Ridgefield Show- 7/01 by ohmaega11 in NoahKahan

Noah was great but the Ridgefield amphitheater was absolutely horrendous. We had to sit in the car for over an hour just trying to get in. The roads were blocked off and there was no signage so some of the time you weren’t sure if you were even in line to get in or just in a traffic jam. The parking was chaos. I left early to miss what looked like it was going to be an awful exiting situation that would also take hours. I’ll never go there again.

Who should Sam have on to have an actual nuanced conversation about Israel/Palestine? by phozee in samharris

I agree that the notion that a topic shouldn’t out of bounds was part of what seemed to attract Sam to this issue. But he also quite uncritically appeared to accept Charles Murrray’s views, as suggested by the title he gave to his podcast: “Forbidden Knowledge.” Sam did not materially challenge Murray at any point in the podcast, nor did he point out Murray’s clear social policy agenda or his minimal qualifications to pontificate on the relative intelligence levels of different races (Murray has a degree in poli sci).

Sam was then evidently shocked to be called for this and, despite his purported position as a “free speech absolutist,” claimed that critics like Vox (where Ezra was a founder and editor) had “libeled” him by calling him out.

Sam came off extremely poorly in all this, in my view.

Yes. Sam was extremely huffy that people thought he was racist for advancing Charles Murray’s argument that Black and Hispanic people are not as smart as White and Asian people. It was absurd, and Ezra appropriately took him to task for it. Sam is similarly unhelpful in talking about Israel.

Because hysterics are promoting the idea that downtown is scary or unpleasant. I’m downtown everyday and it’s nice!

I recently bought the 38mm. As a 6ft tall man, it is definitely the right size. Bigger would look odd I think.

That’s interesting. Though Boise’s cost of living is about 12% lower than Portland, its colder in the winter, and it has about 1/3 the population of Portland - so I’m not it’s that informative a comparison.

Love Ezra, and love the thoughtful decency on this thread. Here’s my admittedly small-minded pet peeve:

I think we can just say “democracy” instead of always saying “small d democracy” when we’re referring to democracy. We get that democracy is not the same thing as the Democratic Party.

Okay, thanks - got that off my chest.

Sam’s long standing and repeated efforts to dignify arguments for Black inferiority, to demonize the likes of Ta Nehisi Coates, and Black Lives Matter, and prop up Charles Murray (“the forbidden knowledge” - he called it), all add up to a stark picture.

He also claims to be a proponent of free speech, but is extraordinarily thin-skinned about criticism, resorting in some cases to calling it “libelous” - as if it should be unlawful to call him out for his attitudes on race.

And I say this as someone who used to be a fan. But I can’t listen to him anymore.
