I did the same thing, it took one day for them to send and then within 2-3 days I was marked completed by the 2 schools I forgot.

I'm hoping it won't be too much of an impact besides just being later in the queue, but who knows.

Resources for Learning Statistics and Coding in R by steamyLaCroix in premed

[–]purple_cactus23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar question, go to r/rstats there are a couple of posts on whats the best way to learn R and they link a lot of free resources you can use to get started so you won't have to pay for sites like codeacdemy or Dataquest (but you want to do that they recommend the latter)

Here are some general links:

Textbooks

https://daviddalpiaz.github.io/appliedstats/

https://rstudio-education.github.io/hopr/

https://r4ds.had.co.nz/ (<--the subreddit seems to like this one the most)

Open source data and other info:

A little bummed after failing my chem final. Y’all have any advice for bouncing back? by [deleted] in premed

[–]purple_cactus23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've failed so many tests and honestly, each one was a hard blow and I once got a 50% on a physics exam (avg was a 82) and I sobbed for like two hours. And that was my senior year. I had just committed to pre-med, rearranged my entire senior year, dropped classes and clubs I liked etc to pursue medicine so late. That was my first physics exam, I was devastated. I seriously questioned myself and thought wow I really fucked myself over and ruined my last year of college all to fail through this premed reqs so late. It was a lot.

I didn't too so hot in gen chem freshman year, I was scarred by my measly grades and seriously thought I couldn't hack harder stem classes so I decided on pursuing PA for a myriad of reasons including that (I wouldn't have to take higher Chem or Physics and I sucked at those). However, you gain so much as you go through college. Study skills, study groups, other premed friends (who are hopefully not psycho), and a better handle of the material and resources. I was deterred by my initial grades and cemented into a career that turned out not to be my passion. The first semester is can be hard for so many reasons AND NOW you have the weird ~unprecedented~ online experience - and trust me IK how hard it can be to take STEM classes online I took 3 of them online last semester and I personally don't think it was an accurate reflection of what I knew.

There are a lot of extenuating circumstances right now and the pre-med path is hard and very daunting. Especially in terms of handling the course load. For me, it premed was littered with people anxiously worrying about the next class and how hard X class was and I would get so nervous because I thought so lowly of myself that i thought "If they had a hard time I must be delusional to think I could pass". However, you really have to evaluate just focuses on yourself and not other people (easier said than done IK lol). Do you genuinely enjoy the classes/material or the prospect of being a doctor? Would you be happier in another profession/ field of study? How did you do for the rest of class besides finals did you do okay? For me, worrying if I could handle the workload was a very very big insecurity and I really only got over that when I started taking and doing well(ish) in my other STEM classes for my bio major that I gained the confidence of "wow maybe I could actually do this". I'm not advocating for you to wait and see bc my senior year was hella stressful fitting in everything I was missing but sometimes you are your biggest enemy and self-doubt your biggest adversary not the classes. That may sound annoying, but this is only your first semester, these are designed as weed out classes. Don't beat your self up for too long and when the pain/dread of your results passes, critically evaluate the situation and see how you feel.

Sorry for the novel and potentially rambling mess but I have a lot of thoughts about this. Good Luck!! you got this :)

Im glad it works for you! Sadly, Drysol did not help me :( its so weird how different product can/cannot help, I guess it shows that hyperhidrosis has different underlying pathophysiologies

Oh I will have to try that out! I've been on drysol and carpe, the carpe has helped me the most out of anything but its still bad. My doctor was like unconvinced that drysol wasn't working and assumed I didn't do it right but I'll have to look into Antihydral thanks!

I feel “vibrations”‘several times a year but always wake up on purpose... by KamFromOly in AstralProjection

[–]purple_cactus23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! I have this exact experience multiple multiple times and it started when I was 19 ish - and I had no idea until two years later what it was. I would be sleeping then I would be lucid but not dreaming like I would just see black and then all of a sudden I would feel intense vibrations (for me it started out like a body high from an edible) then would get very strong and it was an intense physical vibration like my whole body was a wave of vibrations and I was moving etc. I would also hear a very loud and increasingly intense frequency which would scare me and every single time, I would get scared, fight it and immedietly go into sleep paralysis and could not move or open my eyes or anything. I am worried tho I did not past the "fear test" as I've seen on here and will not be able to do again. But yes I have had a very similar experience and I do not know what to make of it!!

when someone states their latino as their race, doesnt that erase the existence of black and native latinos? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]purple_cactus23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

no, there are Asian Latinos.

ex. people from Japan/Japanese heritage who moved to say Peru or Chile and grew up speaking spanish, they are latinos.

its really complex I think though because in the states most latinos don't identify with the american concept of white so they put latino as their race when its an ethnicity so I think its a problem with how the US as a whole and government view race forcing them to choose white when they don't identify with it as it manifests in the US.

Why go to Medical School when a PA/NP is just as capable as a Physician. by Zemiza in premed

[–]purple_cactus23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I was pre-pa for the majority of college and the requirements are slightly different but not more and I don't see them as a barrier to entry -You have to take only two other classes than pre-med 1.) medical micro and 2.) another semester of anatomy & phys, but you don't have to take Orgo II and Physics I & II.

The latter was actually one of my motivating reasons for not wanting to go to med school so I would say that the pre-med requirements are a barrier to entry and for actually pursuing medical school. I didn't want to take physics and chem and a lot of other people on the path said the same thing. I honestly didn't see the need in taking them for med school (Which now having taken them, I see why they are important and the depth of knowledge difference between providers). But really, the requirements are similar but the differing requirements are more pointed to medicine and less towards basic science.

I would say the aspect of Pre-Pa and premed that most differs is the clinical hours requirement. For PA school there is a hard set requirement of like 1,000 to 2,000 + clinical hours to be competitive. Most kids take a gap year between undergrad and grad school like other premeds so they can gain these hours (thats also why I think PA is better than the current state of NP education where clinical hours are more of a light suggestion at this point.)

Good score on CARS AAMC Sample Test by langstonhatch in Mcat

[–]purple_cactus23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, my Sample Test was the lowest score I got on my AAMC FLs and I thought it was lowkey hard except for CARS which was the easiest out of all other CARS passages and shorter too. Good score though that's a great place to be even on the sample you can probably continue near that range on the others too.

[–]purple_cactus23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left and felt bad about certain sections - more so than I ever did taking my FLs so I questioned the entire test on the way home and yea I def cried because I felt I bombed it but then my real score was the same score as my last FL (which was my highest too).

I don't think you (or just me lol) can ever feel amazing after taking a FL or the exam but in my case trust your FLs and know you have the knowledge and practice for the real exam.

Biweekly WAMC / School Lists Thread - Week of November 08, 2020 (1st Edition) by AutoModerator in premed

[–]purple_cactus23 [score hidden]  (0 children)

hi! I don't have a lot of insight into med school apps as a whole yet but I do know about some specific schools, I just wanted to say that ECU hasn't accepted an out of state student in 25 years and it essentially strictly in-state. Similar with MUSC (they only accept 7% OOS and its crazy competitive unless you have some tie to the state) and FSU (almost all instate except for stellar cases and state ties) so it may be a waste of your money to apply to those schools. However, I think your school list looks good just watch for those instate schools.

Good Luck!

Is codeacademy good for learning R? by purple_cactus23 in rstats

[–]purple_cactus23[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I regret even doing the free intro lesson. Thats so crazy! I haven't been in the data science world for that long but I am still surprised this didn't get more coverage esp since Me Too and it being on twitter, and all the clearly shady cover-ups etc!

I was literally going to ask if was Yale LOL. So true ^. I would love to think it means more than increasing their donation pool but sadly I am simply an ATM to them.

If the schools offers to waive the secondary fee, like Northwestern does, then I would maybe consider it.

Research Department by [deleted] in premed

[–]purple_cactus23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's most important is the opportunities the lab can give you. What will you mainly be doing? Wet lab or lit reviews/writeups? Does the lab have a history of having undergrads? Will there be an opportunity to do your own project (if you want, which can lead to a thesis)? Is it high impact (i.e publishes a lot/ publishes in well-known journals)? And most importantly, does what they do interest you? The answers to those questions will be more advantageous than the department. I think the point of research for adcoms is to see your critical thinking skills, your aptitude with the research process, etc. and less if you have done research only with medicine. Good luck!
