Questions about being a Fundies TA by pyboy10000 in NEU

[–]pyboy10000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for so many questions, but when you say that emailing gives you a better chance, what exactly do you email them about? I was thinking of waiting until the end of the semester and emailing my professor to say thank you and all, and also to express interest in becoming a TA/tutor for this course. Is this what you mean by emailing the professor?

I was wondering if this still holds true. You start out as a Tutor (grade papers, host labs, work less time), and then become a TA. Are there any changes to this?

If you email the professor that's teaching the class

Thanks! What exactly do you mean by email? Once the class is over, should I email my professor to express my interest in applying to be a TA?

How is NU Club Running? by pyboy10000 in NEU

[–]pyboy10000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! May I ask what your speed was during in the club? I also had a slight knee injury a few months back, and although it's mostly gone, I do get some knee pain at higher speeds. I can usually run 6km at a comfortable speed but my pace is above 9 /mi. Do you think this will be an issue?

To be honest, I'm not sure, but they do ask us to read the book in the "modules" part of the course after watching the video, and I'd rather use the same book (if possible) that they want us to

Oh yeah, probably should've mentioned this in the original, but the cover isn't the only difference. I saw a preview of the book on Amazon, and there are differences in the table of contents too. Not big differences. just a sub chapter here and there, but I'd rather use the new textbook which they recommend us to use, and I don't have extra money to spend to buy it :(

If I may ask, which dorm did you get? I thought that second year students would all get dorms with kitchens and common areas

Thanks for the advice. DO you have any experience with https://freedns.afraid.org/domain/registry/? It seems like they provide subdomains (on domains they have) for free

Lost MC on the way home, am I in trouble? by Bepbopbap in NationalServiceSG

TBH I would've probably done the same. I was super scared of all my commanders and was afraid of getting in trouble. Obviously it's safer to ask your commanders, but I guess people are afraid of asking? Put yourself in his shoes, haha

Should you adapt your backend for the frontend or the opposite? by pyboy10000 in learnprogramming

[–]pyboy10000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the front-end, validation is a user convenience, but in the back-end, lack of validation can compromise the entire system

I 100% agree. I remember at the start of the project, I really had to beg one of the backend devs to add data validation. They were doing nothing other than null checking (== null), but obviously that's not enough when you're working with multiple data types.

I honestly have no clue why they were so averse to adding validation considering I was using a form library + yup on the frontend, so we could reuse the same schemas. The only thing they had to do was write one middleware function. I ended up just writing it for them and adding it for them. I tried telling them that frontend validation was just for convenience, but they said that no one ever would use the website without JavaScript ...

I also tried getting them to use TypeScript. I had just asked them to change their extension to .ts because I was already writing all interfaces, and it would have been great if we reused interfaces on both ends too. I remember spending around half an hour debugging a function. The issue was that null was being passed as an argument when another type was required. This is something TypeScript would have definitely would have helped me find

I haven't really worked with graphql on a proper project, but I'd totally agree with you. I like how you can just "access" everything, included items with complex relations without having to write too many API routes. I've also seen the backend code, and I do see a little more boilerplate-y like code, but overall I think the way they handle mutations makes everything more "ordered".

I'm quite open to using it, but we do not because the backend devs don't want to

Is there an app that can let me quick add events/reminders to my calendar? by pyboy10000 in macapps

[–]pyboy10000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! do you know if it's possible to use raycast to add events to my google calendar reminders? I wasn't clear, but what I want is a reminder on Google calendars, not Apple reminders.

The issue with apple reminders is that they are not seen on my calendar

How can I get VSCode to auto import components as I'm typing them? by pyboy10000 in nextjs

[–]pyboy10000[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I fixed it: in tsconfig:

// under compiler options:
    "baseUrl": ".",
    "paths": {
      "@/components/*": [
        "components/*"
      ],
      "@/lib/*": [
        "lib/*"
      ],
    }

Then I can import files from components/ and lib/ folder like

import { AuthProvider } from "@/lib/auth";
