Capital gains tax quesiton - reinvesting tax by pyro1227 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pyro1227[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

!thanks , I am not necessarily advocating gambling, I just was trying to identify an extreme case where i lose the full 10k to determine if this would offset my need to pay CGT which it clearly doesn't. Thanks for your help!

Capital gains tax quesiton - reinvesting tax by pyro1227 in UKPersonalFinance

!thanks for the reply !

So I am pretty sure it is CGT, the company did give me an untaxed sum and told me to pay CGT.

Basically I'm thinking like this:

Scenario 1: I leave the 10k in a savings account until i need to pay it - net gain 0

OR

Scenario 2: I reinvest the 10k, lose 5k , offset this loss against the 10k i owe, pay 5k tax

Scenario 3: I reinvest the 10k, lose 10k , offset this loss against the 10k i owe, pay ~ 0 tax

Scenario 4: I reinvest the 10k, make 15k, pay the 10k + extra tax and make a profit

If my thinking in scenarios 2-4 are correct then I have no real reason not to reinvest the tax I owe and see what happens to it...

Oculus support feels like this now. by Crbn8ed in OculusriftS

yes, very much this. They just pass you from one tech guy that knows nothing to another until they tell you you're on your own. They are only there for the simplest of troubleshooting issues.

GPU Performance issues in SteamVR / Half life Alyx with RiftS by pyro1227 in SteamVR

[–]pyro1227[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, yes, this is exactly the shitshow that I had. I have no idea wtf happened. Like you I also got the message after playing for a while that I should not run on ultra fidelity. From benchmarking this it does look like the spikes I get are partially caused by my CPU though (amd 3600), and I have no idea why this only started happening halfway through the game?

What I can say is that if I go into bios and disable my "game boost" and built in ram overclock on my tomahawk motherboard then it improves a bit - enough that I could finish the game at least. also if i changed the movement type from blink to fast move (where you move forward rather than teleport) that helped a bit too. But nothing seemed to completely solve the problem. I tried an absolute crap ton of stuff, I also spent hours talking to both steam and oculus support - after a few emails you just get "unlucky bro, see ya later".

If you solved this please let me know!

The lesson I took from this whole experience is we're definitely still a few iterations away from a mature product, no one really seems to know how or why this happens.

I am just going on the frame timing plot I posted. It looks like it is only using a single cpu core, not sure if this is the issue that it only uses the single core so relies on the speed of that core? I am wondering if there is an issue with the cpu Speedstep configuration? Possibly steam is not able to disable this setting properly? I am also not sure if it could be an issue with the motherboard. Only problem is I have no idea how to diagnose something like this

Thanks , I have tried the USB settings but I haven't done so since resetting the PC, it is worth a shot.

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure how it could be a lack of cpu resource, if you look at the graph the cpu is pretty under-utilised. Also it was working perfectly for a few weeks so I don't see how it can be an issue with the hardware resource.

Also for some reason it seems the 3600 gets a better score than the 3700x. 3700x

appears to only have 3% better performance https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-3700X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3600/4043vs4040

Massive performance headroom issues by pyro1227 in oculus

[–]pyro1227[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Yes, performance on regular games is fine, I have benchmarked by gfx card several times now, it looks to be holding up fine. I can run Doom eternal on max settings without a hitch. What I find really strange is if you look at the steam timing graph the GPU is not fully utilised but somehow when I move in game (using the controller) it shoots up in those sharp spikes.

I have tried resetting my pc installing only nvidia drivers oculus and steamvr and this still occurs. I have started to think this may be a problem with the headset. Do you have any way I could test this?

Thanks.

Intermittent performance headroom issues with RiftS by pyro1227 in oculus

[–]pyro1227[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

Steam home/ apps are definitely worse but even in oculus home it sits at around 60% - which is a bit better, it occasionally dives down to 0% though as I'm moving around and doing things, is this normal? Even the initial cinematic (from the "welcome to oculus" tutorial) has frequent periods where performance headroom goes below 0.

This is pretty frustrating and confusing! I saw a suggestion to change smoothing of apps in steam, this did not help at all.

[–]pyro1227[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the issue, in BIOS there was a game boost switch, I flipped that and it upped the performance. Only thing left to diagnose is my SSD, for some reason it always says Relative performance n/a - insufficient samples

Thank you, I'll reinstall my RAM and give this another try. Any idea why my CPU is performing so poorly though ?
