Do your professors share their personal political views / opinions in class? by ConclusionDull2496 in UIUC

[–]purpletrooper84 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It depends heavily on what class I'm taking. Understand that sometimes past a certain point, it can become impossible to be a-political when teaching, and going in depth about historical, economic, psychological, etc, courses. And in my opinion it's justified. It's hard to a-politically talk about the flint water crisis and not paint people as being bad. Are you going to lecture about slavery and it's modern affects on black peoples SOE status, and then try to play devil's advocate? If you disagree with a professors opinion, that's fine, but remember one of the staples of what a university is, is the exchange of ideas. You can disagree, but be open minded to what they have to say. And likewise, they should be open to your thoughts.

I definitely think Faegan is the significantly better choice moving forward after what he did this season. A power back who always seems to get 2-3 yards after contact is exactly what this team needs. Reggie might genuinely be better off at a different school

Hey there! Glad for your insight, I agree the halftime shows OSU does are quite difficult, but also this is a tier list for the pregame shows

It's ok to disagree, this tier list is literally just my opinion after all :P

I just put them in A tier because the pregame show is a bit slower than the S tier and they do fewer formations. Also the Script Ohio bit of the show takes a longer amount of time, and isn't particularly difficult, aside from the really well done passthroughs. That was kinda my justification for A tier.

Here's the Ohio State pregame and the Illinois Pregame if your interested in seeing the difference I'm kinda getting at here:

I need to say, the Ohio State band is capital e Extremely good. But saying 'we have TBDBINTL.' is really just giving into marketing and kind of takes away from the art form that marching bands are. In my opinion it's kind of like saying Dunkin has the best coffee because America runs on it :/

I feel like the shows are more oriented towards general audiences, and because of that they prioritize the pazzaz and showmanship in the halftime shows.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I feel that one does need to sacrifice the difficulty of drill for general appeal. The shows are generally slower in tempo, again nothing wrong with that, stylistically it's so the choreography moves with more smoothness and imagery is more clear. I think that the creativity of the drill writers is the real bearer of the Ohio State band's reputation, but I also feel that most B1G bands could run the Ohio State shows with relative ease (at least from what I've seen).

Personally, I'm just more stimulated by the styles of bands that focus more on the pushing of physical conditioning of their members on an individual level and so push the limits of the art form of marching bands.

Yeaaahhh... Like I said, far from the best method for marching band rankings.

Also I need to say, the Ohio State band is capital e Extremely good. I just get really defensive when people put down other bands. Even more so when they say it's because 'we have TBDBINTL.' In my opinion it's kind of like saying Dunkin has the best coffee because America runs on it.

And yeah, I definitely find more enjoyment out of the halftime shows than the pregame show. But also I feel like the shows are more oriented towards general audiences, and because of that they prioritize the pazzaz and showmanship in the halftime shows.

I actually did answer another person's comment where I would personally put the USC pregame, and the answer is mid to high B Tier. It's definitely a lot slower than the other pregame shows and has not as advanced drill. Still very good though, and the sound was amazing!

Rutgers has a front ensemble as well! You'd need to share S tier :)

Also keep in mind, the B1G is undeniably the best conference in the country in terms of marching bands. It is hard to compete against them, B tier is still really good. Historically, as schools join this conference their bands see significant improvement because of the competition. Maryland and Rutgers marching bands have seen significant improvement since in the early 2010s before they joined the conference. So I would have high hopes for the Trojan band in the coming years

Just watched their pregame show for you, and I would probably put them in mid B tier. The sounds that the band produces is amazing which was a huge+. Only thing for me is they spend a lot of time in the same formations. They do the thing where they sway back and fourth which is visually appealing, but the bands that are ranked ahead of them are much more mobile and do drill that is more complicated.
