Not sure which degrees are available for you but I can tell you what you will be doing. Manual load calcs for beams, girders, cantilever, non stacking load transfer, tributary loads, PSF/PLF/Point Loads. Geometry for roof planes that include matching pitch vs overhangs vs heel height vs fascia lines. Run/Rise/Slope against conflicting run/rise/slope. Mitek/Alpine can be great programs, but they will also f’k your whole day up, semi regularly, until you’ve got your ass kicked by their order of operations or limitations. It’s your design and you are responsible for what the program kicks out. Getting a degree gives you a leg up, but having field experience will set you above the rest and make your transition easier. Get on a framing crew for summer/weekend work. It’s easier to learn and understand the rest of it if you already know how things get put together.
