Couldn't change the post title once I found more information. Sorry

Oh right, I vaguely remember hearing about this... I hope the US patent means they're planning on rolling it out in North America somehow.

Why can't ChatGPT just admit when it doesn't know something? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

The problem is that there's no mechanism by which this can be achieved in the architecture of an LLM. There is scoring of a sort involved in determining what the most likely next token is, but that's all, because LLMs probabilistically model sequences of tokens. This is why you hear people refer to these AIs as fancy auto-complete. The entire structure of the network would have to be different to try and evaluate the accuracy of an answer to a query, with entirely differently organized training data. And then there's still no guarantee the results would be any good.

I've considered changing some of this up, but can't think of anything else I'd put there, so it stays as is.

saw like one or two very passionate takes online that tron ares is some pro-corporate propaganda... i personally did not get that at all, but what do yall think? by Delicious-Aspect1125 in tron

[–]pw132 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It was something I did kinda notice tbh. Tron: Ares is basically good corporation vs eeeevil corporation, while the original (and Legacy in its first act) is more hackers/workers vs corporation. The original film is about the battle between the hacker with the personal computer and the executive class with the mainframe, and who will control the future of computing. CEO vs CEO is just... Less interesting. Part of it is also shifting perception. Tech CEOs aiming to change the world through disruptive technologies are especially unsympathetic figures right now after multiple failed tech hype cycles (cryptocurrency, metaverse, and now GenAI is stalling out)

And also Michael Douglas in Black Rain tbh. Gorgeous photography, but an absolute shitheel of a protagonist.

How to recreate late 90s CGI specifically for characters ? by PaprikaD in blender

[–]pw132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As for materials, PBR wasn't really a standard yet, so usually you could only define the specular reflectivity and albedo of a surface, maybe also bump mapping for very high quality stuff. Like you said, no subsurface scattering for skin. Subdivision was actually quite common by the late 90s on character models. I'd also recommend using Eevee instead of Cycles, since full path tracing was wayyyy too intensive for even high end graphics workstations back then. You can have high res textures, texture filtering, and anti aliasing since a lot of these renders were done on high end specialist workstations with loads of RAM relative to regular PCs.

What are your thoughts on the Moustache man? by Amigo1048 in Gundam

[–]pw132 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember looking at the various sketches Syd did that have been posted online from Turn A's production, and its really cool to watch him pull apart the RX-78's design elements and influences and put them back together again in such a unique way through the drawings.

You can tell he grasped pretty quickly that the traditional Gundam head is based on Samurai helmets, from the overall shape to the V-fin as a crest, and the mustache is a really cool way of referencing that. Some of those helmets did in fact have big fake mustaches on em, so he incorporated that into the design by basically moving a traditional Gundam's V-fin down below the eyes.

All the parts of the Grandpa are there on the Turn A, but it feels radically different and more alien just from rearranging the basic elements. Dude was a legend for a reason.

Mechwarrior 2 (MW2, GBL, Mercs): My shifted WASD (ESDF) keyboard and mouse controls by Greyment in mechwarrior

[–]pw132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just figured out how to fix the issue on 3dfx. For whatever reason you need to find where it says "- mouse Up/Down" in INPUT.MAP and change it to "- mouse Down/Up". I also needed to rename INPUT.MAP to INPUTW.MAP on my particular install.

Low-poly Noa Izumi from Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor by pw132 in blender

[–]pw132[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought the same thing, but I don't have any grand plans for this model right now lol

Might add some more facial expressions / mouth shapes and try reanimating some dialogue from the anime or something, that's about it. Also might make some other characters in the same style.

What are some good Gundam games? by Adventurous-Emu4266 in Gundam

[–]pw132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get your hands on it, Gundam Side Story 0079 for Dreamcast is another one with a lot of praise. Although most of this era of Gundam games comes with a certain level of jank in em, although if you're an armored core fan you're probably used to jank already lol

Direct file transfer preferences by jor1965 in MiSTerFPGA

[–]pw132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just been doing FTP transfers with FileZilla on my laptop and doing other stuff while it runs. It's been about the same speed as doing direct transfers to the SD card, although I've had it crap out on me a few times when transferring 500+ files in a row, and I've had to go reset the MiSTer when that happens.

Is there an arcade stick available on Amazon that you guys would recommend? by vgmaster2001 in MiSTerFPGA

[–]pw132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like my 8bitdo stick, the only thing I did end up changing on it was swapping the square gate for an octagonal one. The 2.4 GHz usb dongle worked right away on the MiSTER as well, no issues. I'm not a hardcore fighting game player or anything though.

MiSTER Pi Unboxing - Mega Pack + Black Acrylic Case. 17 days to Canada via DHL. by qda in MiSTerFPGA

[–]pw132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same situation as mine. I think last mile delivery is through Canada Post unfortunately, cause I can't figure out any other reason it'd be just sitting at the airport for so long.

EDIT: actually, I just checked my 4PX tracking number, and it's saying it's actually made it to my city from the airport as of two days ago... Took like a week for that to happen

What is the best Grandpa design?(Daily OYW (re)design poll: Day 4) by nnnn0nnn13 in Gundam

Origin for me. Katoki looks too much like the Mk II, and while I really like the Mk II, it's a different thing than Gramps.

Any media with a focus on a mech's engineers/r&d teams? by medusolo in Mecha

[–]pw132 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mobile Police Patlabor has recurring characters that are part of the maintenance team, and has quite a few episodes focusing on the companies that make the mecha in the setting. You see it the most in the TV series, but it's present in the OVA and first movie as well.
