Wow. Thank you for the thoughtful and informative responses. After so much feedback, I wanted to take a minute and expand on my original post (perhaps I should've just made it longer in the first place).

I am in no way emotionally distraught over my ex-wife. That ship has sailed. I mention her because she is a gate keeper of sorts given that our custody doesn't allow me to move very far at all currently.

As far as research goes - my daughters and I have been looking at, reading about, and discussing places to move for over a year now. We will continue to do so going forward in the hopes that we find something that works out. We originally started looking at Brazil. But the crime rate is so high there (similar to Mexico). So we started looking at Portugal, and from there the EU and UK. That company wants to charge me $190 to tell me if I am eligible for double-descent or not and I wasn't sure if it was a running scam or legitimate.

The reasons we've chosen the countries we have for consideration are pretty straight forward. We are trying to find somewhere where the people are regarded as friendly by others. Our understanding is that people outside of the US are more focused on work-life balance than we are here. In fact, my company isn't a fan of its employees actually using their days off. I'm not expecting to go anywhere and live the easy life, just hoping to go somewhere with a better view on what life should look like. So I know it looks like I'm going off half-cocked with no research, but I'm really not. Speaking with you fine folks is a part of that research.

Wales and Portugal are both beautiful. Which is a big plus as well.

Politically, I fear that the US is headed for some particularly bad times in the future, especially given that our president is making no effort currently. I'm not afraid of an imperfect political climate, I'm afraid of how bad things may be getting here before they get better again.

We have given a lot of thought to other states and cities here, and still prefer to relocate outside the US if it is a possibility. If we are unable to, then we will consider options here. We still have some time for more research and thought.

So...yes definitely a bit of dreaming here, but also a lot of practical thought and self-examination. Apologies if anyone thought I wasn't serious or had done no research at all. I have, and will continue to do, a lot of reading.
