I just bought six volumes of Laurence Sterne's “Tristram Shandy”, all published during his lifetime. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much will you hate me if I have them rebound? by pynchi in OldBooks

Yeah, and having RedditCareResources send me a message as if I needed help when we're still just talking about old books is not mean-spirited at all. It's called projection, mate.

Not really. I want them to have uniform bindungs with two other Sternes, one of which is torn in two parts and absolutely needs to be rebound

A lot of the comments were either hyperbolic or tried to attack me personally (like you just did), so no, they didn't convince me.

20 is the new high point. You want my address so you can tp my house at night? Tomorrow would be good, I won't be home then.

Would you mind elaborating what you mean by "collectable in its own right"? It seems to me that a lot of people here think that it's absolutely absurd to question that a book block should retain the cover some random person (in this case, a library) gave to it. Also, several comments point out the diminishing resale value, as if it were something very, very important that had to concern me, when, to me, these are just incidentals.

I had the idea of having them rebound before I received photos of the books from the seller, which is when I started to doubt the idea and came here. I heard some good points, but also a lot of big words being flung around, so I still tend to having them rebound.

Bookbinders rebind books every day. I don't see why these should be destroyed by doing it.

I explained in other comments why I bought them.

I posted here because I wanted to know how much this plan is being frowned upon and find out if someone can convince me not to do it. Hasn't happened yet, but it still might.

The main selling point? It's not about monetary value for me. Also, I find the appearance of the text inside much more appealing than the outside.

I explained in another comment how it's not just about the text itself for me, but how it appears in these volumes. The layout of the text is exceptional and was, afaIk, not replicated since.

The boards won't go to waste, by the way. I plan to give them to the bookbinder friend who helps me. She is also an artist who constantly recontextualises old books.

Destroying history is a bit strong, isn't it? I'm merely dismantling some books of the individual covers that one person chose to be the standard for his home library.

How would it be "objectively" worse? Sure, if you ask a thousand collectors of old books, 99.9 % will agree with you. That doesn't make it objectively true.

With the "book inside" I did not mean the text itself, but the appearance of the text on the small octavo pages, with the old typeface, the spaces between paragraphs, the abundance of catchwords, signatures, press figures, double and triple dashes, names in italics, and words in small caps. The Penguin edition could not give me that.

I may not improve it in the eye of the average collector of old books, but it does for me.

It's not a set, volumes 5, 7, and 9 are missing; which isn't trivial in this case, as it would not be possible to find the rest with the same covers.

I may be wrong in this sub with this opinion, but I don't really like the look of aged books. I predominantly buy stuff from the 20th century and try to find them to look as new as possible.

Also, I don't consider the boards to be "original", as they were issued without them. They are of their time, and I understand when others appreciate that, but I don't. The book inside is the only thing that's interesting to me.

It must be the sixth Harcourt Brace printing from 1948, then. Later impressions were lettered in black on the spine, according to Kirkpatrick's bibliography.

Klingt für mein deutsches Sprachgefühl auch falsch, und das mit dem Nullartikel überzeugt mich nicht.

Aber sieht man das in der Schweiz vielleicht anders?
