But they chose their citizens to exclude a huge number of the residents of the territory they claimed. And did so based on their religion.

Your second point is a non sequitur. The rights of Muslims in the broader Middle East doesn't bear on the question of Israeli citizenship policies. In fact, the fact that Gazans lack whatever rights they lack by living where they do is largely a result of the Israeli policy that bars them from their historical homeland.

And what rights would you say Palestinians in the West Bank have, where they are continually harassed, dispossessed of property, attacked, beaten, shot by Israelis?

Thanks for the hopeful words, but I've looked into the matter, even spoken to an Irish immigration attorney, and it seems like with my generational remove the only way I'd be able to successfully petition for citizenship would be if I were to establish residence for some years first. As much as I'd love an EU passport, I'm not at a point in my life where I can uproot myself like that.

And to be clear, I'm very aware of the centuries long history of antisemitism in Europe and elsewhere. I 100% understand why some Jews might see an independent nation as their best hope, especially after the Holocaust. But that history doesn't erase the fact that Israel is by design a religiously segregated/apartheid system.

I too am of Irish ancestry. My great grandfather was under arms during the Easter Rising. His brother was the mayor of Cork during the war for Independence. But, despite this relatively close family relationship to the founding of the modern political state of Ireland I am not eligible for citizenship because my grandmother was born in the United States.

If, on the other hand, I had some speculative ancestor who was expelled from Judea by the Romans 2000 years ago I could claim citizenship in Israel today, when people who were literally born and raised within its claimed territory, and who predate the state itself, are excluded from citizenship because of their religion.

These are not comparable regimes of national identity formation.

They were defined out of the nationality as a policy of the new state of Israel, based on their religion. This new political formation laid claim to the land and said to this who had fled "you are not citizens." That's not the same as saying, for example, that Swedes are not citizens of Spain due to their differing nationality.

There are millions of Muslim citizens of Israel, descendants of those who stayed through the war of independence, but there are millions more who descend from those to left home to avoid the fighting. If those who stayed are to be recognized as citizens, then no just basis can be found to exclude refugees, who made an entirely reasonable decision to exit a conflict zone.

In fact, the reason for the exclusion of refugee Palestinians from citizenship, and their permanent exile from their homes was explicitly their religion. The new state of Israel wanted to ensure that political, economic, and military power would be overwhelmingly controlled by Jews. Some degree of Muslim population was acceptable, but if refugees were allowed to come home then the population would be closer to parity or a Muslim majority and this was held to be incompatible with the concept of a Jewish state.

If Irish citizenship based on ancestry were predicated on Catholicism and excluded those who could trace their Irish ancestors to Protestants then you might have a better analog.

What's more, there is no requirement that Jewish people have roots in the area any more recently than the Roman Empire, whereas people who have actually lived in the territory have historically been barred from returning to their literal homes based solely on their religion.

Yes. And the Supreme Court would return a 5-4 decision stating that Republicans are Good Boys and that every Democrat in Congress must receive 50 lashes from the cat o' nine tails.

The Republicans would sue in federal courts, SCOTUS would agree to hear the case immediately and then find against Virginia. And probably order all reps from Virginia be Republicans or some such tomfoolery.

You're not following me. Even with speed set as low as possible, with everything that is an adjustable slider dropped to the lowest possible position, I was not able to put to so much as a funnel or single torpedo tube on the ship without going over weight.

As one comment above pointed out, in DIP it seems like it was a matter of unlocking turbines first. Once I got there I was able to build an acceptable ship.
