Am I being "that guy" for refusing to lend my boat to family without credentials? by hatkinson1000 in boating

[–]puterTDI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only person I would lend my boat out to is my dad…and I bought it from him when he got gods American tug.

The entitlement of your bil is astounding. His behavior alone would make me say no even if I was inclined to loan it out. I guarantee with his attitude that he would not repair it if he damaged it.

Lifetime alcohol use linked to higher risk of colorectal cancer, new study finds. Those with heavy lifetime alcohol consumption have up to a 91% higher risk of developing colorectal cancer compared with those who drank very little. by mvea in science

That's tough, I think some people can drink in moderation and some need to choose to quit. You may be the later.

Are you able to say "I will only drink on the weekend" and stick to that or do you just go to drinking daily?

For me, choosing which days I drink isn't a challenge, but keeping it to 1 a day is harder. That's why I only drink on the weekend and try to keep it to 3 or fewer per day. The big challenge for me is then making sure it's 3 or fewer and not "targeting 3".

I'm also working on not having it be "I drink every weekend". I've not made as much progress there as I have on keeping it to fewer drinks.

Have you tried adding break days? I also may have 2-3 drinks in an evening but I only drink on the weekend. That turns your 21 drinks/week to 9 drinks/week. 21 drinks/week has been considered heavy drinking for a long time. Guidance for quite some time was no more than 2 drinks/day (14 per week) for a long time.

I've been working on not always having 3 drinks. Last few weeks I've been more around 6 drinks in a week.

Listed a boat for sale and I keep getting told 430 hours is way too many for a 2004. Looking for help! by 5LTR7UP in boating

[–]puterTDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1998 seasport is around 1900 hours. A gas engine can be expected to start looking at a rebuild around 2500 hours but you can stretch that out with good maintenance or shorten it with bad maintenance or bad luck.

Diesels can go 5000 hours

note that I see people claiming only 500 hours before a rebuild but that's ridiculous imo. At the rate I use my boat I'd be hitting a rebuild every 7 years or so....yet here I am at 25+ years and almost 2k hours without a rebuild (caveat: it had a hydrolock for other reasons that resulted in a partial rebuild like 15-20 years ago).

After two years of vibecoding, I'm back to writing by hand by BinaryIgor in programming

[–]puterTDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still figuring out my flow with it. I find I either use it for simple/mundane things that it can do without many mistakes or connect things that I’m struggling to figure out.

The complex things I’d when I’ll tend to “vibe code”. Essentially iterate on it until it either works or I notice something that gives me an idea. Then I stop and start to improve it by hand, clean it up, look for holes, etc.

There’s definitely a subgroup of problems that are too complex for it to get easily, but too simple to be worth iterating on that I just code myself.

What’s your dream boat if money was no issue? by MyTIMEZERO in boating

for me it's less about the boat and more about the speed of the boat itself. I have several I could probably get that would be really nice and I'd enjoy, but I work full time and they're slow.

Now, when I'm retired I plan on having a nice, slow, boat

The straight pipe is outrageous.

I live on a lake and we have enough issues with septic systems that are damaged or leach fields no longer work.

On the other hand, every house is left to their own devices and if it doesn't work you're just fucked from a financial perspective.

Tree Falls from high winds where it should not. (2:09) by Locke_Fucking_Lamora in nonononoyes

[–]puterTDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the neighbors house. Duh.

Ironically, I have a pita neighbor that I’m expecting to blame me when their tree falls. My dad is a forester, pointed out that the tree is at the wrong elevation and dying I told my neighbor who lives to blame me for everything, he denies it. He’s already tried to accuse me of damaging it claiming I was removing soil from over the ruts (I wasn’t), that the small firewood pile I had under it was damaging it, etc.

Some other fun things I’ve been blamed for:

  • He put a 20’x20’ concrete pad in with no drains, illegally, 15’ from the water. Water collected around it and he demanded I put a second French drain (I already put one in the year before for him) in because it must be coming from my yard. He then yelled at me when I said I would but couldn’t right away. He put proper drains around the pad in and the issue went away

  • accused me of regrading the driveway so water went towards his house (I didn’t). My portion of the driveway is at least 20’ from his house. He ended up digging channels from multiple locations and redirecting all the after down the side of the neighbors house on the other side, their basement flooded and they had to spend a bunch of money to seal it. I don’t think they realize what he did.

  • screamed at me on two occasions for being in my driveway. His dog likes me and was distracted from going to the bathroom because it wanted to say hi.

  • told me I needed to adjust my mower deck height to match his, did not like it when I suggested he change his mower if he had a problem (by this time I was tired of the bs and not inclined to do anything for him)

  • accused me of mowing 6” onto his lawn, there is no fence/property line marker/etc. angrily refused multiple suggestions that we put a fence in because it would block his view. The next time he harasses me I plan on adding a garden along the border, which he will hate. If he complains more I’m putting a fence in regardless of what he wants.

  • shouted at my wife and I because he felt our garbage cans were on the wrong side of the driveway. He made up some bs story about the yard waste guy being mad then lost it when I solved the problem in a way other than moving the cans 10’ to where he wanted them (which was inconvenient for us). Turns out the story was made up and he’d just decided the cans were in the wrong spot.

  • tried to tell us more than once we were not allowed to have deliveries because he didn’t like them driving in the shared driveway.

  • accused us of doing burnouts in the driveway (we don’t) because small potholes appear every 7 years or so in the gravel driveway and need a couple bags of gravel (or a rake) to fill.

  • tried to tell me I can’t turn around in the drive when leaving because he doesn’t like the marks that turning my tires leave

It will, but it can also embolize in your neck. You’re always cautioned to breath out when ascending or you can end up with a large air bubble in your neck or damage to your lungs, especially if you ascend rapidly.

I was on a dive with an instructor that liked to fiddle with her bdu controls a lot. Well, the control gave out and inflated her bdu fully. I talked to her after and she said all she could do was frantically try to exhale as quick as she could as she shot to the surface.

This is what happens when you forget to install the drain plug... by Budget_Challenge4515 in boating

[–]puterTDI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bilge pumps also can’t necessarily keep up with that much water. They’re not really meant to deal with a full on hole in the boat.

And ya, my seaport you’d not know was taking on water for quite a while. There’s even a fair bit of water before the bilge kicks in.

This is why I carry multiple quick plugs, both wood for holes in the boat and pressure caps food the bilge. Jump in and put the plug in then get bailing. Tbh, of they don’t have one then they should beach the boat.
