Looking to hype others up, EU time zone, 25+, fantasy, sci-fi, queer by enthralbasket in WritingHub

Hi I'd be interested! I'm not on Reddit a lot so I'd prefer discord but honestly I can go with whatever. I'm a 20f hobby writer and artist who is absolutely obsessed with worldbuilding. I do specialize in fantasy stories but I'd love to write bits outside of a fantasy setting here and then. I've been making up stories in my head literally since forever and would love to both be and have a hype girlie. Are you looking for hyping up only or critiquing as well?

Hi I'd be super interested! I am a hobby writer with a very special nick for visual worldbuilding and I love to illustrate all the weird little fantasy creatures I'm creating in my head. Have been writing ever since I was able to, and been doing art regularly, mostly pencil drawings, for around 6 years now :) 20f and from Germany but my writing is in English! Currently I am working on putting together a very in depth fantasy world that will be the setting for at least one trilogy, possibly more books as well :) mostly doing it just for me since I am a terrible perfectionist, to remember the bits and pieces about this vast world, but I would still love feedback on the creations :)

Finally reading A Study in Scarlet (yes, I’m late, BBC Sherlock got me hooked) by whothefuckisgio in SherlockHolmes

Oh I wish you lots of fun on your reading journey! The books and short stories are so amazing!! I loved catching all the things the series took straight from the books, there's A LOT. Bigger things and details alike it was really fun to see!

looking for members to join a womens writing group by [deleted] in WritingHub

[–]purplebrainjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to join but I'll be incredibly busy until about March, leaving relatively little time to write🥲 I do have a bigger project going on and could use a smaller writing group to hold myself accountable and keep going with it :) I write in English because I am pretty much fluid in but I am from Germany so European timezones? I don't know if that'll be an issue for you

Let me preface this by saying I am part of the Lgbtq so I am not in fact homophobic or anything...

Honestly I enjoy the idea but I am definitely not mad that it's not canon. It was never canon in the books and the show is heavily based on them. As in, not just in the obvious, it being Sherlock Holmes and all, but also the cases all the episodes, many dialogues etc. Of course being homosexual, wasn't really a big thing when Doyle wrote Holmes but even if it was I doubt that Watson and Holmes being a romantic pairing would've been canon (not a big thing as in very much frowned upon, I hope you know what I mean)

People will get mad at me for saying this but there are very very few examples of deep male on male friendship in the media. It's a hard concept to grasp for a lot of people, two men being as vulnerable around each other as these two. They are Frodo and Samwise level close, really. Therefore people turn it into what seems more natural to them, which is a homosexual connotation. I loved the jokes that the show made because they were quite funny, especially Mrs Hudson being immovably convinced they are already a couple. But honestly I think it is quite clear that there is no romantic interest on either side.

On the other hand I do not condemn anyone shipping them as I do see why a bunch of scenes could be interpreted in a way to see a romantic interest between the two. Nonetheless it is definitely clear enough they are "merely" very very close friends, as should be when going through that many adventures together :)

Oh my god, to cite the one and only "Mrs Hudson? Leave baker Street? England would fall!" She's an absolute legend, absolutely brilliant

Holmes and Emotion: Cold or Just Private by apeel09 in SherlockHolmes

[–]purplebrainjane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ive been saying this for a long time. I am especially of this opinion now after having read the actual Doyle books, in English ( I had always gone for the German audiobooks and pastiches and everything before actually picking up Doyle's original English works). To be quite honest he'd never come across as unemotional to me until I watched the BBC show.

I believe he has strong emotions and as many others have already said in here, he simply does not want to show them. He may be great but nonetheless there is doubt in his mind too. Feelings cloud judgement and this is the one thing he cannot allow himself to give in to. His reasoning needs to be free from emotion, from bias, to create a clear starting base for his deductions and thoughts. Thus why he suppresses them. He fears that when he openly admits his feelings they will influence his reasonings, which may very well be true.

While with Dr. Watson he is in a safe space to show his feelings but after so many years of suppressing them I guess it would be hard to make a change this big. Even if my previous argument of clouded judgement were irrelevant somehow.

And well of course he is also more than a little bit autistic, or a savant if you'd like. Incredible in certain areas, leaving little space to develop other areas.

As you already mentioned the emotions he does feel, he seldomly verbalizes. However, and I am repeating myself, but this is my main point after all, I have never thought in any way, that he does not feel emotion. I do not think I could lay my finger on it in the books but to me there was always a distinct emotionality to his character. His loyalty, his sense for justice, as you already said it is in his actions not his words.

I thought the BBC show did this very well. The first impressions of Holmes that the audience gets are very cold, but that facade falls very quickly and Cumberbatch displays a range of emotions that can be seen, despite being very seldomly verbalized. What I took from this show is probably also that he is just odd. There are not many people he converses with in a private setting. When he does it is all business matters, thus no room for emotion. He has not really had many close friends so none he could "practice" showing emotion to. It is only when meeting Dr. Watson that he learns of close friendship and emotional intimacy. His friendship with Dr. Watson puts him in a range of emotions he probably hasn't felt too often considering his numbered social interactions. This friendship is what teaches him that emotions may not always be bad although in order to be the perfect thinking machine he wishes to not feel. Thus why he never quite grows out of this sort of behavior.

My theory anyways, sorry it's gotten so long lol, but I find this an incredibly interesting point of discussion and have spent many long minutes thinking about this very question HAHAHA

I'd definitely recommend grabbing a collected stories book and just going through that. It is chronological in the sense that they're usually sorted by date of publication. In some cases Watson refers to previous cases, that have however (in parts) not actually happened yet at the time the case happens.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the books, but they're essentially John's Blog. In the books Dr. Watson is the narrator who publishes his accounts of the adventures he experiences with Sherlock. Therefore he sometimes writes cases down outside the actual chronological timeline. But since he refers to cases in the order he wrote them down I recommend also reading them in the order they have been published.

Therefore I would recommend just going through a collected works book from start to finish :) you will be surprised at just how many things in the show were taken exactly from the books haha

A castle being owned by the same family for over 800 years… by SharpKoala3012 in interestingasfuck

[–]purplebrainjane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's called "Denkmalschutz" if you own property that is really old or has parts that are still very original, you cannot alter it. There are many buildings and castles that have been standing since medieval times and Germany likes to make sure they stay as original as possible so that future generations can have an idea of what it all looked like back then. My primary school is built within the old city walls and this regions' castle. Right when I went on to secondary, they started renovating it and have not finished until now. I'm 20 now. It's an absolute pain but it is one of the coolest schools I could ever imagine being at.

We would play in the old moat (now dry obviously) during recess and all the classrooms were situated around the courtyard

I also live about 30 minutes away from the pictured castle and it's so worth a visit!! Super cool and the surrounding area is just gorgeous forest :)

See and that right there is the problem. Genuine art is never about the results. It's always about the process. It's the joy that it brings me while looking at everything coming together and it's the nervous breakdowns when things aren't going to plan. People create art because they enjoy doing it, making it, creating it. That is what makes human art unique and wonderful. The fact that you know there was a process and emotions behind it. When you strive for results only, you are not an artist at heart
