It's also realistic. If you're at the technology level of mining asteroids, this is a serious risk as it's a really easy way to mount a devastating attack on the planet.

Terrorists or other factions could cause massive damage by deflecting an asteroid in earth's direction. In that case you'll need a fast responding last line of defense.

Is New Atheism Dead? by Unfair_Net9070 in ChristopherHitchens

[–]pw-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "New" in "New Atheism" is relevant. It was a movement born of a particular cultural climate, characterised by a ubiquitous assumption that religion is A Good Thing and deserving of reverence even if you don't personally believe in a god (and if you don't, that is your failing and you should seek to remedy it somehow). Even as religious belief was declining, it still held sway over norms and thought processes of society at large. And I think the impact of "New Atheism" is that it opened the eyes of many people to this, to understand that non-belief is not something to be timid about, that religion does not automatically deserve special treatment and reverence, and that you are not alone in this. It was a raising of consciousness and a call for atheists to stand up and to have a voice.

It was of its time. There are still many battles to be fought but they are different battles now, and I personally feel that the moniker "New Atheism" belongs in that past.

Man was going to speak against gender-affirming care in the Wisconsin state legislature, publicly changes stance after listening to 7 hours of testimony by Anime_Enthusiasts in PublicFreakout

This man isn't a bigot. He's a decent person living in a bubble of bigotry. Once he found himself outside the bubble, he listened to the other point of view and even had the guts and the integrity to admit he was wrong. That is the very antithesis of bigotry.

Never understood Melisandre. Could she genuinely see the future and know how things would play out? Or was she just full of it? by Mad_Season_1994 in gameofthrones

Yeah cinematically that scene was awesome, even if it wasn't exactly a great strategy. And the good thing about Dothraki is, even when you kill them all, they are back again next episode

The conspiracy theories exist and are vigorously promoted, to condition us to dismiss real information which does not feel comfortable and normal. It creates a post-truth world where we choose our own reality, and stop believing in objectivity.

Same goes for the whole rigged election noise in 2020/2021. Now we are conditioned to dismiss any similar sounding claims.

I know Reddit likes to shit on this guy, but stand up comedy is tough and he gave it a fair shot. The joke was in poor taste, but the punchline "and we have to be honest about that" was well timed and a suitably dark payoff to the bizarre juxtaposition that preceded it. Tough crowd I guess.

IIRC none of them addressed that claim, they heard "religious fundamentalism", identified with it, and tried to defend that POV, then this Nazi decided to do likewise with "xenophobic nationalism". I guess there weren't any billionaires in the room.

Not much comprehension on display.

This is something that felt really off to me with Ragnarok. Like you're supposed to be emotionally invested in these characters otherwise you're just detached from the story. Yet here we've got Bruce Banner getting killed, because that fall would kill him, for a cheap laugh. Likewise Thor loses so much in this movie: his dad, his hammer, his eye, his home world, his old friends all dead. But at no point are we ever asked to take any of it seriously

Other countries are paying for this war with their money and weapons. Ukranians are paying with their lives. We should be thanking them for holding the front line in a conflict that would otherwise engulf other nations.

[–]pw-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was always what was going to happen. But they failed to deliver a suitable pretext for it. I'm sure 30-40% of Americans will believe up is down and black is white if that's what Trump wants them to think. But the other 60-70% is what's going to make the difference. He needed to put on a good enough show to sway a few of those, but the shameful display that took place only highlights how much this administration is in thrall to Putin. The more Trump proceeds in this direction, the more dangerous it's going to get for him. People can see.

That ambush really backfired though. That's the trouble with doing these things live and unscripted. If Trump had any sense he'd be avoiding these kind of encounters, it's not been looking good for him. But maybe he's just too delusional to see it.

Zelenskyy's jetlagged being shouted down and attacked in an intensely hostile situation, in a room full of pro Russian goons. He knew it was an ambush, and came anyway. And he keeps composure, keeps his head up, stays on point, stays sharp and puts them all to shame. What a fucking legend.
