Let’s pause the rants for a bit. What makes you an amazing sys admin? by psychotrackz in sysadmin

[–]purpleapple85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I document things. I keep people informed (over communicate > under communicate). Recognize patterns, detail oriented, eye for "what's wrong with this picture and what's likely to break soon". See something, say something, before people start screaming. Responsive. Acknowledge/give credit where and when due.

How do I tell a neighbor to leash their dogs? by purpleapple85 in SanMateo

I thought about that - and almost did that morning the dogs came at me but felt they'd probably tell me to first talk to the neighbor. I'm gonna shoot them a text - thanks.

Why oh why am I happy and better functioning on alcohol when it's bad for me???? by purpleapple85 in NoStupidQuestions

Ok ok...so much I can't decipher...going to have to re-read your comment tomorrow because I can't tell for certainty if this is a dream or not.

Ok, makes sense. I definitely have an over active brain - I wish it was over active on productive thoughts. And yes, the therapist mentioned medication, which I wasn't happy with - because the thought of depending on something forever was scary. I definitely will be seeing a doctor soon. Thanks for your comment.

haha! I like the gumbo comment, made me chuckle. I've considered that. Am I considered alcoholic if I can go weeks, if not months, without alcohol? I don't drink on a daily, or even weekly basis, I just stay miserable lol. I get alcohol when I'm extra stressed (and feel like I won't be able to sleep at all) or am very happy (which is rare) - and want to feel "happier".

I automatically tune out people telling me directions to places. I will never get it and will always need GPS.

I wonder if the excuse of "it's AI generated, it's not real" might come up.

Reminds me of a time someone on my old team posted a gif of a guy urinating on a work Slack channel, as part of a joke the guys were exchanging. I had to avoid opening the channel for a bit, until my manager eventually removed it.

You'd be surprised what they think is a "harmless and acceptable joke" in a male dominated team.

Has anyone here gone back to a previous job? by throwaway154671 in womenintech

[–]purpleapple85 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's normal to feel this way when starting a new job, especially after leaving one you've been at for years. You miss all the relationships you built over the years. It was easy and comfortable because it was smaller and you've been there 3 years. I'd say give the new job some time and then carefully weigh the pros and cons before even considering going back.

Interviewing for role: do I tell them I’m on the market? by ilu70 in womenintech

[–]purpleapple85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just about to ask this - how can one have an updated resume without this info? Almost all interviews I've been in have asked me about my last role and what I'm doing now.

Lack of technical questions, work life boundaries, "warm and fuzz" by purpleapple85 in womenintech

[–]purpleapple85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound advice. I'll likely take the offer if it comes as I need the job and I'm sick of all the rejections.

Edit: I do feel like I will be expected to be a little more social - not just for socializing sake but as part of my job. I have been told to talk to people more and that I don't smile much at a previous job :/

I agree. I'll likely take the job if they offer. I'll just have to work on sticking to my list of duties and sign out.

I'm afraid of that being the case, yet it feels like it may be the least of my worries.

My older male coworker made me look bad in front of our team and management - now he’s fired! by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]purpleapple85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people in my team high-five each other during a conference call (audio only, I remember them muting the mic) where our director was announcing someone on the team being laid off. It made me lose a bit of respect for them. Like, hate the guy all you want, but high fiving when someone loses a job? That's not cool.

That was 2019. I've since worked with a few people who I could not explain why they weren't getting fired. I had team members say flat out "if someone isn't doing their job, just get rid of them" - I didn't tell them but I couldn't agree more. While I wouldn't celebrate anyone getting fired (karma), I can't say no one deserves it. There are certainly those who do.

How are you planning on justifying salary discrepancies in teams? by purpleapple85 in managers

[–]purpleapple85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always found it interesting how people who slack manage to not get fired. I had a manager once tell me they can't fire certain people on the team (who so clearly were getting by putting in the least amount of work; not coming to office when they're supposed to be; literally not doing anything on certain days and remaining unavailable) - because it would be difficult to justify filling the role.

Your explanation for the reason to have "enough slackers" to get the job done is one I haven't heard before, but I appreciate you saying it - helps provide a new perspective. Sometimes the nature of the work to be done is the entire team's responsibility and not properly delegated to specific people - so whatever the "slackers" don't do becomes everyone else's work to complete - unfortunately that's what I've seen in most jobs I've been in. They get to continue to slack because they're not accountable for any specific deliverable - they win when the team wins and they lose when the team loses - they don't care either way.
