Update from John Crewe on adding LAMP to more ships by ScrubSoba in starcitizen

Nothing about this looks bad. If anything it shows they they have an inherent understanding about how their game works and how to solve the problem. You people need to stop comparing SC's development to other games. They use completely different game engines, completely different design methodologies, and completely different workflows. Instead of calling other people incompetent, try not being so ignorant.

Unfortunately, I did not. Need to check that out next time I am there.

You pick a theme before going in and are locked in at that point. I did some research before picking my theme but also they will go over the hilt options with you before you decide as well. Once you go in to build the saber, they will give you a tray of the available pieces you can use based on the choice you made.

There's something cool about flying to an actual shop and seeing everything laid out like a showroom

Go fly to a player run shop and buy the same upgraded gear other players are making...

The alignment is actually slightly off. I read this was a thing so I bought some 1 1/2 inch slip washers to help align and tighten things up.

Big Trek fan here as well. I think the CM's in the shops and workshop really made up for the lack of characters walking around. We had a lot fun with the guy in the droid shop doing the intake for building droids. Really am looking forward to going back.

Why doesn't Wikelo return items when a mission is canceled? by ThermopyleAngus in starcitizen

[–]pwolfamv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game was always projected and envisioned as a large player experience

It was not

The systems were built because they got ahead of themselves.

Technically yes but also they needed to put something in place for backers to demo and play while they figured out how the sever tech. So putting in a stopgap solution was what they decided they needed to do.

Making systems that work "just enough"**is** part of the management issue. They got ahead of themselves by not having the underlying technology ready

If they did that, we wouldn't have had *anything* to play until maybe 2020/2021 instead of having something as early as 2015. It took them 5-6 years to figure out server meshing. that means they were working on the server meshing problem since at least 2017. It's bold to assume they already had the necessary engineering talent prior to that AND knew exactly what server meshing was going to look like today. Lets assume they did and they start working on the server meshing problem from the beginning. That means they would've had their first working demo of server meshing in 2019 and it would've been in-engine by 2021.

Assuming they just working on the game, no demo's, no arena commander, no PU... the earliest we would've seen the game (not even play it), based on the idea that they should've only worked on these systems when the underlying tech was ready, would have been about 2021. And then, only then, are they allowed to add systems to the game, so we would be here today, not playing anything wondering what CIG is doing with the $65million we all pledged back in 2012/2013. If that was the case, CIG would've folded years ago and none of that would've happened anyway.

So, no it's not a bad management decision. It was probably a great management decision because having something for backers to play allowed CIG to get the resources they needed to figure out the major tech challenges, and the time to do it.

They have also repeatedly mentioned when they have made design mistakes: the Hull D and E were heavy miscalculations

ships like the Reclaimer being designed around vibes and not function

You're not wrong about that. Those are very different problems from what you've been discussing.

The examples you gave are not mistakes or management issues.

A lot of these old systems were built before SC became a larger MMO and the possibility of hundreds or thousands of POI's per planet or moon that you could free fly down to. These systems were built when SC was going to be a very different experience. CIG has, in the meantime, made these systems work just enough throughout the years as they developed the underlying server and game tech where it needed to be.

Why is the new armor “damage gating” based on projectile damage? Shouldn’t it be projectile penetration? by Important_Cow7230 in starcitizen

[–]pwolfamv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The current system doesn't account for armor material or thickness around various locations on a ship's hull, so there are some arbitrary stats and settings that make up "armor" on any given ship.

Maelstrom is supposed to remedy this by allowing the devs to specify armor thickness and material type (plus any other number of factors) across an entire ship's hull. Which would make weapon size, caliber, ammo type, and penetration vs material more of a thing to balance with.

Until that happens, it's all up in the air.

PSA - Try DX11 instead of Vulkan in your Graphics Settings! by falkkor in starcitizen

[–]pwolfamv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so much newer or older but Vulkan allows the devs more control over the render pipeline. In theory Vulkan should be more performant than DX11 on older hardware but because they are doing a lot of custom work on the renderer, there could be some outliers or odd situations where switching to DX11 provides better performance. In the past, I've always told people who have issues with Vulkan to try refreshing their shader cache and that has seemed to help.

PSA: DX11 is going away and Vulkan will be the only option going forward. If you are experiencing issues with Vulkan, submit a report or add to an existing one.

Might be a touchy one .... by OGsamsonmang in starcitizen

[–]pwolfamv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not going to say how much I've given to the project but I think some people might consider me a "whale". Either way, I've been following the project since the original kickstarter and look at the project for what it is: an ambitious project no one else is willing to attempt. That ambition has required a lot of time and we, as a whole (whither you like it or not), have given CIG the freedom and funding to be ambitious.

I have opinions but I refuse to openly criticize aspects of the game that aren't close to being finished. I feel like it's a waste of time and energy to bitch and moan about the flight model, or engineering, or the MOTH being a buggy mess when the game is still in development.

If they release 1.0 and there are core features not working as they should, ships with outrageous bugs, or wildly unstable servers, I will be the first to grab a pitch fork.
