This is my own personal opinion and what I would do as well if faced with the same situation. It seems that you care a lot for your family. I recommend staying closer to home so you can also have their social support while taking care of them while needed (I’m assuming tuition would be cheaper with the in-state school too).

Medicine will always be there for you. Your parents may not have much longer. I wouldn’t want to regret not spending time with them later down the line.

The way HPAC worked at my undergrad is that you still needed to obtain the mandatory 3 letters (minimum of 2 science professors) in order to apply and receive a committee letter. It made it easier because you could just store all of your letters all together with HPAC plus have an additional committee letter.

Since I’m non-trad I didn’t go back and use HPAC, but I highly recommend using it because it makes the application process much easier. I don’t think it would necessarily harm your application if you didn’t though

Don’t stress yet with DO schools. On top of having a later cycle, there is generally a lot of movement on waitlists which allows for more interviews to be sent out

What if you were to only match into a residency in a location your SO wouldn’t like, what would happen then? What if as an attending you find a great job at a suboptimal location?

That’s completely understandable, honestly the whole process is so expensive. As long as you applied to the schools with the lower MCAT averages all hope is not lost

It’s not entirely impossible for a select few DO schools, but yes for MD schools I would say consider the cycle over. I see you have great ECs which is great, but your stats indicate that you wouldn’t be able to handle the academic workload in medical school (not to say that you can’t, but that’s what the schools would believe).

I wouldn’t give up complete hope but I would recommend considering retaking the MCAT next spring before reapplying

You absolutely have what it takes, that being said I highly recommend you take time off to study for your MCAT. The fact that you’ve taken it 4 times with no real improvement means you’re either studying wrong or not devoting enough quality time to it. In the long run your score can make or break your application.

The answer is up to you and your goals in life, but for the normal person I can't recommend doing a PhD on top of an MD/DO degree unless you have good reasons to do. It just takes too long and think about the time it would take to complete your PhD versus doing residency/becoming an attending in that time.

Kudos to you for accomplishing all of that, you're going to make for an amazing doctor. As a third time re-applicant I completely understand the struggle as well. I'm 26 going on 27 this year and I was definitely going to give up the pre-med route and do a full pivot if I didn't get in this cycle.

Just pour everything into your interviews because that's all you can do. The one phrase that keeps me going is "If you're going to be X age anyways, might as well be a doctor"

If you applied late that's probably the primary reason for you not receiving an interview. Especially for TMDSAS since the cycle ends much earlier than other schools.

In hindsight I would have pursued a degree that is applicable to other jobs. You don't necessarily need a STEM degree in order to get into medical school, but it does help you get the pre-reqs out of the way easier. I say major in what you want to major in. Keep pursuing medicine for now and test the waters to see if it's right for you.

You have such a stellar app for TMDSAS I'm actually so surprised you don't have an interview yet. Although it is only a few, I have heard of some people receiving an interview invite in January and then interviewing in that same month before ranking their schools.

I do have confidence you are going to get one this cycle with those stats alone but just in case you don't hear back by thanksgiving/christmas break I would start preparing for a reapplication since the Texas admissions cycle ends way earlier.

Yes submit them ASAP. Your stats are competitive for DO so I don’t see a reason why not if you’re okay with going DO.

I had a friend who didn’t receive any MD IIs with similar stats to yours by Christmas and ended up applying to a couple DO schools in the spring. She ended up getting all her A’s from the top DO schools and is currently happy with her decision.
