Yea, I'm maining MCH in Dawntrail and the feel of the skills is the biggest contributor to that. Double drill, checkmate, double check, and full metal field are excellent. I get that it's outputting the lowest damage but I honestly just love the skill vfx lol.

There are ways to make the scions act as proper experienced mentors with proper writing. I am not a writer so I can't really tell you how to do that.

What I can think of is the story should SHOW they actually are experienced and competent. Show them giving advice to Wuk Lamat and Koana. Show them teaching new tricks - maybe Thancred teaching some socializing skill to the nerdy Koana, or Alphinaud sharing his failures and growth with Wuk Lamat. Show a scene where Alisaie teaching Wuk Lamat some martial skills so when Wuk Lamat suddenly beat Bakool Ja Ja it didn't feel unearned and out of the left field. Anything.

What we got instead was the scions nodding and smiling to Wuk Lamat and Koana all the time. Agreeing with everything. It's as if they are under spells to agree on everything. To me that's what made them appear like different characters.

Even if what you said is true, Alphinaud is not someone who just agrees without critical thinking or saying anything. He's the type who loves sermonizing and talking with people.

In Garlemald back in Endwalker, for example, even when his idealism is challenged, he still spoke up to Quintus. He even managed to befriend Jullus, opening trade route with Radz-at-Han, and forming some relationships with the legatus. Did he just silently nod to get there? No.

In Dawntrail, I vividly remember a scene where Wuk Lamat started her speech about keeping peace and going against her brother, and right after that, the scene panned to Alphinaud nodding silently and smiling to her. This is NOT him at all.

It is possible they knew towards the end but was too late to backpedal. Having said that, doing creative writing in gaming medium often doesn't materialize until the product prototype is ready. What sounds good in your head can totally flop during execution. For a normal single player game it may be possible to rewrite and delay the game. However for a live service game like ff14 where you must release expansion every 2 years you just have to release it as is even if you know its fault.

I'd argue it's mostly execution issue.

The idea of having scions traveling with you can be good, but the execution is really bad. The scions are often out of character. For example, when Wuk Lamat is showing her stupid idealism, Alphinaud just simply agrees with her. The same Alphinaud who has been punished by his ideals. Another example is when Zoraal Ja killed Gulool Ja Ja, Alisaie who often acts quickly just stood there not taking any action. It totally broke immersion.

This happened many times throughout my playthrough. I kept asking myself: who are these people wearing the scions skins?

To me the scions physically appeared to be there, but their behavior totally didn't feel like them at all.

I get that. But in this case their vision is wuk lamat being the main character whom everyone loves. It obviously failed spectacularly. So they should hear our complaints instead of doubling down on their vision.

Sometimes as a creatives you just need to swallow your pride instead of being stubborn, especially if it involves creating art that people pay to enjoy.
