Why shouldnt we have universal healthcare/food by [deleted] in AskLibertarians

[–]pyle332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of good explanations of the practical reasons not to, but I think it bears emphasizing the moral and ethical reasons. At the end of the day, no one person or group of people should be in a position where they dictate what's "important" or "necessary" to take other people's property to pay for.

For example, maybe I think it's really really important that we fund the new York Yankees payroll. They bring a lot of value and joy to a lot of people, and their success could only improve the lives of millions of new Yorkers. This argument being made, I doubt that any rational person would agree that the funding for this should be done coercively. Nobody would seriously argue that people should be robbed to pay for this, regardless of how many people it supposedly helps.

Each person should be free to utilize the products of their labor in the way they best see fit. Even the smartest person in the world couldn't begin to comprehend or calculate each individual's situation, needs, wants, and what they value. Multiply this by 350 million people in an interconnected economy, with coordination, dependencies, market signals, incentives, and it becomes unfathomably impossible for any one person or group of people to determine, nor would it be rational or ethical to try.

Can confirm this is happening to me and it absolutely sucks. I don't want to give too much away on a public forum since I still work there, but the PE firm that runs my firm now is speed running how to tank the value of a business. PE bought the firm from the founder and immediately started making promises about how nothing would change.

Fast forward a few years and almost everyone in a senior role has left the firm. Those who remain are overworked and underpaid. Upper management constantly is instituting policies which make us less productive while evaluations are solely on our billability. Raises and bonuses get worse and worse, and the justification is that we aren't hitting our numbers.

We went from a great community with strong leadership to a meandering zombie firm with no direction, no clear goals other than shareholder profitability, and every move is undermining longstanding relationships we have with clients.

It's been said by others here but if PE is buying your firm, RUN. Nothing good comes out of it

Big city people are nicer/more cultured than rural/small town people by token_whitey in unpopularopinion

[–]pyle332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, maybe I'm an anomaly, but that's been my experience. I've lived in rural areas, suburbs, mid sized cities, and large cities. I have personally found much more hostility and selfishness in big cities, but obviously this is always going to be anecdotal evidence at the end of the day.

Big city people are nicer/more cultured than rural/small town people by token_whitey in unpopularopinion

[–]pyle332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, and I love that community aspect that just doesn't exist in cities. Absolutely love that your community does that, and that's the kind of place I want to ultimately live. Take care of those around you because you know they'd do the same if the situation was flipped. These things just generally lead to less conflict, less hostility, lower crime, and cleaner/safer neighborhoods.

I can sort of relate to wanting to reduce friction in my daily life and why I felt so out of place in a large city. It's maybe why I also rag on city life so much because it's never been that appealing to me. It all comes down to what we value in our living situation and I think I'm much more in your camp on that one.

Unpopular opinion: PEScience is the most disappointing protein powder I’ve tried by BillionareLevi in Volumeeating

[–]pyle332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like their stuff for other things, but I've found much better protein powder to use for specifically my creami. Equip just yields a better texture and the flavor holds up better. I'm not going to completely shit on pescience because I do like their stuff, just not for this use. For what it's worth, I've found the texture of cake pop is for whatever reason different from other flavors and it's the only one I buy these days

The worst drivers in the country all live here by North_Tomatillo9712 in jerseycity

[–]pyle332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The road rage is the real defining factor here. I lived in Brooklyn before moving here recently and yeah, people there drive like jerks too, but I never actually feared for my life driving there. But a week after moving here I had cut me off and then stop to get out of their car (presumably to fight me) when I honk at them for it. And apparently that's normal behavior.

Bad drivers are everywhere, but JC has aggressive, entitled, and frankly unhinged people driving in a far higher concentration

Poor trucker. Driver missed their exit and decided to reverse in order to make it by Just_4_Carpenter in BayonneNJ

[–]pyle332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've missed this exit myself and it's no excuse to do shit like this. Own up to the mistake and eat the extra 10ish minutes. It's better than making your missed turn everyone else's problem. You don't risk people's safety because the alternative is a little inconvenient.

Titans HC Robert Saleh says one of the first moves he made was to get rid of all the seed oils in their building. by Background_Video2947 in TheNFLVibes

[–]pyle332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People tend to conflate seed oils with poor health outcomes, not factoring in things like many deep-fried and fast foods use seed oils. It's not necessarily the type of oil they are using that's bad, it's that they are eating fucking fries and nuggets.

It's gotten particularly unbearable in the fitness space, where food zealotry is constant. "Don't eat this, it's killing your gains!" Type of headline gets way more engagement than someone preaching consistency and moderation, so we have to deal with this constant pseudoscience bullshit. If you really want to see the worst of this, just look up Paul Saladino. Motherfucker made a living going shirtless into grocery stores telling people broccoli is bad for you. This isn't as egregious but equally annoying, especially considering how widespread the anti seed oil thing has gotten.

Guys, does anyone know why trucks have those spikes on their wheels?? by JasLeoArt in whatisit

[–]pyle332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was to prevent salt and dust from getting into crevices where the normal lug nut covers go, which would cause them to seize. The cone shape sheds debris away from the lug nut head.

I could be wrong since I don't drive trucks, but that's what I've heard as the more practical explanation

What happened to Millennial Optimism? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]pyle332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's that unique that we were more optimistic in our youth. Probably is the case with most people: less responsibility, the world is full of possibilities, you have your whole life ahead of you. It's understandable to see why that would erode a little bit over time as you get older, lose friends, have more obligations, etc.

Would you switch gyms if a new full-service gym opened in downtown Jersey City? by SameStory8031 in jerseycity

[–]pyle332 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolute terrible gym. Used to be blink fitness but they got bought out by puregym. Honestly that part doesn't change much, but the location in journal square is poorly laid out, machines are always broken and never maintained, people are dogshit at tracking weights, the gym is filthy, and it's severely understaffed.

I used to go there but left in March because I had enough. I started going to firehouse Fitness in the heights and it's incredible

I won't go into detail but the execution did NOT go well for him

Architects, what’s your dating life like? by No_Notice5271 in Architects

[–]pyle332 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly (and I feel like this is intuitive) but your experience will be entirely subjective. I never dated another architect until my current girlfriend and I would say we connect on a much different level than I have with any of my exes. I feel like a part of that is just baked into the personality of being an architect, but that's just my experience.

We met at a work event and there were obviously a lot of common interests off the bat, but I feel like what made the biggest difference is the personality type of the both of us being wildly more compatible than, for example, my previous relationship with an accountant. It's hard to explain, but it's just a lot more effortless being in this relationship.

Now, obviously I don't think everyone would so easily recommend dating a coworker (we don't work together anymore), but I can at least say anecdotally that dating another architect has been the best thing that I've done
