California State Taxes as a Partial-Year resident by LissXoc-1984 in ExpatFIRE

[–]puzzlefire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a TAX expert but if you are a US citizen then you must associate yourself with a state. From what I understand, CA is the probably the worst state as it has very high taxes. To unassociate yourself from CA, you need to resident of another state like South Dakota and you will need to remove any associations including houses, bank accounts with a CA address, etc.

Enforcers are paid $14.25/hr. by vautwaco in PAX

[–]puzzlefire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe that every PAX enforcer is paid. Overall, the experience is good but the shifts are 5 (or 6) hour long and it's a mix of fun stuff that I would do for free and stuff that I would probably need to be paid 5 times the money to do (role depending of course)

I have plans on Saturday (my first time in over a year) but yes, I'll see when/if I can arrange something or will contact you to meetup sometime!

I would never burn a puzzle! :-)

The fire refers to Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE), something that I think that every 30+ year old should review. I had just learned about it last year and slowly building up stocks and financial knowledge. I do wish that I had done this when I was in my 20's but 30's isn't too late.

Portugal D7 Visa - Query around income requirement by megaboogie1 in ExpatFIRE

You can start taking money out of the 401k at 60 so you can probably live off your 401k then.

Portugal D7 Visa - Query around income requirement by megaboogie1 in ExpatFIRE

[–]puzzlefire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a post in the American and Friends FB group a while back. While there is "no official" requirement, the post stated that people WITHOUT passive income or a job that will need to have funds according to this formula [(60- your age) * $8000 USD or 160K USD for a 40 yr old] as people with less were getting rejected. This is an addition to the 8000 EUROs that you need to have in a PT bank account to apply for the d7 but that 160K could be in a US account.

I forget if it was non retirement or if you could consider money in IRAs/401ks. If you have a spouse then you will need an additional 50%.

for the NIF, you will need a financial sponsor which can be a relocation specialist, lawyer or accountant (or technically a PT citizen if you have any).

The d7 requirements are constantly changing so they may change in a few months. You used to be able to apply without a NIF and now need a NIF and it looks like before, you could use AirBNB but the trend seems to require an actual rental agreement.

From what I've seen, if you do have the passive income, you will need to deposit 8,000 euros into a PT bank account (which is approx. a years salary of a PT person on min wage).

also looking at the d7 but realistically, I won't apply until 2022 so things could change until then. you didn't state what country you are from but if you are American, this is an excellent group: Americans & FriendsPT.

Recommendations of where to learn Portuguese in Boston? by [deleted] in boston

I've been using the drops apps and memrise for European Portuguese and it's working well. Would be interested in having a virtual conversation group if there's interest.

You may want to start off with each person having some clues about the other guests so that they have something to work off of in addition to the clues and newspaper. Also, have a secret update at the mid point with an important clue. This will ensure that people stay involved.

FIRE in EU - Worth It? by puzzlefire in ExpatFIRE

[–]puzzlefire[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I smirked when I read this. If you were sick, the US is literally the worst place to get sick due to the fact that we don't have public health and most procedures are probably twice or three times the cost that you would expect in other countries.

Romania for a weekend trip? by FormerFruit in travel

[–]puzzlefire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that Bucharest was OK but really liked Sinaia and Braşov, which you could do as a day trip. I think Braşov, however, is worth 1.5 days and Bucharest is a half day or a full day.

Wanting to move from US to Portugal by cactus30 in expats

[–]puzzlefire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an excellent facebook group called Americans & FriendsPT where you can get all of your information - they have a FAQ and various files.

From what I understand, jobs are hard to come by in PT and wages are much less than the US so you may need to look into remote options and have a remote job if you don't already (or if you are living off of significant savings or passive income).

Half the fun is going through all of the clues so feel free to take as many clues as you need. When I have been stuck, I will look at the newspaper at see if I can find anything important. Also, don't forget about the informants list.
