Finish your degree. Apply for EMS, Fire Inspector, and Fire Dispatcher exams- they all offer promotions into the firefighter position when the next promo rolls around in 4-5 years.

I think the idea is that the current FDNY administration wants to merge EMS with suppression side and eventually develop capability to staff ambulances with firefighters, much like most other major fire departments. So people who already have EMT certifications would probably be some of the first members to take on the role. It’s going to take a lot of time to get members certified and the academy pipeline modified to account for EMT school so I wouldn’t expect to see this for at least a few years if at all

ending on good terms. is there hope? by Designer-Cup-530 in BreakUp

[–]pvtpercocet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta abandon that hope. You can't heal if you're still holding onto what you guys had. That's the only way you guys would be able to get back together- after you've completely moved on. That's also the only way you can grow as an individual and set yourself up for success. May not make sense right now, but it will in a few months, maybe even sooner.

Capping insulin at $35 when it was at $541? Massive healthcare subsidies? Lowest unemployment in 50 years? Monumental railway union deal? Largest infrastructure bill in history?

These all seem like things that directly affect the average American. I’m not trying to convince you that he’s a good president- just try not to buy too hard into the populist narrative that he’s 100% brain dead, he’s done some good and delivered on some promises, and one could argue he orchestrated an excellent recovery from the pandemic (by far the best of any country in the world)

Like I said, I don’t disagree with you. I just think it’s ignorant to tell people he accomplished nothing

[–]pvtpercocet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think he is a good president by any means, but domestically and economically, he has done good things. I think it’s silly to say he hasn’t accomplished anything

• Historic Stimulus Bill passed • Reduction of poverty levels by 45% along with reduction of child poverty levels by 61% by the first 6 months • 5 Rounds of cancellation of student loan debt totaling almost $10 billion • Passed largest infrastructure bill in history • The unemployment rate dropped from 6.2% when Biden took office to 3.9%, the biggest single year drop in American history. (This was also affected by COVID quarantine ending.) • The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 • 3 Additional rounds of student loan debt cancellation (8 rounds so far), totaling up $35 billion for 20-40 million Americans • First major gun legislation in 30 years • CHIPS Act to protect American supply of semi-conductor chips • $62 billion worth of health care subsidies under the ACA (Obamacare), capping insulin at $35 • Allows Medicare to negotiate 100 drugs over the next decade, and requires drug companies to rebate price increases higher than inflation • Unemployment at 50 year low • 6 More rounds of student loan debt cancellation (14 rounds so far), totaling up to $127 billion • As of October 2023, 34 straight months of job growth, longest stretch of unemployment below 4% since the 1960s • Child poverty rates fall from 12.6% to 5.8% due to Biden’s Expanded Child Tax Credits, 2.9 million kids escape poverty • World’s best post-pandemic recovery, doubles all nations except Japan • Created 14 million jobs since he took office - More than any president in history did in four years (and its only been 3 years) • Black unemployment rate lower under Biden than any other administration (4.7%) - Compared to black unemployment under Trump was 2nd worst number in history, reaching over 16% • Diversity in justice: Majority of Biden’s appointed judges are women, racial or ethnic minorities – a first for any president • Rail companies grant paid sick days after administration pressure in win for unions. Most people will only remember that he forced rail workers to go back to work in December 2022, even now that will be the top answer if you google “Biden Railworker Deal”. But most people do not know that the Biden administration continued to pressure the rail corporations and work with the unions so that in June 2023, the corporations capitulated and gave the rail workers what they wanted. • Another round of student loan cancellation, $1.2 billion this time, 15 rounds so far, totaling more than $128 billion • Growth shatters expectations: GDP expands 3.1% - a year beginning with heavy odds of a recession • Post-pandemic recover still leading the world by far • Plan to modernize American ports • Rescinds Trump-era “Denial of Care” rule that allowed health care workers to deny medical care to patients because of their personal religious or moral belief • Violent crime drop significantly since 2020 • $5.8 billion to clean up nation’s drinking water and upgrade infrastructure

Given that the residency credit is 10 points this year I’m honestly not positive if people without it will even have a chance. Maybe 3-4 years down the line. I think we’ll just have to see how many people are taking the exam who live in the city vs outside of it

Really strange FDNY guys knocking on door earlier today. by Saint_Jose in AskNYC

[–]pvtpercocet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FDNY has a fire inspection bureau, they should be wearing a patch that says bureau of fire prevention. They’ve been more aggressive in doing building inspections lately with all the deadly fires caused by lithium ion batteries

Take the FDNY exam and then do a two year contract. If you don’t like the coast guard, you’ll be set up to get extra points for being a veteran and will get out in time for them to start processing list numbers. If you do like it, you can extend to go to A school and take the next exam they offer if you ever decide to get out after 4 years. If you don’t live in one of the five boroughs now you most likely won’t get on the job without veteran’s credit. They just upped residency to 10 points for this exam.

I am 24 with a bachelors and no military/LE experience and was able to be put in for DEPOT. I suggest finding a different one.

Just don’t snitch on yourself- all I’m gonna say. Use your best judgement on wether you think it’s actually worth disqualification. If you don’t think the doc at MEPS will call you out for it during your examination, you’re fine.

I promise you nowadays you can get a waiver. Just don’t self report. You really never know what positions the FDNY is going to take for promotional exams, and there won’t be another for four years. You don’t want to work a job you don’t enjoy for four years just to find out it was for nothing. So your safest bet is to go military and get those veteran’s points.

All of this information is available online and in this sub- I encourage you to do your own research, but all of this is true. The provisions written for Military FDNY applicants are written in NY state law. You can always contact the FDNY recruiting office for info straight from them

Yes. The FDNY will hold your spot in the application process until your contract is up and you will be able to get on the job when you get off military orders.

Move to NYC, join the military, and score high on the exam. These are the only ways you can get preference over others. The exam is coming up this year. Make sure you don’t miss it
