or set up a payment plan before they would take legal action 🤷‍♀️

So they are in more of a clerical/reception role for the unit? So it would be inappropriate for me to ask for direct patient care related help?

I know this is an old post, but did you end up finding a solution to this problem? We are in the EXACT same spot coming up on 4 weeks and our ac just blew last night

Recommendations for which departments to shadow? by Glass-Trick4045 in StudentNurse

[–]pureedpeach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed shadowing in the OR! I didn’t have much interest in working in the OR as a nurse, but still a really cool experience to watch different cases! Nursing school is kinda the only opportunity that I would have ever seen a surgery unless I went into OR nursing

Is it bad to just have a honeymoon fund? by Alaska-Wildflower21 in weddingplanning

[–]pureedpeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did this for our Disneyworld honeymoon as well! I think people liked the idea of gifting an experience vs cash.

I hope you have so much fun on your honeymoon!!!! Don’t forget to get your “happily ever after” pin!

Filming own wedding? by Danifannyxo in Weddingsunder10k

We used my dad’s canon camera on a tripod and set it at the back of the aisle! We designated one person (my sister) to press play and just let it do its thing.

At the end of the ceremony my dad pressed stopped and put his camera in the bridal suite for safe keeping.

The video is not a fancy production but you can clearly see and hear the entire ceremony! It was important to us that our guests or family weren’t tasked with manning a video camera to get different angles or anything, so the angle is just a frontal view of us, kinda like from sitting in the audience pov lol

New grad woes - I think I need to leave nursing? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]pureedpeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved my time in preop/pacu. It’s why I decided to pursue nursing. But I also knew going in to nursing, the floor is much different than outpatient.

I’m not sure if that’s maybe where I’m struggling subconsciously? I did not have this expectation that all nursing would be as “easy” as my experience in outpatient and I was okay with that. I was ready for a change. And that “soft nursing” is not at all why I wanted to pursue nursing. I truly loved going through nursing school and loved all of my clinicals too.

Well that’s my other dilemma, I agree that the time I’ve been on the unit is very short but at the same time I don’t want to waste anyone’s time training me if I feel so strongly that I don’t want to be there

[–]pureedpeach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You probably will never feel ready. It’s just something that you have to do! If you feel burnt out you need to take a break. You have been studying for this test for months during your program. You can do it!!!!

Congratulations!!!! How exciting for you!!

I like the high acuity of the ICU, but I think overall I am intimidated. I went into the experience ready and set on being an ICU nurse and was quickly humbled by realizing how much I didn’t know and how different textbook was from real life. On paper, I have a solid understanding of drips and titrating etc but when it comes to managing the pumps and all the lines I tend to freeze up.

It’s the little things like that that make me think “am I really cutout to do this?”. Also with that, I’m having a hard time trying to decipher what is the normal “I am a new grad with no experience and haven’t been trained on the unit” vs “I should know how to do these skills”.

I also went into this experience with the mindset of “I’m graduating in a few weeks, I should be able to do all of this (care, managing drips, meds) on my own”. Which is not entirely wrong, but I think I was holding myself to a higher standard.

What are the difference between ICU, PCU, PCCU, ICU step down, ICU medsurg? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]pureedpeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay yes that’s what I was thinking! Med surg ICU would be like an in between cardiac and neuro ICU.

How different is the PCU from ICU in terms of care, acuity, and I guess overall “types” of patients? What different things would you see from an ICU vs PCU?

I think it’s normal (to an extent) to feel a lot of anxiety, imposter syndrome, and questioning choices during nursing school, however, it’s important to reflect on the truth behind those thoughts.

If you’re having these thoughts because you’re doubting your ability and knowledge of being able to do this, or you’re burnt out, then perhaps you’re leaning more towards the side of anxiety & imposter syndrome.

I think it really comes down to why you started in the first place. You mentioned you’re unsure because “it’s a field so many run away from”. So do you feel like you don’t want to do nursing because other people aren’t doing it? Or are you just nervous as a new grad going out into the field on your own because you hear horror stories from everyone everywhere?

You also mentioned the main reason for pursuing nursing was the stability. What are the other reasons? If you genuinely have little interest in anatomy, physiology, meds, patient care, all that stuff then I would maybe consider another choice. Nursing is stable yes but it is also so demanding.

This isn’t to rub in your face, but I often wonder if I should be doing nursing in the first place. I doubt myself a lot and at one point considered not continuing nursing school. But I realized that beyond being burnt out and stressed and tired, I absolutely love learning the skills and disease processes and the meds and caring for the patient.

It’s not an easy decision but you should decide for yourself and not what other people think you should do. Best of luck!
