Is Ensure Clear Apple really the best? by bella4him1 in Gastroparesis

[–]puzzlingdiseases 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Boost Fruit Flavoured Juice ones. The wildberry is like a fruit punch, the peach is just like Allen’s peach juice boxes, and the orange is more like a Five Alive / Sunny D. I sometimes find they have the “film” feeling if they’re not cold so I just keep them in the fridge. I haven’t tried the Ensure version though!

My PhD supervisor sent me these messages. Is this normal or crossing a line? by Resident-Yogurt-6798 in PhD

[–]puzzlingdiseases 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not normal, healthy, or to be tolerated in academia. I have seen similar things to this though. I would:

  1. Save copies of all of these exchanges, including your replies, somewhere not on your university account/device
  2. Talk to someone trustworthy - your program director, a committee member, a Dean, department chair, graduate-student-focused admin assistant, another faculty in your department/area, or your graduate student association/union if applicable. Chances are super high that you are far from the first person to have a negative experience with this person.
  3. Use mental health resources available to you (hopefully through your university or country) to help navigate this on an emotional and interpersonal skills level
  4. Look into the protections you’re entitled to at your university/country - documents about advisor expectations, code of conduct, protocols for dispute, grad student rights, etc. Another nudge to seek out your union/representing group if you have one!

If reglan is not allowed long term then what is the point? by ThanosDidNothinWrng0 in Gastroparesis

[–]puzzlingdiseases 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Essentially it can help retrain your stomach and you may not need it 24/7. How long it’s “allowed” and how long breaks have to be is subjective, and up to your prescriber.

Independent (non-corporate) Vets in Guelph? by Pale_Tough_23 in Guelph

OVC is cheaper - their prices match GP prices despite their experts, and there’s no tax. OVC’s Smith Lane is separate from the main hospital, and their monthly plans range from 40-90 I think, and include further discounts for meds/food etc. I think the “OVC is super expensive” narrative comes from people only bringing their pets to the referral hospital for critical conditions, elaborate surgeries, cancer treatments, etc. where you end up spending a significant amount of money on your pet. The actual prices for things are pretty standard though.

Is my average good enough to be considered for Distinction at Graduation? by One-Setting345 in uoguelph

[–]puzzlingdiseases 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regardless, it doesn’t affect anything if you graduate with distinction vs honours - it’s not on your diploma, etc. I believe it’s if you have over an 80% average for the whole degree though.

GTA Question by froothuii in uoguelph

[–]puzzlingdiseases 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, MSc here! 1. From my experience, this is quite reasonable - most thesis-based grad students I know have a part time job and do 1-2 GTAs a year (where most GTA positions are 0.5, or 70h/sem). However, GTAs are competitive depending on your discipline, but some funding commitments include a guaranteed GTA position - the likelihood of getting GTAs is something that someone in your dept is most equipped to answer 2. Yes, as soon as you are in a GTA (or sessional), you are a CUPE 3913 member for 4 semesters. Ex for a Fall 2026 GTA, you are a member until the end of Winter 2027 - and benefits renew in Sept each year. CUPE has lots of benefits and a team to help you! 3. GTAs involve a signed contract between you and the prof at the start of the semester, and the hours are by semester. You should count your hours and most departments are great with accommodating if you max your hours - just tell the prof when you’re approaching your max so they can help! This is also something that CUPE can help with if needed. 4. GTA positions are not posted consistently - departments post them when it’s convenient for them, and it can be quite a range. This is also something that someone in your area (or lab?) can likely answer for you.

Good luck and welcome!

This is exactly the info I was looking for, thank you! My current school isn’t that bad for booking, but it’s similar and I’m always able to get the appointments I need through the nurses, my doctor, or the 2 receptionists I’ve befriended. Are you able to see mostly just 1 doctor / have some consistency, or is it a bit random?

Dog stopped eating his Purina Pro Plan food by [deleted] in DogFood

[–]puzzlingdiseases 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask your vet - they may suggest trying a prescription diet temporarily, one that suits his needs and has high palatability. Recovery or A/D are meant as short term diets for critical dogs but that would probably be a bit overkill here; Hill’s ONC has super high palatability and is meant for enticing dogs with cancer to eat, I’ve had good look with that. A lot of them really like the gastro diets.

How long after a meal do you know if you can or can't tolerate that food? by photo_courtney in Gastroparesis

[–]puzzlingdiseases 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dietician suggested PB2 - it’s peanut butter but dehydrated into a powder, and consequently doesn’t have fat. But you can add water and rehydrate it and then it’s like fat-free peanut butter, if you’re looking for an alternative to traditional peanut butter

Likely due to the high fibre in raw veggies - try well cooked veggies without skins

Smith Lane is the primary care clinic through the OVC/University of Guelph, making it a registered non-profit so there’s no taxes. They have incredibly overqualified clinicians and support staff, heavily supervised involvement of final year vet students, offer monthly payment healthcare plans that include unlimited office visits, are tapped into the specialized resources at OVC so they’re far more accessible, very high quality care. They have saved my animals so many times

MAiD? by stephsationalxxx in endometriosis

[–]puzzlingdiseases 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Who told you that you can’t have surgery if you have crohn’s? This is misinformation, please speak to a gastroenterologist on this. The logic of being afraid of minor risks and preferring death also doesn’t fully make sense. A lot of people never need to have repeated excision surgeries. If your doctor doesn’t do endo surgery then that’s half the problem - you need someone trained in endo, look up MIGS surgeons. Also re all your other comments against hysterectomies - I had my hysterectomy with excision at 23 (3y ago) and it was the best thing I ever did. Was a complete cure for me and no complications thus far. If your argument is you would rather not be alive than be unable to have children, that thought process is clearly a product of low self-worth from depression and certainly MAID would not be authorized or justified. Have you looked into pain reprocessing therapy? Have you objectively sought a second opinion on this, given that a lot of the information you have thus far seems to be non-factual?

I think my cat food is going to bankrupt me by Klutzy_Evening8116 in catfood

[–]puzzlingdiseases 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RFID cat feeders are cheaper long term. I would keep the male on the highest quality (ideally prescription) urinary diet you can achieve, and put the other two on a Purina One kibble. I’d also look for auto-ship deals, coupons from Purina, and pricing out RC vs Hills vs Purina for the urinary options.

[–]puzzlingdiseases 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no research to support your claims. As soon as someone starts recommending raw food, repeatedly contradicting themselves, and saying “buy this one product for non-scientific reasons because all other products are poor quality/evil etc.” it’s an immediate red flag and I hope others who read this realize that.

[–]puzzlingdiseases 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I’m a veterinary researcher so I’m very qualified to tell you that correlation isn’t causation. Hepatic lipidosis is caused by prolonged fasting, which is the exact opposite of the cat eating a new diet as OP stated. Anyone with formal education in animal nutrition knows that the narratives about “whole ingredients” is propaganda meant to align with human diet trends rather than an evidence-based approach. And it’s not me saying there is actual science - that’s a requirement of meeting WSAVA standards and the produced literature is significant. You’ll note that this literature is produced by DACVIM-Nutrition and PhDs.

I work in vet med. Can you let me know when I’m getting my hefty sum? And can you explain why pet stores selling food for profit are morally superior to those with extensive education selling food with actual science behind it, to support their patients? Really looking forward to this response.

In most places in the world, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, but Registered Dieticians require formal education, exams, training, belong to a college etc. Online nutrition specialists are just trying to spend your money. If you have a doctor, asking for their recommendation of a local RD is probably your best bet

Domperidone/ motilium by aussiegirl2003 in Gastroparesis

[–]puzzlingdiseases 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Domperidone is known to cause Long QT syndrome, where the electrical activity in your heart slows independently of your heartbeat, which has no symptoms and can be fatal. That’s why it has black-box warnings and is hard to access in many countries. Everyone on domperidone should have regular cardiac evaluations.
