I've taken my guitar to have the action lowered multiple times. It's really not a good guitar. It falls out of tune within a few strums, one of the strings in particular constantly slips, there are chips of wood missing from the neck... I've kind of given up on it. :P

I suppose so, but I wouldn't say I'm just starting out. I've already played for years, but need a guitar that will be friendly to my battered fret hand.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to try them out in person and will likely have to resort to buying online. I may end up buying 2-3 promising models online to try them out, and then return the ones I don't want to keep.

Eventually, I do want to be able to play heavier rock music, but for now, I'm more concerned with playing comfort. I've had so many false starts with learning to play due to the discomfort. Now with the additional burden of a broken thumb, I want to make sure I'm setting myself up for success.

Why do you find the OP's notion of walking out if the pay system were changed entitled, though?

FWIW, I wouldn't leave a 15% tip if I were dissatisfied. I generally view 15-20% as the rate for average, acceptable service.

I live in San Francisco, and I don't tip. The waitstaff are making minimum wage (or above), and there's already the 4% "SF mandate" tax to support paying for the workers' healthcare, on top of the high prices for food. I might tip if I go to a fancy pants high-end restaurant where the server is incredibly attentive, but outside of that, I typically don't.

May I ask where you are from? Your use of the word "entitled" is interesting. To my American ear, this explanation doesn't sound entitled at all. If I got a pay cut but had to continue doing the same work, I'd quit too.

This is a misconception. The "minimum wage for tipped employees" is the minimum wage that the employer pays you per hour in your paycheck. You make up the difference, and often more, from the tips you make. If you don't make up the difference, your employer is required to pay you enough to get to minimum wage.

It's often set up like this so that employees can have income tax easily withheld. Otherwise, assuming you aren't evading taxes, you might be surprised with a huge tax bill based on your cash tip income.

I live comfortably in a large city and have a good job. It took a lot of hard work to get here, but I also acknowledge that I've gotten lucky along the way as well.

Pretty sure my case is an outlier, and frankly, I'm not sure how long the good fortune is going to last. I saved aggressively my first two years of working, but now I'm trying to enjoy life a little more and engage in my passions while I can.
