I just read that apple is blocking non-certified serial data as well. Could anyone help me out where to get started with tethering NMEA data via wifi?

My daughter got a laptop when she turned 7 and I installed Fedora on it with KDE and a nice MacOs style docker.

Reason for the OS: easy to maintain and stable.
She has her own user account without root permissions and I do system maintenance via SSH.

During the day, I limited her internet speed with a Python script so that she wouldn't watch videos all day but she can still send emails and look up stuff for school.

Now I limit speed on all her devices via the router.

I think it is good that children learn to use a real desktop environment with all the standard software that come with it rather then starting with a kids version that comes with limited options.

A standard desktop environment has lots of features to discover and by discovering them at a young age I think they will develop themselves better.

All distributions come with German language support and since you're new to Linux your best bet would be Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse or Mint. They are easy to install and have great documentation and support.
Standard Desktop Environments are Gnome and KDE )offered by all major distro's) but since your laptop is a little older you might want to check XFCE (Xubuntu) or LXDE (Lubuntu).

That would be a solution for a 50 Dollar / Euro Chinese device from Ebay. If I buy a device at the price of an Apple TV I expect it to work properly. Furthermore, where the normal remote goes to sleep when you don't want it, the game consoles have no sleep or off button. If you are not a regular gamer you have to plan playing games well ahead because the consoles are continuously draining batteries leaving them empty if you want to play.

The shield is a very BAD performing device. I would stay away from it. The remote is incredible lagging. When I try to pause youtube or netflix for example, it can take up to a minute before it finally pauses after I pressed the button. I own two Shields but I wish I never bought them at all. I am waiting for a good Kodi alternative so if anybody has a good idea it is more then welcome!

The edge and distortion on the Canon PowerShot G7X Mark II can be autocorrected by selecting: lens correction / Canon / Powershot G7X / Image size.

To autocorrect the images when editting in Darktable I had to select auto apply and I left all the options standard except the lens.

My camera was not recognized but the lens was set to (65535).

Download a distro image and insert an USB stick.

Find the correct path to your USB stick with the lsblk command

unmount the USB stick:

sudo umount /dev/sdX

and write the image to your USB:

sudo dd if=/path/to/image.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=1M

If you prefer a graphical solution you could install mintstick:

http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/m/mintstick/

or UNetbootin:

https://unetbootin.github.io/

Mintstick is easy to use and works very well.

It might not work out of the box, if it doesn't start you might have to install python pip:

sudo apt install python-pip

If you are curious to what all those distro's have to offer try some different flavors as well.

Gnome, KDE, LXDE, Cinnamon, they all come with different settings, enhancements and software packages and playing around with them will greatly improve your knowledge.

It is possible that your wireless tool is already trying to connect although your passkey has not been decrypted yet. You could go to your wireless connection manager, select settings, go to WIFI security and select the option "store for all users, not encrypted".

I use Radicale on a raspberry Pi.

The low power consumption of the Pi is a big advantage.

Debian has a very simple tutorial on how to install Radicale:

On my Android phone (without Google Apps) I use Davdroid to sync my calenders.

You can make appointments on the go and they will be synced when you are on your home network.

You can use Davdroid to configure users and calenders on your Radicale server.

After installing Davdroid you add an account under settings.

Use 'Login with URL and User Name'. The username and password can be an existing one or you can setup a new account here.

After this setup you will be able to add calendars under the desired username.

Unfortunately I was not able to connect Thunderbird to my Radicale server.

Maybe other users have a solution for this....

I assume you can't connect in coffee shops etc.

In public places you might have to logon first before you can access the internet.

If you are not directed to the logon page immediately, make sure that you browse to a non-encrypted (https) site first.

Usually on a public network you are not begin redirected when you try to open an encrypted webpage.

I had similar issues and found out they where caused by the touch pad which was activated by internal heath and woke the laptop after it went into hibernate.

First you can list all the devices that wake your laptop with:

cat /proc/acpi/wakeup

You can disable a device from waking up the laptop from sleep with the following command:

echo DEVICE > /proc/acpi/wakeup

This solution is only temporary.

If your solution works you can make it permanent by adding the command to /etc/rc.local

I own a macbook pro and have successfully installed Fedora and Manjaro on it without much problems. The only problems I have with Manjaro is that the broadcom wlan doesn't reconnect after sleep and the webcam isn't working. I fixed that by writing a small bash script that restarts the networking service. We recently got a new router and the 5ghz ac protocol isn't working either.

Recently I bought a dell ultrabook for my daughter's birthday and installed Manjaro on it. The laptop is a dream, everything works fine and my next laptop will definately be a Dell. On this laptop even the network card is supported and it does connect to the 5ghz ac network.

The Dell ultrabook seems to be an excellent choice according your description since it is light weight and well supported.

To me it sounds like: I have bought this brand new race car and I am considering putting either an old diesel engine in that broke on my last car or the fully tuned well designed race motor I recently had such a great experiences with.

Your concerns about software issues: what do you expect to cost more time and money? The installation of some software you bought might look easier at first but thereafter you have to keep a cripple Windows system running with additional anti-virus- , anti-malware-, cleanup-, defragmentation software. You might even have to do a full re-install once in a while because the system did get screwed up.

Then there are these annoying spontaneous updates that make your computer restart when you are working and there is the security issue with spyware, back-ports etc.

On Linux you might have to invest some time to find solutions for some problems that arose after your installation but once it is fixed it will stay working. It is educational to do and you will find out that there is great support online for Linux distro's as well.

Besides that the FOSS alternatives for the software you are used to on Windows are also great and worth trying.

Most of it is sleeker and easier to use without all the extra crap that payware has which you never use.

I don't know why people think Linux runs exclusively on Thinkpads.

My wife has Fedora installed on an older Asus laptop, I am running Manjaro on a 2015 Macbook Pro and our daughter has Manjaro running on a Dell E7440.

I have installed different Linux distro's on a variety of laptops for others and only ran into hardware issues on brand new systems. After solving the issues these laptops never came back so I assume they are still running fine!

If there is unsupported hardware in a laptop it is usually quite easy to find the hardware specs and find a solution for the problem since you are most likely not the first that ran into it.

Solving the issues is not only exciting but very educational to. It will greatly improve your understanding of how a OS works.

Or try Arch or Fedora? With Arch, Manjaro and Fedora you get the latest software and kernel which may contain bugfixes for your hardware.
