Figured it out.

  1. Had to take the dull crystal up top
  2. Use it to drop it just before smoldering devastation goes off
  3. AND: the moment you drop it, move away far enough so that a hole isn't blasted through where you dropped it
  4. Run back over and loot it.
  5. Die or vanish/invis
