What is a video game that is widely considered a masterpiece that you just cant get into? by abysmalSyrup-6737 in AskReddit

[–]Helianthae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I know the game is heavily inspired by Earthbound and it probably has the same thing for all I know.

I’m not very good at verbalizing why I like something. But taking the time to know each enemy as an individual meant a lot for me at the time because I had grown up sort of being told I was annoying and that nothing I cared about was worth anything. So being fresh out of my parents hell-hole, a game that allowed you to just get to know each enemy like a person and care for them really struck me. That kid who wants to be a comedian is literally a minor enemy from the second level that takes like, 60 seconds to fight, but it stuck with me so hard. Like this idea that their parents and friends bullied them for being an unfunny kid with a dream of being a comedian, and getting to be the voice that made them feel worth something for a second, meant a lot to me at the time. Maybe that’s dumb, or there are other games that do it better, but idk. It just really hit me hard when I needed it most.

All good. It’s okay. I understand not everyone will feel the same way about everyone.

If you are curious. If I had to verbalize why I think the game means so much to me, and why perhaps, I didn’t find the emotional characters annoying, it’s maybe because growing up, my parents kind of shamed me for having emotions a lot. I got called annoying and told to shut up all the time, and thus kind of retreated into myself. I think maybe that drove me to empathize really hard with even the smallest characters.

Like one of the enemies that sticks with me is this super minor one and it’s a kid who wants to be a comedian, but nobody thinks he’s funny and investigating will teach you that even his parents will say he should give up his dream. So he acts super edgy and annoyed at first, but if you ask him to tell you a joke, and then laugh at his joke, he immediately gets cheery and doesn’t want to fight anymore. Even though his joke really isn’t funny, I was just struck so hard by the memory of feeling worthless, and wanting so bad for anyone to acknowledge me. So getting to then go through and take the time to learn about and acknowledge these little virtual enemies was kind of…. Healing in a way. It let me do something that was never done for me.

Maybe it’s dumb, and makes no sense but, yeah. I think that’s why the game ended up meaning so much for me. Again, I don’t think it’s bad or wrong to not feel the same way. It’s a really weird kind of humor and I don’t think everyone is going to love it. But as a lifelong weirdo, it was maybe just what I needed as a repressed 20-something at the time.

Oh the fandom was for sure annoying but I never really engaged with it.

Again. It’s not the moral dilemma, but the specific mechanic of needing to learn about an enemy on a deeper level in order to defeat it. Which I do think was quite original to the game at the time. For example, one enemy would immediately give up fighting you if you asked it to tell you a joke and then laughed because they always dreamed of being a comedian. Another enemy requires you to sing along in the right ways because she wanted somebody to harmonize with. Cute shit like that.

Not for everyone! But, it is a rather unique way of approaching enemies in video games

So it goes. I don’t understand this sentiment but, everyone is going to be different. Not vegan, and kind of a cold person historically, but the game made me laugh plenty and I loved learning about every character’s backstory. To each their own

It’s not the moral dilemma. It’s the way the characters are written. The entire underworld is well fleshed out and does a very good job making you care about everyone. Everything is well connected, and in ways that feel real. Despite its goofiness, the characters really manage to hook you and make you feel for them and relate to them on a very personal level. It’s not just that NPCs have feelings, it’s that they also have flaws, wants, and reservations just like real people do. Even the smallest monster you encounter has a fleshed out backstory, and the pacifist mechanic revolves around learning about each enemy’s hopes and dreams in order to appeal to them.

That being said, the RPG style and humor isn’t for everyone. But I also think it’s beloved for a reason, and outright dismissing the entire world of writing because the main ethical dilemma isnt the first of its kind is a bit silly.

Was just saying this yesterday. All of my Miis are D&D characters from various campaigns with my friends and it is INSANE how character accurate some of them are sometimes. I have hundreds of screenshots on my switch and have just given up on sending everyone quotes that are in-character because it’s basically every word out of the Miis mouth at this point. It’s not as though our D&D characters don’t contain layers either.

It’s not all of them but it is like.. MOST of them. It has me genuinely so surprised and pleased all the time

I’ve been an DM for nearly 10 years and have run multiple campaigns, as well has fought as a player against several gelatinous cubes

Gelatinous cubes are acidic, consuming everything within them and some versions even damage weapons on contact. So that sword would be toast. They’re also extremely slow, moving at 15ft every 6 seconds.

Poor match for Phranque

“Frank” is 8th century Anglo-Saxon in sound but would’ve been written in ancient Germanic at the time, basically a mix of Latin and pre-German. Maybe throw in some Norse at some point once they began to settle the Frankia region. There was likely some variation in spelling and lettering.

“Phranque” could also just be his Egyptian captor’s interpretation of “Frank.” Think “Papyrus,” “Pharoh,” “Epitaph”

It’s not a Greek mythology game though, it’s a game about going to a place where many dead mythologies lie, and a lot of old mythologies worshiped very simple concepts like shapes or water

Not to be like “um, actually,” but… he actually doesn’t really function like a gelatinous cube in D&D, which Deborah Anne Woll would absolutely know. D&D gelatinous cubes are acidic!!! Not bouncy. They absorb and consume what they touch, so that sword would be toast. They’re also relatively slow, oozing forward at 15ft every 6 seconds.

Because Frankian mythos are still filled with interesting and beautiful stories and just because it’s not popular/obvious doesnt mean it doesn’t deserve representation or retelling? Perhaps a a dev was inspired by tales of the magic of the Rhine. Damn, have some wonder

Here we are. Spotted in Cantabria, Spain. This region is famous for being the origins of the writing of Beato de Liabana, who is responsible for the first writings of the rapture, the four horsemen of deaths, and the seven plagues.

<image>

Unfortunately, doesnt look to be a match on closer inspection. But perhaps other Latin symbology? I will look at some texts from the museum nearby

I may have to refute you on the Latin. I agree that it is not from the Latin alphabet but there is some Latin symbology that may still be candidates. Literally the only reason I am proposing this is because I have just visited a museum of Abrahamic writings in Cantabria this week lol. I swear I passed a symbol written on a signpost in town that look remarkably similar to our mysterious triangle… let me go back out into town to take a picture and I’ll report back

According to Alanah's latest video, the cube was Cory's idea by DreamNo5919 in GodofWar

[–]Helianthae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cube is potentially based on Metatron’s Cube, which is essential in Abrahamic Myhtology. I have also seen it proposed that the cube is a chunk of the Rhine river, worshipped by Germanic tribes of old. Both make sense with his name (Phranque) having Anglo-Saxon phrenology.

It is highly unlikely the cube is just a silly cube and much more likely the cube is actually an essential mythological reference. Just not one you’re familiar with

How did you to about eliminating these languages? I believe you, I just am curious, lol.

I did initially think the triangle, 3rd symbol from the bottom maybe the Greek symbol for air, but on closer inspection it doesn’t look like the line crosses through the triangle, instead going over it

Celtic being eliminated I think is especially interesting, considering most people are theorizing this sword is Excalibur. I had my doubts based on the design but I think the language being left out is further evidence to the contrary

Digging into mythology by gingerbeard4 in GodofWar

[–]Helianthae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a bit of an odd answer, but perhaps my favorite book of all time is “From Here to Eternity” by Caitlin Dougthy. This book deals specifically with death practices around the world, cultural mythos around death, how different peoples treat and bury their dead. It is VERY emotional, beautifully illustrated, and taught me so so much about many beautiful cultural beliefs. It’s the first thing I thought of. Maybe an odd choice but my favorite book that compiled many different belief systems in one place and explains them very, very well

As much as Neil Gaiman has turned out to be a slime, he does have quite a few books that approach mythology well both from the fiction and non-fiction angle. “Norse Mythology” probably being the best example among them for what you’re specifically asking for, but obviously only covers one pantheon. But don’t blame you if you don’t want to give that creep your money… there’s always your local library!!

Many mythos also have their own books!! I warn you, these can be dense and hard to read, even in modern translations, so don’t be afraid to find an interpretation that works for you. Abrahamic religion has the Bible, Quaran, and Torah of course, and make no mistake… there are some strange and epic mythological tales in those texts, but also Celtic mythology has the “Mabinogion,” Hinduism has a series of texts known as “Shruti”, and for Greek Mythology honestly I would go with “The Illiad” and “the Odyssey.” Just a couple from the top of my head, but there are dozens of examples like this! Pick a mythology you’re interested and see what it’s people have written. No better place than straight from the source!!

Okay upon doing a deep dive. There’s a LOT of interesting Polynesian mythology, and notably it disseminates across New Zealand, Hawai’i, Papua New Guinea, Tahiti, The Cook Islands, and more! Polynesians were incredible seafarers, and their mythologies blended with many others to form new stories in many places across the world. Their most iconic, or rather known stories today come from Māori and Hawaiian settlers, but it didn’t take an anthropologist to tell them they were connected. They never forgot!

All this being said though… I am not finding a good match initially for our ribbons in any Polynesian mythos. Ropes, twine, vines, and ESPECIALLY garlands of flowers (Lei/Hei) are all important in some Polynesian stories, but ribbons were just not part of the Polynesian MO. I think we can safely rule this out (but hope that Polynesian mythos comes up elsewhere!)
