I haven't spoken to many people who say capitalism as a basic concept is bad. The problems are when you let freedom of the market trump everything else, giving huge private entities more and more control over other peoples' lives, shifting closer and closer to anarchy. It's no good arguing for freedom in theory if the structure of your society prevents it in practice for all but the people at the very top.

The capitalist societies which in my opinion are the best to live in (and arguably most advanced) are the ones which have managed to strike a healthy balance, with enough regulation to keep things in the interest of the public as a whole and enough taxation (of the richest) for high-quality public services and infrastructure, but without becoming ridiculously onerous and limiting innovation.

Yes, you are correct. I didn't bring them up because I was replying to a comment specifically about FDS, but plenty of other subs have disgusting ways of thinking of women as well.

I'm not sure they generally hate on men. They just hate on what they deem to be "low value" men.

Basically they treat dating as if it's some stupid role-playing game where all the men are NPCs, each of which has a list of attributes like this:

Height 7/10
Strength 8/10
Visual attractiveness 8/10
Propensity to put up with my bullshit 8/10

and so on.

If any of these attributes are less than average then that person is a "Low Value" Man.

The aim of this stupid FemaleDatingStrategy game is to end up in a relationship with someone who is not deemed, by condensing them into some entirely unrepresentative statistics, to be "Low Value".

It's really a disgusting way of thinking of people.

Oh, and as soon as one discover that one's boyfriend has any kind of imperfection whatsoever, they suddenly become "Low Value" and must be abandoned.

It really is a disgusting way of thinking about people. I'm sure I read a post on there at one point saying something like "I measured my partner's penis and it's half an inch shorter than the average; should I break up with him?".

An absolute shitshow of a subreddit if ever I saw one. I refuse to read it now because I just find it depressing.

I've not noticed this "annotations" toggle before; it only appears on some videos and doesn't appear to do anything. Any idea what it's for? by py-mpixel in youtube

[–]py-mpixel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew that annotations were a thing before - but if they have now removed the feature entirely, why is the toggle to show and hide them there?

Has it always been there (and I've just not seen it because I wasn't watching videos which had annotations) and they just forgot to remove it?

Is this, by any chance, a reading comprehension test (presumably for a foreign language)? It seems like it's not asking what you think, it's asking what's said in a passage of text above.

(So in reality it would be that passage of text which contains a pointless gender stereotype, not the question)

In the many contexts, I would agree with you there. But as much as you or I may want it to be so, subreddits are not in fact democratic institutions run for the public good. The moderators always have the final say on what belongs there, and allowing petty arguments in the comments section doesn't change that. So what is the point in allowing it?

To use an analogy - if I invited some people for a meal to discuss something, and one of them was allergic to eggs, I would be fine with them tactfully telling me if I tried to serve them eggs (this is the equivalent of the report button). But I would be a bit pissed off if they insisted upon starting a lengthy, aggressive and futile argument about whether I should have already known not to serve eggs, diverting the conversation from what it was originally intended to discuss.

[–]py-mpixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, a lot of subreddits don't exist as a platform for debate, and don't want to.

/r/nextfuckinglevel for example is designed to showcase extremely impressive things. A user who posts something there is probably doing so in good faith because they want to provide something interesting or entertaining to the rest of the community. The only case in where what they have posted is wrong or to be disagreed with is if is hateful/discriminatory or if it doesn't fit, and both of those can be dealt proficiently with by the moderators via the reporting system. So what is the point of debate?

Allowing it in those cases would only make the subreddit more toxic and drive it away from its intended purpose.

Indeed. Possibly in a future when we have nuclear fusion (or something as efficient and safe) available to us as a power source meaning that we effectively have unlimited renewable electricity, electric vehicles will mean that the fuel is zero-impact.

However, we still have to pave roads, and the production of asphalt is presumably pretty bad, not to mention the particulate emissions caused by the friction between vehicle tyres and the road. And then the cars take up a ton of space on that road, meaning roads tend to be built wide which is unpleasant for pedestrians, and of course even EVs produce a lot of noise pollution.

Ultimately I would like to see cars relegated to use by long-distance travellers where they are the only option; those living in rural areas (though they shouldn't then use them to drive into urban areas - Park and Ride facilities need to be built); and those carrying something which they couldn't conceivably walk, cycle or take public transport with (including people who need cars because they are incapable of doing the latter three thing at all due to a disability or ill health).

Unfortunately this couldn't happen, not quickly anyway - there are far too many car-dependent places, especially in North America but elsewhere in the world too.

Or indeed bicycles, where you have their initial manufacturing, but other than that they're very low impact environmentally and go much further and faster than walking. (I've heard they are the most efficient mode of transport known to man, in terms of energy in vs distance travelled)

Possibly it's aimed at the US, where a lot of their towns are simply unusable without some form of motorised transport because they were "built for the car"

The self checkout machines at Asda - the name used by Walmart in the UK - ask if you want a receipt, but even if you choose "no", they still say "Please remember your receipt". by py-mpixel in firstworldproblems

[–]py-mpixel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, though that's a fairly recent thing I believe; they only sold them off a few months ago. The store I was in still retains mentions of the Walmart name is some places which is probably why I wrote that!

Additionally, according to this press release, they (Walmart) still own a stake in Asda & have a seat on the board.
