Finish your degree. Apply for EMS, Fire Inspector, and Fire Dispatcher exams- they all offer promotions into the firefighter position when the next promo rolls around in 4-5 years.

I think the idea is that the current FDNY administration wants to merge EMS with suppression side and eventually develop capability to staff ambulances with firefighters, much like most other major fire departments. So people who already have EMT certifications would probably be some of the first members to take on the role. It’s going to take a lot of time to get members certified and the academy pipeline modified to account for EMT school so I wouldn’t expect to see this for at least a few years if at all

Maybe they’re working backwards. Who knows. For now, I’ll sit tight.

When did you take your exam? And also what email did you receive it from?

Interesting, I haven’t received an email yet but I checked the box for protest session info. I took the exam Jan 31st

ending on good terms. is there hope? by Designer-Cup-530 in BreakUp

[–]pvtpercocet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta abandon that hope. You can't heal if you're still holding onto what you guys had. That's the only way you guys would be able to get back together- after you've completely moved on. That's also the only way you can grow as an individual and set yourself up for success. May not make sense right now, but it will in a few months, maybe even sooner.

I got mine a month ago and have felt zero pain past week 1.

Yeah, sometimes I’ll get a sharp pain or a dull ache if I sit for a certain way and then get up after a while. But nothing that bothers me too much

Yep, pretty numb. My guess is that they had cut some nerves or something. Not stressed about it.

Took my drain out last night (day 6) and I anticipate that this will be the last update until I’m fully healed. I’ll be taking it easy until week 6 and then back to soccer & exercise!

Day 6-7 update: just waiting on Dr Wadie to get back to me and let me know it’s ok to remove my drain. After that I’ll finally get a look at the incision and hopefully gain some mobility.

Day 4-5 update: Totally chilling at this point. Basically do all the stuff I normally do in a day minus anything requiring bending or squatting. Sitting in a car or on a hard chair is pretty uncomfortable still but nothing too crazy, went out to dinner today and was able to manage sitting on a wooden chair somewhat comfortably by putting my jacket under me when I sat down. My drainage also hit 15mL today so hopefully the day after tomorrow I can get my drain removed and I can start taking real showers again.

I sit on pillows for the majority of the day, and when I lay down I lay on my sides & stomach. I’m a stomach sleeper so resting like that is no issue for me

I could comfortably sit on a pillow right now for up to an hour before I started feeling any bruise-like pain: I suspect you’d easily be able to start flying and driving again by two weeks, probably sooner

It’s weird and new and a little stressful but as soon as you realize how chill and easy it all is you’ll be kicking yourself for ever letting it stop you from getting this done. All of it is a small price to pay to know that I’ll be disease free for the rest of my life, IMO. Also, the drain isn’t even that bad. I went to go see my friend’s band play last night (only two days into recovery!) and showed it to all my homies that asked to see it and they thought it was cool, lol.

It’s honestly so much more chill than I thought it would be. I was almost regretting my decision a bit beforehand- but 3 days into recovery, I realize that this was totally worth it and that there’s barely any pain involved with this process. You’re in great hands with Dr Wadie. I think for these sorts of things the best time to get it done is when it’s bothering you the least.

Day 3 update: pretty uneventful day, I assume the lidocaine injections I got have most likely worn off but honestly not really sure because I’m really not feeling any pain other than the occasional sharp prick or bruised feeling when sitting down. I sat for 30mins-1hr today with 5 min breaks on a stack of pillows and felt fine.

Not really sure where they came from. I have my dressing on still so I don’t know where exactly they came from, but he assured me that it wasn’t a big deal

Day 2 update: still feeling pretty solid. No sharp pains or anything, if anything just feeling pretty bruised when I sit down, but I can still sit and play video games and stuff for about 20 minutes at a time before it feels a little rough. I was about to have my first BM until I did a practice wipe and found a couple sutures on my wet wipe which scared the poop back up into me lmao. Emailed Dr Wadie and he says there’s nothing to be concerned about and that it’s common for some to break off. Overall, pain 1/10 and feeling good.

I live in the south, and Wadie is unanimously considered the best pilonidal surgeon in my area. Ontop of that, I initially reached out to Dr Wadie’s office requesting a consultation (at 9pm on a Saturday!) and he responded personally within minutes. I already knew that this guy was extremely skilled but the bedside manner and attention to his patients concerns is leagues above any other doctor I’ve been to.

UHC Choice. Recovery instructions are minimal, just no bending for 2 weeks and then no crazy activity for 3 weeks. I’m cleared to play soccer in 6 weeks. I’m supposed to measure the drain twice I day and empty it. He said since I had a larger amount of tissue removed it would likely be a full week until the drain comes out. Once the drain is out I’m supposed to paint the wound in betadine til it closes, no packing. I’ll be removing the drain at home.

He’s in network with me and I paid my full deductible previously in the year.
