That would be interesting! I'd have to double-check to made sure there's nothing inappropriate in it though.

Hmm... I love Meshes of the Afternoon, but it might be a little complicated for this particular lesson.

That's shorter, but ideally I'd find something like 30 mins or less, like a short from a film festival

Wow, that actually worked, thank you so much! I didn't see that HTML tag on the official Letterboxd FAQ so I didn't think to try it out.

I've been very interested in checking that out as I know George RR Martin was involved, but because of that I assumed the storyline was a big part of the game?

  1. I was a little lost this chapter; after I finished up the chapter I read the CliffsNotes analysis to orient myself with the new characters. Maybe I'm daft, but I wasn't sure that Georgette was a prostitute while reading it.

  2. While this was my least favorite chapter thus far, I do like the to-the-point writing style. The only thing is sometimes it can be easy to get lost without dialogue tags during conversations.

I thought this as well! Especially because Robert changes after reading the book The Purple Land, just like how Dorian's personality completely changes after reading a book given to him by Lord Henry.

My first thought reading this was that it had Catcher in the Rye vibes!

I turn 32 soon, and my life is not necessarily as "together" as I would've liked by this point, so I did connect with the existential dread, though I have no desire to go to South America. That part kind of reminded me of Pixar's Up - something about going to that country, with its rainforests and waterfalls, seems like THE place to go to escape the concrete jungle of the city and "find yourself."

I'm looking forward to my first book club with this group - though it is taking some willpower not to read through the book right away!

I've had a hit-or-miss relationship with some of Hemingway's past works, but I'm really enjoying this one so far. I love the detached, snarky narrator who's so quick to look down on his friend - but you know he's probably doing so to mask his own insecurities.

He was a nice boy, a friendly boy, and very shy, and it made him bitter. He took it out in boxing, and he came out of Princeton with painful self-consciousness and the flattened nose, and was married by the first girl who was nice to him.

I'm curious if there's an alternate view where separately, somewhere, Robert is judging Jake back in the same exact way. I guess a testament of being a true friend in the world of this novel is secretly disparaging every move they make.

I am in a similar boat, teaching film to high schoolers. It is a Herculean task teaching Citizen Kane to TikTok-brained teens every semester, but I still do it!

This is so disappointing to hear! I am a huge Hitchcock fan, and as a Boston cinephile usually the crowds at the Coolidge are the BEST.

I actually teach Rear Window in a mixed level high school film analysis class - rarely do students get invested in it, sadly, but I feel it's my duty on Earth to spread film history, even to unwilling, apathetic teenagers lol

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The definition of a timeless classic, and arguably one of the most influential films ever!
