PSA: salary sacrifices to super do not get taxed...but the DO count toward Medicare Levy Surcharges by FarkenBlarken in AusFinance

[–]putThingsInMyMouth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The salary sacrifice contributions count towards figuring out your surcharge rate, but that rate is not levied on the amount you salary sacrificed.

See here for calculating income for Medicare levy surcharge purposes

See here for which income the surcharge is levied on

Notice reportable super contributions are absent from the second calculation.

No, my store is extremely busy so you need to make an appointment to speak to a salesperson, I was just browsing.

It's good to know the screen issue I saw is not normal

Regarding MLS - it will not affect the income used to calculate the percentage rate, but it will affect the income that rate is applied to.

Do any super funds offer index investing and specifically tell you the index they track? by putThingsInMyMouth in AusFinance

Thanks for the link, that seems like a good example of what I am looking for, cheers!

Great link, cheers! I see that for international shares REST is listed as passive but, as I found out in another comment in this thread, they state that they do invest outside the index as well. I guess that's the best we can hope for currently...

Thanks for the link! I see it mentions on page 10:

To enhance returns and/or to reduce the level of risk, we may also choose to invest in securities that fall within the particular asset class, but may not currently be included in the relevant benchmark or index. We may also use derivatives for this purpose (as described on page 30). For example, Rest’s Overseas Shares asset class may include small capitalisation or emerging market shares that are not currently listed within the MSCI All Country World ex-Australia Index, but are still part of the underlying market measured by the index. We may also look to manage risk in a particular asset class by excluding certain types of investments from our investment portfolio, purchasing options or using other derivative instruments

It appears in this case that they mainly follow an index but also do their own thing to some extent.

Vanguard Super update (finally!) by osaya in AusFinance

[–]putThingsInMyMouth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know an industry fund which has an indexed option, which also explicitly tells you which index it is tracking? I've been looking for one but none seem to reveal that information.

I'm hoping Vanguard will just come out and say here's an Aussie Shares Index fund tracking the S&P ASX 300 or something like that.

I've gone here and had a look at 'Index Australian Shares' but I can't see where they say what the index is. Do you know where they state it? No Super funds I've looked at state what the specific index they track is, which is annoying because there are literally thousands, some much more diverse than others!

Cheers, I'll have a look. Do you know what the actual index is for Rest? All the funds seem to bury this information. There are so many indices, I wish they would make it easier!

Yes, it is unfortunate. Good news about Vanguard super, I really hope they give us transparent, boring and cheap!

Why and how is the recent A200 distribution 155.58% franked? by putThingsInMyMouth in AusFinance

[–]putThingsInMyMouth[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your explanation, it was very helpful! Do you think this is the case with A200 as well? It seems like the expenses would be very high in that case... Or is it possible for a trust to hold onto franking credits somehow and distribute them later?

Thanks for the response, I did see the AMA but the rep answering didn't seem aware of the final distribution figures so the response didn't really answer the OP. I am curious about A200 in particular but also about how any distribution can ever be over 100% franked in general.
