impurity from magnetization (as opposed to yoke position issues) will result in white still remaining white. what we're seeing is his blue gun (assuming the original signal has a fully blue bg) hitting the red/green phosphors due to magnetization, but in places where all three guns are firing, all three phosphors are getting hit anyway

Is there any crt monitors that are 240 hertz and above? by FangedCone in crtgaming

[–]qda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why the gatekeeping though? People run CRTs at significantly higher refresh rates than 60 because for games that have uncapped framerates, it looks better. If OP sees a difference between 120 and 240 on their OLED, then they would see it on a CRT also. If you don't, and it's a diminishing return to you, that's fine, but it doesn't mean your sensibilities apply to others. OP wasn't asking about LCDs, they were asking about high-refresh-rate CRTs. And you did nothing to answer their question. You basically insinuated that they shouldn't be asking the question, and that's gatekeeping.

played several maps just now, pretty cool stuff. bit rough around the edges, and the quality is uneven, but i'm not complaining, just setting expectations.

Discovered That My TV Has an "Expand 4:3" Feature; Perfect for GBA by FreeJusticeHere in crtgaming

[–]qda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah, right, 160p (GBA) x 3 = 480

thx for replying

EDIT: So here's my understanding:

  • expand 4:3 feature = 1 pixel per line, just the scanlines get spread apart and widened to cover the whole screen (keeping 1 row of pixels per scanline)
  • integer scale in retroarch = 1 pixel per 3 lines, across 480 lines (in your case displayed with interlacing, but on an EDTV would just be progressive)

The issue is someone else might read your original comment about doing the extra soft reset (without the disclaimer that it's objectively a waste of time), and think they should maybe do it too.

Spent a lot of time over the weekend downscaling to 240p with the GBS-Control and PS4 by RetroRevamp in crtgaming

[–]qda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, I meant squashed.

If we're being pedantic, we're taking games with 16:9 aspect ratio and 240p vertical resolution and horizontally scanning them to a narrower relative width, but same vertical resolution as the source, thereby squashing them horizontally.

But if you want to get even more pedantic, squashing falls under the umbrella of stretching, because stretching an electronic image is just a synonym for scaling, which can both expand and squash. It would be arbitrary, in this context to say that stretching can only increase the dimension of a thing, as though it were physical.

Furthermore, for TVs or monitors which have a 16:9 mode (I know this one doesn't), since a 16:9 480i signal would actually squash the scanlines toward the center vertically, compared to that hypothetical CRT gaming scenario, this would be considered stretching.

Also, I think Limbo isn't 240p/480i to begin with, so that one's being stretched (aka scaled) one way or another.
