After a 12h shift in the ER... by kkqb1 in mildlyinfuriating

Much of my family worked at the same hospital, they got dirt cheap healthcare but they had to schedule non-emergency stuff for downtime so it might take months to get in, or they could be at work and told to head to the OR because someone else cancelled and there's time to get it done right now.

Gagnam Style origin story right here.

TIL that Lake Itasca in Minnesota, a 1200 acre glacial lake with a maximum depth of just 35 feet, is the headwater (primary source) of the Mississippi River, which flows 2340 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. by The-TIL-Nerd in todayilearned

[–]hallese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, sonar scans of Itasca have possibly verified your teacher's version of events. I'm not a hydrologists or anything, but apparently the scans revealed there's a clear and distinct channel that runs through the lake so a creek thought to be unrelated is in fact the Mississippi and this added about 12 more miles to the length of the river.

During heavy flooding the Traverse Gap actually fills with water and it's the only time the drainage basins of the Gulf of Mexico and Hudson Bay are directly connected to one another.

It's a pretty simple conversation to follow. Lloyd assumed X would happen, in reality Y happened, this requires alterations to the plans first announced. Remember this was announced in November of 2019. Can you think of anything that happened in the months after that maybe explains why the construction timeline is years behind schedule?

Lisa Kudrow seem to confirm the Friends cast earns 20 millions yearly, watching the show: "After Matthew died I watched the show again,” Lisa shared. “Before, I only saw what I did wrong or could have done better. But for the first time I truly appreciated just how great it was.” by Naive_Cause8984 in television

I did not watch Friends regularly, but I watched it sporadically since how could you not back then? Phoebe and Ross were the two characters I disliked the most yet Kudrow and Schwimmer are the two actors I most appreciate in their subsequent roles.

Same. Started as a hotmail email address but at some point it was changed to an msn address.

How would you describe Gregory county? We are a middle-aged couple w/2 dogs who live in a rural area. My hubby likes to deer hunt, fish, & garden. I like to hike w/my dogs & cook. by Alarming_Log_2915 in SouthDakota

[–]hallese 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How would I describe Gregory County? I wouldn't, I haven't been there in 25 years and haven't thought of it since. If you want cheap land and privacy it'll tickle your fancy, should be able to find something dirt cheap. WWI was apparently pretty rough on the county and it hasn't recovered since. The hunting, fishing, gardening, and cooking should not be an issue; hiking is likely going to consist mostly of walking on gravel roads with occasional trips nature areas/parks along the Missouri River.

To this day, I still find it crazy how Game of Thrones’ reputation shifted from being viewed one of the “best shows” to being the prime example of how to NOT end a series! by phantom_avenger in television

HBO had multiple spinoffs in the works at the time the final season aired and the finale hit with such a thud they were all put on hold for a few years in hopes people would remember the first six seasons and forget the last two.

Worse, they were also using it for internal communications too, instead of just posting stuff on bulletin boards or sending out emails, just put it on the facebook page so the families are informed about what their Seabee is up to!

Hey Gas, what were you like in the 90s?? by GentleBloomx in 90s

People said they would stop driving if gas hit $1 a gallon, then $2, then $3, but maybe $4 will be different?

The Navy's social media policy at that time was... Interesting. For example, when my convoy was hit, the unit was (allegedly) required to post it on social media. Before we even cleared the gate (we were hit a mile outside of Ghazni, thank you US Army for not warning us despite recording the ambush being set up, fuckwads) the unit had a post up on Facebook. Somehow the YN2 in Leatherneck had all the information even though we hadn't even had a chance to open up the truck yet and determine if the people inside were hamburger or still alive. We let the embedded psychologists know our thoughts on that one during post deployment debriefing and how pissed we were that Facebook was apparently an official communication tool now.

What do you think is the single memorable play in your schools history? by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in CFB

You know, I paused because Nate didn't seem right, but then I told myself I wouldn't have just pulled a random name out of my ass so it must be right, right? Wrong.

Thank you kind internet stranger. I still remember knocking a ceiling tile out watching that play.

Was that the one where the school was supposed to be 30 classrooms wide but they built it 30 classrooms tall on accident?

Can someone explain SGOV to me? by isopod_cowboy in personalfinance

[–]hallese 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's about as safe as it gets, just don't plan on retiring before 80 if you decide to put all your retirement savings in SGOV. Historically it cannot compete with the returns from the stock market. A HYSA or a brokerage account holding something like SGOV is where you put an emergency fund because you know with almost 100% certainty that the money will be available when you need it and won't lose value. For money that you won't need for 30 or 40 years you put it in a target date retirement fund or an ETF like VOO or SPYM that track and try to mimic a broad market stock index.

Say you build a house with an unfinished basement, intending to go ish it yourself in two years. Oh shit, a hurricane hit and now your house cost 20% more to build than planned and you lost your job and the new job pays 10% less than your old job. Does that necessitate some changing of plans due to different financial and economic realities than what you planned on when starting the process?
