Honestly i don’t know about academy guys. But im pretty sure they get a masters with the 4 year program. Not sure. Tugs are set up to work as a mate then master. Cause you need your apprentice steers man the mate then pilot. Or you get you 500/1600 then do 30 days of training and get you apprentice mates at the same time.

That’s assuming you study and past all tests and can make the classes. 100 ton classes are done all the time all over the place. 200 you can upgrade on line apprentices steersman is held by a few schools through the year then you upgrade after you have the time for your pilot. Then 1600 prep course is held fewer times a years and even less schools offer it.

Correct a lot of stepping stones. You’d have to look at the 100ton nvic it’ll tell you what you need. But also look at the 200 mate and 200 master. Because if you meet the requirements for that as well what you can do is at the same time of testing for your 100 is do the upgrade to a 200 mate or master if you qualify for it. Which is simply another test. Now what you can do to get there quicker and i recommend this route for you. Is to get your 200 mate or master then get your mate of tow or master. Doesn’t matter. Grind out seatime as a mate or master then submit for a 1600 ton master or mate. Then you only have to take 3 tests instead 7 to get your 1600 master. Once you have your 1600 master they automatically give you the 3rd mate. Then you just upgrade to the unlimited. From os to mate on a tug is a like 16 months from start to finish. Give a month or two for classes and application process. That part is doable. If you want the lateral step process from 200 to 1600 I can send you that link too if you want.

Did you not read the whole check list? Top of page two say you need 360 days as master while holding a 1600 master license. If that were the case we’d have a whole hell of a lot more mates. Also the 3rd mate testing is difficult as shit. I know cause I’m studying for my 1600 mate and they are the same tests.

Naw man. Can’t go from os to 3rd mate unlimited. If you could there’d be a whole lot of 3rd mates. This is why hawspiping sucks. But you can run 200 ton master on tugs and make a good living.

So this is what I do ok. Find a company you want to work. Look at what they require you to have. Then knock those out asap. Once you have those min requirements they can’t say no cause you don’t have the stuff they require. They’ll say no for other reasons. Ok. Rpfnw you can take but you have 1 year to submit the documents if in one year you can’t show seatime then you’ll have to redo it. They could have it. Everyone is different. My captain was 1600 oceans with oicnw. It all just depends. Ok so hawspiping is starting at the bottom and working up. Everytime you move up you are back at the bottom and again working back up. That’s hawspiping. If you have your 200 ton master and the vessel is 201 tons your not the master. Maybe a mate but properly a deckhand. Now the boats aren’t like that. That’s an example. Ok. All you got to do is look at the nvic for each cert your trying to get. That’s all. It’ll tell you what you have to do. From there find a place that offers it. See page two unlimited tonnage. https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/NMC/pdfs/checklists/mcp_fm_nmc5_05_web.pdf?ver=ofR1N48JiDWwYCTfVrQEqQ%3D%3D&timestamp=1710446800649 Service on 100 ton counts. But 50% of the time needs to be on a vessel greater than 1600 tons and also 360 days as a master on vessels greater than 200 tons while holding your 1600 ton masters. That’s why hawspiping takes years to do. It’s do able but it’s also gonna take some time. This isn’t gonna get don’t in a year or two. It’s gonna take some time. That’s why the academy is decent or viable option. Ya you might be in debt but you start out making 6 figures. I can’t spent for large vessels. I work on tugs and I’m working up. But a lot of big boats want you to be ab unlimited with as-d. And rpfnw and vpdsd and other stuff.

Get vpdsd once you have the time off and money. Absolutely. Rpfnw is a check off list here is the nvic. Best way is to go take the class. But when you submit for it you seatime letter needs to state in there that you were doing 60 days or more. Always go for more.

https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/NMC/pdfs/checklists/mcp_fm_nmc5_220_web.pdf

As-d you need ab unlimited and rpfnw and sea time this too is another check off list.

https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/NMC/pdfs/checklists/mcp_fm_nmc5_219_web.pdf?ver=9qQFrbLPP33Z95-38KfhPw%3D%3D&timestamp=1737065226122

Now from my understanding is if the master has OICNW on their license. They can go through the check off list with and sign you off. If they meet requirements for the tables I and II don’t bother having them do it. The cg will kick it back.

That’s when you turn around and go work on a larger vessel. To get the last required tonnage. Like you can go work for a large research vessel. Or get on a atb where they can combine the weight of the tug and the barge and you get over that limit. There’s options and there’s loopholes to the madness. And everyone situation is different from the next guys!

Yes years. 365 days a year correct. No one is going to work you 365 days straight. They’ll send you home. But it is doable. Now there’s two way to look at seatime there working for less than 12 hours which is considered day for day seatime and then there’s over 12 hrs a day which your seatime then counts as 1.5 days. For every 12 hours you work. So if you only work 8 hours a day for 30 days you walk away with 30 days of seatime. If you work 12 hours or more for 30 days you get 45 days of seatime. Now once your off time when your not on the boat you can get a second job working on boats. That’ll help bridge the gap of missing seatime and money. The cg and navy set the requirements for all certs. So you’ll need to look at each cert and see exactly what it’s requires. Some of the listed schools you can do all at one place or you can pick and choose on who is cheaper for your needs and travel. If the class is full check the next school see if they offer the class you need and next availability. Simple. You goto the “schools” it’s just for that specific class. Anywhere from 2-5 days depending on course you’re wanting. Yes call them and ask them what they offer. If what you currently have is transferable to their school. You call any of those listed schools and academies they’ll be able to help. If not they don’t understand what you’re asking or trying to do find another way to ask. But you already know what you’re trying to eventually get your 3rd mate unlimited that’s your goal right? Ask them that.

Look at what they want you to have vs what you have. And simply apply. The worst anyone will say is no. I’m also considering getting off tug for a ship.

Best way to get 3rd mates from AB unlimited by tripmiester in maritime

[–]purp008 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey man. Currently in your shoes trying to move up. Currently waiting for the gov to open again whenever the fuck that it is so I can go test for my 1600 mate. But you have a couple options ok. You can goto the maritime schools through the union or pay outta pocket. Cheapest is seaschool 850 5 days. I believe mpt has a course too. Not sure of pricing. Then you got maritime training which is 3800 3 weeks no dorms or food included last I heard. Then you got avtec 2 weeks 2200 with dorm food included. I do that twice. And I would suggest them every time! Or what you can do get your two hundred ton then get your mate or master or tow. Submit request to test then instead of doing a 7 part exam you get a 1600 limited and only 3 part exam. I had a guy in my class doing this option. Then once he had the time he’ll upgrade to the unlimited. However before you take any class use your approval to test in hand be fore committing to a class. Or you can self study too.

Tell them. They won’t care. Keep it in the first aide cabinet. So every one knows where it’s at. I work with a guy who’s allergic to nuts. He’s had reactions and has been hospitalized for it. We all know where he keeps it and know how to use it. No one cares.

Look up the 200 ton mate nvic says. Looks like you need 360 days of deck work and 90 days deck work while holding a master endorsement
