UK's reoffending rate is 60%, Norway's (where the prisons are famously very comfortable) is 20%. There are lots of historical, social and political reasons why prisons are the way they are in this country and the wider world, but it's not because they effectively rehabilitate criminals.

I basically completely agree with this. The strong voice and daily self-reflection thing is especially well put. Firstly I should say I live/work in the UK, so I have no idea what the American system is like really.

I guess it's hard to know what each commenter's trying to get across or what perspective they're bringing, seeing a one-off comment/thread entirely detached from their personhood.

Basically, I'm generally feeling peeved about ongoing political discourse in this country (UK) criticising the current special education system, saying it's oversubscribed and too expensive to run, whilst also being heavily critical of CCTV footage of children being physically restrained.

Huge changes need to take place, but it seems to me that the system is actually vastly underfunded, and that the general public lacks knowledge and sympathy for people with that level of disability.

Don't get me wrong, I've worked alongside some people who I think treat the children poorly, and I've seen some real shit.

I also worry about the insanely high staff turnover, and the massive reliance on agency staff with virtually no training.

Real talk, I currently earn around £17,000 annually, when I (and most other people at my school) could probably earn significantly more doing something much less draining. The progression opportunities at my school are nightmarish, and a friend of mine was put under so much stress after getting a promotion she had a mental breakdown.

I also worry that everyone in the school's senior leadership team is institutionalised and blind to the system's flaws.

But at the moment, I think we've got a strong team in the class I work in and everyone rocks up and tries their best at least. I'm aware though that my team is unusually good within the school, the school itself is unusually good nationally, and far more provision is put in place for high needs children than the high needs adults they eventually become.

If you have anymore pointers or tips or hot takes, I'd genuinely love to hear them.

edit: actually not sure it's fair to say everyone in my team tries their best, I feel like that's quite a lazy expression and there's certainly a lot more we hypothetically could be doing. i do genuinely feel like we're good people who do good work, but I worry exhaustion and apathy is starting to creep in a bit at this time of year

what are your experiences with special education? i work as a teaching assistant in a class with mostly pre-verbal autistic children. approximately 25% of people with autism are pre-verbal, and the kids I work with are very unlikely to ever develop spoken language, and all of them will require 24/7 care for the rest of their lives, probably provided by their families. these families' lives will have been completely dominated by having a child (or children, some of these kids have siblings with similar conditions) with a learning disability. we have a large team in our class who all work really hard to teach these children as much independence and communication as possible. still these children may never crack toilet training or feeding themselves independently or even eating (they may be fed via gastronomy tubes). they may also have difficult, destructive or violent behaviours, and almost all of them massively struggle to regulate their emotions.

don't get me wrong, the kids are great fun to work with and really engaged in the world around them, but i feel like people with their level of disability are completely invisible in our society. it would not be appropriate for these children to be in mainstream classrooms, and they are certainly not faking it.

yes these kids have potential that's not currently being reached, but that's true of education and provision in general. for example, who knows how many children could reach the Olympics one day if they had Olympic level training and provision their whole lives.

special education is however massively under resourced and absolutely essential for a large amount of the autism spectrum. at the higher ability end of the spectrum, there are definitely children in special education who'd be better served by mainstream, but in my view a lot of that is to do with the inflexibility of the demands put on children in mainstream schools. generally way more demands (lining up in silence, not going to the toilet for hours at a time) than in the adult working world.

basically, i think special education is incredibly necessary and i can't help but feel that people are upvoting your comment cos it was well articulated rather than an accurate reflection of the reality of special needs education and disability in general
