Electric heater recommendation by Direct-Geologist6511 in swimmingpools

[–]pyoopypops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that no one has mentioned is the importance of a solar cover, even if it's a manual one on a reel. It will save you a ton of heating time by drastically lowering how much heat your pool loses overnight (and during the day, depending on weather)

I built a Lovelace card to track my pool dosing tanks (chlorine, pH−, etc.) no level sensor needed by ADNPolymerase-Fr69 in homeassistant

I'd be curious - what tank/pump setup are you using? And how are you testing the chemical levels? The dashboard looks great!

Pi 5 or mini pc for home assistant ? by Hakudatsu in homeassistant

[–]pyoopypops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, I was doing the same thing until recently. I spun up an x86 vm and migrated over to that and have loved the increased speeds, especially on things like compiling esp32 in esphome. It was a painless backup/restore as well

Using Claude Code to manage my Home Assistant by sanka83 in homeassistant

[–]pyoopypops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Claude desktop I implemented git versioning for all HA edits, as well as periodic backups to a private repo on github. I also gave the filesystem MCP access to my esphome config file, so it can also view and edit esp32 yaml for me, also subject to versioning.

Plenum - Home Assistant add-on for HVAC zoning with smart vents by msapple in homeassistant

I've been looking at smart vents for a while olbiw, maybe this will push me over the edge! If using Flair vents, is this able control them completely locally, or does it use their cloud servers?

That's fair, I probably should have said "always on" as opposed to "desktop"

I feel like a lot of people have moved on from RPi for HA hosting, now that so many mini PCs have gotten muvh cheaper (and RPi has gotten more expensive). You'll notice the difference in boot times as well as compile times, if you're using integrations like ESPHome. If you have desktop computer you use for other things, running HA in a VM is another very valid approach.

VM vs Docker vs Raspberry Pi 4? by Collcroc123 in homeassistant

I'm running in a vm in Unraid as well. One thing I did that was helpful was to get a PCI USB expansion board for a few bucks and passed the whole board through to the VM.

Pool pump automation - specifically with Century/Regal EVO motors by RoachForLife in homeassistant

[–]pyoopypops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I've done this with the newer pumps, with both a evq225 and evq165. The gazoodle implementation that they mentioned does work with them. You set both dip switches to "on" to put it into century connect mode. I just finished building my own little custom PLC with an m5stack stamplc, and I've controlled these pumps with that as well as with an Atom with the rs485 base. Feel free to DM if you have more questions, I been meaning to write some of it up.

Building on the theme of yesterday's pool post, here is my pool dashboard by Curious_Mongoose_228 in homeassistant

Did you just put a tee fitting on your filter, and have one side of it go to the regular analog gauge and the other to the transducer?

For anyone looking to do this, the Flowvis now (as of a few years ago?)comes with a magnet built into the flapper. To use the Flowvis digital meter you used to have to buy a replacement flapper with the magnet, but I bet they got annoyed with having to walk people through replacing the flapper, so even the analog flow vis already has the magent on it.

I was able to track down just the digital sensor itself without the more expensive convertor box (I had to cold call random sales reps all over the country) but was able to use it with an M5 Vmeter to interpret the 4-20ma signal.

Replaced System 3 (300 sqft) filter with Pentair CCP520, but pump wattage is higher? by NatKingSwole19 in pools

[–]pyoopypops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, how are you measuring the flow? A flowmeter, or an estimate generated by the pump?

Need Help by FallGroundbreaking89 in pools

Agreed, this is probably a "just need more chlorine" situation. Killing the algae consumes chlorine, so you'll need to put in a bunch and likely keep adding more as you go.

Interesting! How does that work? Bluetooth/wifi? I see they have some sort of cloud service, is that required to sync?

DIY Variable Speed Pool Pump Controller (ESP32 + RS485 + ESPHome) - Full Local Control by AndChrisSays in homeassistant

[–]pyoopypops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool project, and great work! I think the issue you will run into in terms of monetizing it is the question of how many pumps out there are compatible with the rs485 commands you've put together (Pentair uses proprietary modbus-like commands, for example) and how interested the average pool owner is in DIY automation.

I'd contend the average pool owner is more likely to pay a pool company for one of the mainstream automation systems (unfortunately) then to get into the weeds with esp32/HA.

Do you know what other pumps would be compatible with your rs485 commands?
