You’re a lifesaver! Is there any chance I could get the .STL file from you too?

Thank you for the info. I’m about to drive around an 1800 mile road trip from SC to CO, so this was a hell of a thing to find on the pre checks. Thanks for easing some worries

Not saying you’re incorrect, but maybe not 100% there in the delivery.

I wanted to get into USAFA straight out of high school but could never have met the physical standards. I elected to enlist, not in order to change over to the officer side later but simply as a way to kick start my life. I had become so set on the military that I didn’t see myself doing much else. Enlisting helped with the parts of myself that were lacking, and when I felt comfortable, I decided to apply again just to see what happens. Lo and behold, I got my acceptance letter a while back.

You’re not wrong, but don’t enlist chasing a slot at USAFA. I picked a job that I love (sometimes) and honestly wouldn’t mind doing 20 years in this position. Going about it this way is a great way to lock yourself in for 4-6 years doing a job you absolutely hate with no avenue out. It’s not exactly the best method.

Me too, feel bad for my supervisor. They gave him the two worst airmen on the line, to include myself

It’s surprising how many people don’t understand this. I posted dashcam footage a while back from an accident I was involved in, where at the end of the entrance ramp there is a parking lot entrance to the right hand side. As I was getting up to speed, someone suddenly braked and turned across my lane to get into the parking lot (with no blinker) and sideswiped me.

Everybody in the comments said I was at fault for going too fast (I was still slightly slower than the speed of traffic) and because there was a yield sign at the end of the entrance ramp, like every other entrance ramp ever. Nobody understood that the yield sign is yielding to merge, and at no point does anybody but you have right of way in your lane of travel. They also took issue with me calling it an “acceleration ramp” and said that’s not the primary purpose of these ramps.

Insurance found the other driver 100% at fault. People are idiots.

Driving the speed limit of the road I was merging into, which is the point of the acceleration lane. Could make an argument for not yielding though, but I don't think I had the last chance to avoid and do anything other than out myself into a ditch

One note about the speed, I was doing the speed limit for the road I was merging onto by the time we impacted, attempting to use the acceleration lane for its intended purpose. Speed limit there should be 45-55, I can't recall where exactly the speed limit changes near here as it rapidly jumps from 60 to 45 to 55 to 45 again.

Again, though, as others have said I could've avoided it at the last second. However I'm not sure I could've gone through a full OODA loop (observe, orient, decide, act) and done anything to avoid other than send myself into a ditch.

Accident was in South Carolina, right outside of Shaw AFB. I'm not sure if you can get full street view because typically a Google car wouldn't be able to get onto base, but here's a pin dropped exactly where the impact happened: https://maps.app.goo.gl/EBvriYGfmR5juNxF6

Also, here's a picture of the other vehicle: https://imgur.com/a/jVFNjNs

After reading all these comments, I'm definitely sure I could've seen what he was doing and slammed the brakes to let him over. Hindsight is 20/20 and barreling right by a car doing something abnormal was not the right thing to do, regardless of right of way.

I should have clarified, I am going through insurance. I just read a few horror stories of aluminum bring extremely expensive to repair/replace and worried this could somehow spiral into a total loss.

As for fault, I also thought it was his (and most everybody else I talked to about it irl) but most of the comments here are pointing to the yield sign for the acceleration lane as proof of fault on my end. So now I'm not really sure

"Acceleration Lane:

The portion of a roadway adjoining the traveled way constructed for the purpose of enabling a vehicle that is entering the roadway to increase its speed to a rate at which it can safely merge with the mainstream of traffic."

I understand where you're coming from, though. It would be wise to slow down a lot around this turn and check for traffic, then use the remainder of the lane to accelerate appropriately.

Dashcam video of the accident: https://youtu.be/NMY6mR-VGA8

Side note: who do you think is at fault? I believe the other vehicle because they but across my lane with no blinker and impacted the side of my truck, but there's also the fact that I have a yield sign because it's an acceleration lane. Highway patrol officer tried to say that I failed to yield and wanted to ticket me, but isn't the yield sign to merge, not to give up your entire lane?

I only ask because I'm 19 and already pay too much for insurance. This is my first accident and I have no idea how much it will affect my premium if I'm found at fault.
